Backer Beta Incoming!

With swirling heads, sweaty palms, and soaring hearts, we are pleased to announce that the BATTLETECH Kickstarter Backer Beta is ready, and keys will start arriving later today!

Distributing 25,000 Steam keys into BackerKit accounts will take hours, so please be patient! WHEN YOUR BETA KEY LANDS IN YOUR ACCOUNT, YOU WILL GET A NOTIFICATION EMAIL DIRECTLY FROM BACKERKIT.

As noted in our last update (which included a Beta FAQ), today’s release contains single-player Skirmish mode ONLY. We will automatically update the Beta with PvP multiplayer as soon as it's ready and let you know with another Kickstarter update.

So How Do I Get Started?!

Instructions for getting your Steam Key from your BackerKit account, downloading the game, and how to play the game are located in your Backer Beta PDF Manual (which you can start studying up on while you’re waiting for your notification email from BackerKit to arrive!) Since this isn’t the finished game, our Backer Beta does not include an in-game tutorial. You’ll likely have way more fun and be able to give us better feedback if you understand how things work, so it’s highly recommended that you review the PDF Manual before your first game.

BTW, you can also view the manual in-game at any time by clicking the “Help” button on the Main Menu.

What We Need From You

We hope you enjoy this first taste of our BATTLETECH game and we want to learn from your experiences playing it. So what do we need? MEASURABLE DATA! After EACH battle, you’ll get the opportunity to give us your feedback in a short 1-page survey on a variety of topics - controls, audio, AI, maps, tactics, and more - so be sure to take as many surveys as possible.

And plan to fill out the same survey more than once! We fully expect your answers to change over time (that’s an important part of the feedback process) so don’t skip a survey because you’ve seen the questions before. This is the best, most helpful way to positively impact the project and help us make the game better for everyone. (Yes, it’s even more helpful than reporting bugs.)

The other way to get us your feedback is to join the BATTLETECH Forum. The Backer Beta Discussion sub-forum is the place where you can expand on your experiences playing the game and share your constructive criticism with others. While the dev team won’t respond to feedback or engage in debates, we’ll definitely be reading and learning from your conversations.

Have fun! Melt armor! Kick myomer!

@Andre Backer Beta Keys only go to Backers at the Mechwarrior tier and above.

If you backed at the Mechwarrior tier and above, have you checked your Backerkit? Click on the "Get my digital rewards" button. That's where they Beta key (if you qualify) will be,

If you did back at the Mechwarrior tier and above, and still don't have your Beta key in Backerkit, then contact HBS via email: info@hbs-studios.com and they'll get you sorted. ^_^

This smells a little bit like a fake... - I support this Game with my money at kickstarter not on a different page lije backerKit - i i DO not want to register and search and wait for the key :(

How do I download the beta? I don't see any links or anything in Backerkit or here, and I haven't received any emails telling me how to go about doing that.

    7. Harebrained Schemes LLC 4-time creator on June 15

@Martin - We believe that Jason is correct - those sound like Kickstarter emails rather than BackerKit, although we've reached out to ask them directly if they're sending anything like it. You can also reach out to BackerKit directly at support@backerkit.com.

With either site, you should have the ability to opt out of those mails. Sorry for any inconvenience.

    8. Jason Frey on June 15

@Martin: That's odd. I've backed a number of projects that leveraged Backerkit and like others, haven't seen a single unexpected email from Backerkit itself. I've gotten plenty of messages from Kickstarter like the one you've described (staff favorites and the like), though.

In the larger sense, I'm not sure how feasible it is for creators to disclose all of the logistics of their project (like the use of Backerkit, specific shipping companies they will use for each delivery of physical goods, etc.) at the project's inception. I suppose that's something you can ask up front prior to backing, since it seems to be a dealbreaker for you.

    9. Bruce Bookout on June 14

@RC I'm in!! Many thanks for your help.

    10. Martin Seeger on June 13

@RC @Daniel I have dozens of "#1 Staff Favorite of the Week" from Backerkit alone....

    11. RC on June 11

Backerkit definitely doesn't spam emails. Individual project creators use it to send out their follow up surveys to be sure rewards information is accurate, and update emails - usually for post-project funding "late backers.".You can opt out of each project's emails on Backerkit. Having had multiple Kickstarters use Backerkit, it's saved me more problems than it's caused, and it saved project creators from having to develop and maintain a unique 3rd party digital rewards site.

Email alone is far too unreliable for such things when managing tens of thousands of accounts, without hundreds of thousands of dollars to throw at a back end infrastructure to track and manage customer servicing. Backerkit makes backer dollars go father while allows devs to focus more on their projects.

Martin Seeger I have a backerkit account that has been used for 4 different, unrelated kickstarter projects and I haven't ever seen an email from them.
If you are getting add emails or whatnot, jump on there and see if you can change your settings.

    13. Martin Seeger on June 10

Remark from my side: I do not approve the usage of Backerkit or any other fulfillment service. The amount of accounts to take care of is exploding. I do not want another one, I do not need another one.

It is not so complicated to send X steam keys to X persons by email.

By using Backerkit you force me to accept their T&C which they use immediately to start spamming me with emails. The reserve the right to share my personal data with any supplier they decide to use.

If you plan to use such a service, please state it clearly during the campaign so that I can give the project a pass.

      @Bruce There's four ways I know of:

      1) HBS's Profile on Kickstarter itself has a "Contact Me" button https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/webeharebrained/battletech/creator_bio

      2) HBS's website http://harebrained-schemes.com/contact (though if your email isn't working, they may not be able to get a reply to you if they update it)

      3) HBs's Twitter account, using a DM (Direct Message) @WeBeHarebrained

      4) HBS's Facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/HarebrainedSchemes/

...they might have a preferred method other than one of these, but there you go ^_^

      @Harebrained Schemes LLC
Guys, I appreciate the help, but I've checked and rechecked my email - nothing. Apparently nothing is getting through to my earthlink account (one of many reasons I getting ready to drop it). Any suggestions on how to get my new email to you without posting it to the planet in this forum?

I know this may be a bit premature but has there been official word if external video card support may be implemented for OS X High Sierra? This is what I'm talking about:

      https://developer.apple.com/development-kit/external-graphics/

It would be a great boon for Apple users especially those using Macbook Pro laptops to know that this may be an option. Hoping to get my hands on a 15-inch Macbook Pro 2016 to do some testing soon. Thank you HBS for not forgetting Apple users!

Whoops. Ninja'd by HBS! As it should be ^_^

    18. RC on June 8

@Matthew Beta access was part of the MechWarrior tier and greater ($50 and up). If you want to get into the Beta, Backers at the lower tiers (Recruit and MechJock) can upgrade to the MechWarrior tier which includes Beta access by paying the difference between the tiers. You can email HBS to learn how: info@hbs-studios.com

    19. Harebrained Schemes LLC 4-time creator on June 8

@Matthew Butler - Beta access is not part of the $25 tier but you can still upgrad.

If you'd like to upgrade, please send an email to info@hbs-studios.com with your Paypal account if you have one and we'll send you an invoice to cover the difference between your current pledge and the upgrade. If you do not have a Paypal account, please just confirm the email address at which you would like to receive the invoice. A PayPal account is not required to pay the invoice and you'll have an option to pay the invoice without one. Cheers!

    20. Matthew Butler on June 7

Hi, I've gotten into my BackerKit account but I only have the Forum code and wallpaper for the $25 tier, should I have Beta access?

    21. Harebrained Schemes LLC 4-time creator on June 7

@Bruce Bookout - Looked up your account and it appears that you didn't answer your survey. I've resent the BackerKit account invitation with a link to your account so you can do that and then the Beta key should be available to you. Hope that helps!

    22. RC on June 7

@Bruce As you've mentioned that you sent an email and haven't received a response, it's likely HBS will see this during their business day tomorrow and reach out to you ^_^

    23. Bruce Bookout on June 6

@RC. Yeah I did that and there is no response to my email. I've check the spam and suspect mail. Still nothing.
I did back at the Mechwarrior level.

i try to do some BETA Videos, but most of them are broken... hm the recorded game is scrambled up and not useable...

      https://www.youtube.com/playlist…

    25. Emanuel K. on June 6

i only had one killed pilot, and about tow killed pilots at enemy mechs some games!

its pretty balanced i win 90% of my games

    26. RC on June 6

@Bruce ...Beta keys don't ome in email (though you should net an email from Backerkit when your key is available) ... all you have to do is check your Backerkit... here's how to do that...

      0) Beta is only available to backers at the MECHWARRIOR tier and greater as part of our Backer Rewards. So, the $50 and up tiers. If you backed the project at the MechJock or Recruit tier, you will have to upgrade to the MEHWARRIOR tier to get into the Beta (note it's Steam only) - You CAN upgrade by emailing HBS at info@hbs-studios.com and they'll give you info on how to upgrade if you want to.
      .
      1) go to http://battletech.backerkit.com
      2) put your backer email address in
      3) Click or tap "Get my Survey" (Yes, this is correct. It will send you a link with a unique token t get into your Backerkit account)
      4) Scroll down to "Get my Digital Downloads) and click or tap it
      5) You should now see your Form Code and Beta Key...etc.

Beta is Steam only for Mac and PC. Full launch will include GoG and Humble, and Linux.

    27. Bruce Bookout on June 5

Help! I checked my email and I never received a Beta Key. What do I need to do? Thanks.

    28. Dan Spezzano on June 5

Weird, I've played about a half dozen missions, won half of them and lost half. Never had pilots die every other turn.

    29. David Sherman on June 5

I haven't finished a single mission yet. I pilots keep getting murdered when the head gets hit, and destroyed, basically every other full round. When I finish one, (if I can,) I'll fill out the survey. I don't like trying to finish the game with 1 crippled mech, up against 3 barely scratched mechs.

    30. RC on June 4

@Brian ...the link had an @ in the middle of it... it's an email address... you use the email address in your email program. But it looks like HBS confirmed your Beta key waiting for you in your Backerkit account. Awesome! ^_^

    31. Mikko Saarinen on June 4

I was waiting for the beta key too, but like Gregory, I'm just a recruit.
I feel the previous posts didn't said it clear enough that recruits don't get the keys, so we were waiting for naught.
But no harm done. Now that I know the reason, I can happily wait for the final release, which will be... later this year?

    32. Harebrained Schemes LLC 4-time creator on June 3

@Gregory Bondy - Looks like you backed at the Recruit pledge level which doesn't include access to the beta.
Cheers!

    33. Gregory Bondy on June 3

I never got my key. All backer kit has for me for this project is some art and a forum code :(

    34. Harebrained Schemes LLC 4-time creator on June 3

@Brian Fair - Just checked your BackerKit account and your key is there waiting for you. :)

Please follow the instructions in the Beta Backer manual to get there. https://s3.amazonaws.com/www.harebrained-schemes.com/backer-beta/manual.pdf

      Enjoy the game!

    35. Brian Fair on June 3

RC the link info@hbs-studios.com does not go anywhere. How do I send a message to HBS about my situation?

    36. Brian Fair on June 3

      Np thanks for the response.

    37. RC on June 3

Ugh, sorry Brian. Typo, not disrespect ^_^

    38. RC on June 3

@Brain I just checked, you're right, their site is down. Are you getting an email bounce back too or just checked the site? If you haven't sent a direct email yet, that'd be the way to go: info@hbs-studios.com which uses a different email host so send them an email directly. H

However, they do give their Customer Support folks some desperately needed time off so they won't be responding tonight. (How dare they!)

    39. Brian Fair on June 3

I am a Mechwarrior level backer and have not received my beta key. The servers for HBS seem to be down as well. what do you recommend?

    40. RC on June 2

MECHWARRIORS!! Check your Backerkit. Don't wait for the email. If you've received it, the Key will be under "Get Your Digital Rewards" (I realize not everyone may have received it).

Remember you have to be a MECHWARRIOR tier backer or greater. MechJock, Recruit, and Embedded Correspondent don't qualify for Beta keys without upgrading first. (see post below) ^_^

    41. RC on June 2

@Jamie The "Forum Code Recruit" in your Backerkit infers you didn't back the game at the MechWarrior tier or more. The Beta is only included in those tiers. It's not included with Recruit or MechJock tiers.

f you did Back the game at the MechWarrior tier or more, then from what you're saying, you have the wrong information in your Backerkit and need to email HBS to get that corrected.

If you want to upgrade from a Recruit or MechJock tier TO a MechWarrior tier in order to get into the Beta, also email HBS. This is what they posted in the Kickstarter Comments tab section..

If you backed the game at a lower level and would like to upgrade, please send an email to info@hbs-studios.com with your Paypal account if you have one and we'll send you an invoice to cover the difference between your current pledge and the upgrade. If you do not have a Paypal account, please just confirm the email address at which you would like to receive the invoice. A PayPal account is not required to pay the invoice and you'll have an option to pay the invoice without one.

Also, if you are have specific customer service issues like not being able to access your BackerKit account, please email us at info@hbs-studios.com.

    42. Jamie McCormick on June 2

      @hbs thanks, email sent :)

    43. Harebrained Schemes LLC 4-time creator on June 2

If you are have specific customer service issues like not being able to access your BackerKit account, please email us at info@hbs-studios.com. Thanks!

There are not restrictions on streaming, taking screenshots or videotaping.

    45. Harebrained Schemes LLC 4-time creator on June 2

Keys have been distributed to all accounts and should be available in your BackerKit account if you backed at the MechWarrior ($50) level or above.

      Great House Wallpaper Pack

    48. Bill Briggs on June 2

Yeah, I've been seeing that the game is vastly skewed in favor of ballistic weapons (or energy weapons have been nerfed to hell). The AC/5 does as much damage as a PPC, while the AC/2 does Medium Laser damage. So, energy-based 'Mechs suck in comparison to their ballistic counterparts.

So, basically, tactics that would work in the board game are untenable in the PC version.

Lets hope they get the damage balanced before it moves much further forward.

I'm really hoping that much of the game has been stripped out to give us this "Beta"... Am I the only one that finds this a little lack luster?

    50. Jeff McNeil on June 2

12 Hours later and I'm still getting the "Content Servers Unreachable" error through Steam. I've done all the troubleshooting tips. The Beta will attempt to download and then just fail completely. Had some brief (as in, ten seconds) of download time about 15 minutes ago, but it just up and quit on me again. Anybody else have this issue?
