We are excited to share our new duo project, we are breathing. Over the course of the last year, since we first met at Bang on a Can's Summer Festival in 2017, we have been collaborating with one another on this new project, and now, we are eager to announce we will be performing in our first series of concerts in Australia this August!
Starting off in Connor’s hometown of Brisbane, we will be playing two very different shows. First off, we will be putting on a feature show underground in Brisbane’s iconic Spring Hill Reservoirs, featuring all new works in surround sound and live visuals. On the night we'll be joined by Brisbane’s own Kieran Welch and Loni Fitzpatrick, who each will be performing sets of electroacoustic works for viola and harp respectively. For our second Brisbane show, we're teaming up with Brisbane’s own Made Now Music concert series and label, performing an all-improv set of electroacoustic lushness alongside MNM's co-founder Caleb Colledge on percussion.
Next we're heading to Melbourne, where we’ll be playing an intimate show at the Hare Hole in Fitzroy alongside local experimental electronics and percussion duo "no compliments", Allison Wright and Madi Chwasta.
Finally, we are super excited to be playing at Extended Play, a new all-day festival presented by City Recital Hall, alongside an amazing line up including some of our musical heroes such as the Bang On Can All Stars, and Australia’s own Topology and Ensemble Offspring.
What can you expect from our shows?
Our shows will have chill atmospheres, where you can relax with a drink in your hand, make new friends, and experience a varied and exciting lineup of music unconstrained by any one genre. We aim to build a friendly and accepting community through our concerts!
Our sound incorporates aspects of post-minimalist composition freely blended with improvisation, influences ranging from folk music, electronica and alt-rock, all brought together on cello and electronics with a few other surprises in store! Our support acts have, like us, all come from a classical background somewhere along the way, but have brought that to create distinctly unique and widely carried styles.
Why we need your support?
As you can imagine, a bringing a project like this on tour requires a significant amount of funding. We are not touring to make profit, we’re in this for the love of it and to share our music with new audiences around Australia. We are asking for your help to make this possible, helping us to cover some of the travel costs included in touring. We are really excited to share this project with you, and have a number of fun rewards that you can check out below if you decide to support us!

We Are Breathing is the duo project of Australian composer/performer Connor D’Netto and American cellist Ben Baker.
Ben and Connor met in mid 2017 at Bang On A Can’s annual Summer Music Festival at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art where the two were both artists-in-residence. After, the pair sought to collaborate on a project bringing together their various musical backgrounds spanning classical, folk and electronic music, their love of diverse musical styles from minimalism, electronica, alt-rock and jazz, and their passion and drive to create and engage in art unconstrained by style or genre.
The result is We Are Breathing, a new music duo creating raw, tender and emotional sounds straddling across musical worlds. With Ben on cello and Connor on synths and live electronics, their music fuses Connor’s unique post-minimal compositional voice, Ben’s virtuosic playing, both as a contemporary classical musician and a folk musician and improviser, with live signal processing and electronics creating complexly layered immersive experiences.
Risks and challenges
Risk 1: Losing money on our travel costs
With Ben based in Boston and Connor currently living in London, traveling to Australia for these shows is one of the most significant costs involved. We are both committed to making this project happen no mater what, so we are putting in significant funds out of our own pockets to cover our international travel costs. However, with your support we might be able to cover some of our costs, which would be hugely appreciated!
Risk 2: Producing the concerts ourselves
We are producing the Brisbane Spring Hill Reservoir and Melbourne concerts ourselves. Therefore, we are in charge of all aspects of these shows: marketing, production, the lot. However, we have a good bit of experience in this area. Connor is the co-founder and artistic director of the Brisbane concert series Argo, which for the past three years has been creating immersive experiences of contemporary art music to create success in unusual venues, including twice in Spring Hill Reservoir.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
