Every community needs a voice. Here in the Southern Berkshires, that voice is WBCR-lp.
The Berkshire Community Radio Alliance (BCRA) is a fully independent and commercial free radio station in Great Barrington, Massachusetts focused on teaching the art of radio and providing access to the airwaves for all members of the Southern Berkshire community. We broadcast at 97.7 megahertz on the FM dial.
We seek to revitalize the station over the next 5 years to the point where we are a professional, highly visible, vibrant, locally created, independent radio station that is a vital part of the Southern Berkshire community.
Our immediate priority through this Kickstarter campaign is to secure the financial stability of our station for one year by raising $25,000.
A group of devoted volunteers representing a cross-section of our community from the arts, tech, business, music, and non-profit sectors, have developed a comprehensive 5-year plan for rebuilding a live, on-air presence at the center of Great Barrington.
One of our primary goals has recently been achieved: we have secured a studio space with a window on Main Street, Great Barrington. Located at 320 Main Street, we have signed a 3-year lease and we are moving in!
The response to our call for programmers has been fantastic, with 68 program applications received to date. Our programmers are from diverse backgrounds and are offering a truly amazing variety of shows including virtually all genres of music, talk, interview, news, drama, youth, politics, multicultural, education, literature, art, travel, children, comedy, community, with more applications being submitted on a regular basis!
We will then be working to build out our main studio in the store front. That is where our diverse group of programmers will receive their orientation and training, and where many of our shows will be aired and recorded.
A further goal is to enhance our current technology and training to produce high-quality, stereo streaming and podcasts to a global audience, and offer original content to other stations via syndication. This will greatly increase our listening audience/market.
Below is Annalena Barrett, one of WBCR-lp's early youth programmers, rockin' the microphone back in 2012!
Live music performances have always been a wildly popular feature of WBCR-lp programming! Here is Sky Smeed, who appeared live in the studio way back in 2011!
WBCR-lp can be clearly heard within a 10-mile radius of the transmitter and reaches approximately 13,000 residents in Egremont, Sheffield, and Great Barrington. This population nearly doubles in the summer months due to the significant influx of second homeowners and tourists. Great Barrington is the hub of the Southern Berkshires and is a thriving cultural destination for art, dance, film, history, music, theater, and home to over 70 restaurants. We are a region of exceptional natural beauty and outdoor recreation.
But, of course, streaming live on www.berkshireradio.org means our programming is able to reach a global audience. And podcasting will open up another world of access for all.
Please give as generously as you can!
We are proud and happy to offer you a wide selection of rewards that have been lovingly created and collected by our talented and generous community members in support of this beloved community radio station.
Risks and challenges
Of course, we need to raise this $25,000 for all the good reasons shared above. We have our wonderful space now on Main Street, Great Barrington, and it is ready and waiting for us to build it out into the soundproof studio our 62+ (and counting) programmers need to produce and air their shows. But we will be highly challenged to build out our studio if we are not successful in raising this $25,000 to secure our financial security for 1 year. With our overhead covered, we can move forward with the build-out. And we are fully relying on YOU to help us make this happen! Thank you, thank you. We can't do it without you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
