WAYWARD BEASTIES ART CAR 2017-2018
Simon and Finkle, a wayward pair, always wandering here or there. Hop on top when they stop! Or climb inside and enjoy the ride!
WAYWARD BEASTIES ART CAR - Sometime in life's journey, you'll run into someone with whom you'll want to wander around the world. Sometime you might even run into these two! Simon the Turtle and Finkle the Mouse are the wild wandering pair that makes up the Wayward Beasties Art Car! Collaborators Sam Ogden (@samogdenart) and Macy McKenny (@simonsaysmacy) are back again after Simon the Turtle's debut year at Burning Man 2017.
A shiny geodesic turtle shell riding on a custom-built steel chassis atop four 5000W electric brushless hub motors, Simon the Turtle is a giant remote-controlled car, turning heads while the operator pilots the beast onboard, inside, on top, or even walking/biking alongside!
As of November 2017, we've finished the initial fabrication for Simon the Turtle, creating the chassis and platform from nothing more than steel and wheels for BM 2017. We hauled Simon out to Black Rock City and successfully registered with the Department of Mutant vehicles for both our daytime and night time licenses (Thanks DMV Hotties!). We journeyed across the playa, had lots of fun, snuggled, and made some new friends.
While we faced many challenges, the Turtle Team came well-prepared. Burning Man 2017 was a successful adventure, allowing us to troubleshoot real scenarios and test our backup plans, yielding lots of important improvements for the coming year. With your help we'll purchase faster, higher-powered 300Amp Roboteq motor controllers and LiPo batteries to replace our heavy AGM batteries. We'll create the crow's nest observation platform, refine the design of the head/face, and fabricate our favorite mouse pal Finkle to guide our turtley travels!
Conceived at BRC 2016, Simon the Turtle is an experimental vehicle for providing both a warm comfortable intimate space inside of Simon's shell and an elevated vantage point from up top to safely (and slowly) transport riders, with his companion Finkle the mouse guiding the way to your next adventure!
A MOOP-hungry monster, Simon will happily gobble up bottles, cans, feathers, cigarette butts, and any other stray bits you have to feed him! (MOOP = Matter-Out-Of-Place) Not only will he transport wayward wanderers, Simon provides a friendly way to Leave-No-Trace! FEED THE TURTLE!
Simon was created based on Macy's sculpture "Wayward Beasties." SAMACY (Sam and Macy) intend to bring the art car to various festivals and art events throughout the year (including Burning Man) to provide participants with unforgettable and unique experiences to remember for a lifetime... and help clean up, one piece of MOOP at a time...

Risks and challenges
Building an art car is not a small project, but after building the Wayward Beasties steel chassis from scratch last year, we will spend this year refining our design instead of starting anew. Replacing our big heavy solar batteries with LiPos. Replacing broken LED strips. Adding electronic sensors. Programming light/movement routines etc. Our kickstarter will not only help us to raise the funds for design updates, we'll also focus on building our Turtle Team to spread the word about LEAVE NO TRACE!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
