About this project
About This Project
P. Craig Russell’s Guide to Graphic Storytelling Series 2 is a continuation of the acclaimed educational series that teaches the art of graphic storytelling, also known as “Comics.”
The purpose of the project is to increase the awareness of comics as a serious art form, and to teach processes and techniques that assist in the creation of effective graphic storytelling.
P. Craig Russell’s Guide to Graphic Storytelling Series 1 was successfully funded via Kickstarter and the project was successfully completed. The free GTGS Series 1 lesson videos and the finished Special Edition DVD can be seen at P. Craig Russell's Official Website.
An Even More Ambitious Series 2
As with Series 1, a generous sampling of the Series 2 lesson videos will be put online, free of charge, for students, educators, budding creators and anyone else interested in the visual arts. A Guide to Graphic Storytelling Series 2 Special Edition DVD will be produced that contains all of the web lessons, as well as additional DVD-exclusive lesson videos and DVD-exclusive bonus segments. Most of our backers seem to prefer having physical media, so the DVD exclusives will be quite extensive.
Lessons will feature P. Craig Russell examining sequences from Conan and the Jewels of Gwahlur, Coraline, Stormbringer, The Gift of the Magi, The Dream Hunters and many more. See this campaign's "Updates" tab for more extensive previews of the pages that will be examined.
Original Art Deluxe Pledge Package
The Signed & Limited Study Guide
The Series 2 Study Guide features reproductions of the original b&w art that will be examined in the lessons—as of now, it's looking to be about 45 single-sided 11 by 17" pages. The Study Guide is an invaluable aid for studying page layout, lettering placement, fine line work, etc. P. Craig Russell will be personally signing and numbering the cover pages for the Study Guides, so they will be very limited (and exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign).
Other rewards include Series 1 and Series 2 DVDs, project credits and a benefit party/dinner/musicale at the artist's home!
The instructor is award-winning writer/artist/illustrator P. Craig Russell. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting, Russell has run the gamut in comics. After establishing a name for himself at Marvel on Killraven and Dr. Strange, he went on to become one of the pioneers in opening new vistas for this underestimated field with, among other works, adaptations of operas by Mozart (The Magic Flute), Strauss (Salome) and Wagner (The Ring of the Nibelung). His more recent work includes comics adaptations of both Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Gaiman’s The Sandman: The Dream Hunters.
The filmmaker is Wayne Alan Harold. A graduate of Kent State University with a degree in Telecommunications and Film, Harold has over two decades of experience in independent film and video. His most recent feature-length project, Night Music: The Art of P. Craig Russell, has had public screenings at The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus. One of the most well-received portions of that production—Russell’s expert and engaging demonstrations of panel-to-panel storytelling—served as the genesis of the Graphic Storytelling educational series.
What The Funds Are For
The current Kickstarter goal amount is the bare minimum needed to complete this more ambitious Series 2. Funds are needed for the creation of the DVDs, the extensive 11 by 17" Study Guides and the fine art Giclée prints, as well as packaging materials, shipping and postage fees, Kickstarter fees, Amazon credit card processing fees, etc. If we can somehow raise more than the $5000 goal, we will be able to produce additional remote segments for the DVD, including (possibly) P. Craig Russell interacting with other comic-book creators.
