About this project
P. Craig Russell’s Guide to Graphic Storytelling is a web series (and companion DVD) consisting of educational videos that teach the art of graphic storytelling, also known as “Comics.”
The purpose of the project is to increase the awareness of comics as a serious art form, and to teach processes and techniques that assist in the creation of effective graphic storytelling.
Approximately 60 minutes of lesson videos will be put online, free of charge, for students, educators, budding creators and anyone else interested in the visual arts. A companion DVD will be produced that contains all of the online video lessons, as well as additional segments that will be exclusive to the DVD.
Lessons include how to properly introduce your story, how to establish and visualize the emotional dynamics of your characters, the introduction of characters, the introduction and use of props, effective page composition, the use of parallel narrative and more.
The instructor is acclaimed illustrator P. Craig Russell. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting, Russell has run the gamut in comics. After establishing a name for himself at Marvel on KILLRAVEN and DR. STRANGE, he went on to become one of the pioneers in opening new vistas for this underestimated field with, among other works, adaptations of operas by Mozart (THE MAGIC FLUTE), Strauss (SALOME) and Wagner (THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG). His more recent work includes comics adaptations of both Neil Gaiman’s CORALINE and Gaiman’s SANDMAN: THE DREAM HUNTERS.
The filmmaker is Wayne Alan Harold. A graduate of Kent State University with a degree in Telecommunications and Film, Harold has over two decades of experience in independent film and video. His most recent feature-length project, NIGHT MUSIC: THE ART OF P. CRAIG RUSSELL, has had public screenings at The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus. One of the most well-received portions of that production—Russell’s expert and engaging demonstrations of panel-to-panel storytelling—served as the genesis of this educational project.
The current Kickstarter goal amount is the bare minimum needed to complete approximately 60 minutes worth of instructional videos. If we can somehow make it over that goal, we would be able to spend additional time on animating the comic art for the lessons and improving the production values of the overall project. It would also enable us to produce additional high-quality segments for the DVD, and to help with the manufacturing of the discs. And of course, funds will also go towards the production and postage of our rewards. Please take a look at our amazing giveaways and consider helping to make this important project happen. Thank you for your time and attention!
PLEASE NOTE: You cannot make multiple pledges. If you wish to pledge for more than one thing, please add those amounts to your initial pledge and notify us as to what they are.
FOR OUR INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS: Our rewards include shipping costs, but please add $5 if you live outside the continental United States to help cover the added shipping expense. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support!
