A quick (but important) reminder that we are publishing this hardcover book independently—it will not be available at a lower price in the future via Amazon, other publishers, retailers, etc. Only your pledge and/or sharing can make it a reality.
What People Are Saying
"But the implicit kicker in this Kickstarted volume is that these are the sketches that have informed his finished work over the years. In the book you’ll find highly recognizable genesis-points for characters and specific storytelling moments that are bound to make you feel like an insider in those moments of creation."
"It’s kind of like uncovering buried treasure to get a hold of this book, no doubt, and it’s also a wonderful way to preserve Russell’s work and get it into the hands of enthusiasts, art students, and scholars of the medium."

About the Artist
After establishing a name for himself at Marvel on KILLRAVEN and DR. STRANGE, P. Craig Russell went on to become one of the pioneers in opening new vistas for this underestimated field with, among other works, adaptations of operas by Mozart (THE MAGIC FLUTE), Strauss (SALOME) and Wagner (THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG).
Russell is considered by most fans to be the definitive artist of the comics version of Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné and has also created stellar visualizations of characters as diverse as Doctor Strange, Batman, The Sandman, Death, Conan, Hellboy and The Spirit. He has also adapted and beautifully illustrated five volumes of THE FAIRY TALES OF OSCAR WILDE.
Some of his most acclaimed work has been with Newbery award-winning writer Neil Gaiman, first on the landmark 50th issue of THE SANDMAN for DC Comics/Vertigo, then with widely-seen graphic novel adaptations of Gaiman's MURDER MYSTERIES, CORALINE and THE GRAVEYARD BOOK.
The Sketchbook Archives
Now, for the first time, we're drawing back the curtain for a look at this amazing artist's sketchbooks, beautifully reproduced in THE P. CRAIG RUSSELL SKETCHBOOK ARCHIVES!
This epic hardcover volume gives you an as-yet-unseen look at the master artist's actual drawing process with figure studies, character designs, expression and gesture studies and more. Every stunning illustration is meticulously scanned from Craig's personal, private sketchbooks, and the artist himself provides illuminating background information and notes.
We're planning for the book to be over 250 pages, approximately 11" by 8.5" dimension-wise (landscape-formatted), with a matte-laminated hardcover.
Three hardcover editions are being offered
1. The "Standard Edition" is just as it sounds—the hardcover book itself.
2. The "Signature Edition" includes a special bookplate that is personally signed by P. Craig Russell.
3. The "Sketch Edition" includes a different bookplate that is both SIGNED and NUMBERED by the artist—in addition to an ORIGINAL SKETCH by P. Craig Russell. The sketch will be a head shot of your choice of The Sandman, Elric or Brunhilde. You will also have the option of having Craig draw it on a separate piece of paper, or in the book itself. This Kickstarter-exclusive Sketch Edition will be limited to no more than 100 copies.
Whether you're an artist, aspiring artist, or just an avid art lover, you'll be sure to treasure THE P. CRAIG RUSSELL SKETCHBOOK ARCHIVES for decades to come.

Risks and challenges
Printing a hardcover book of this size is very expensive, both for the actual printing and for the overseas shipping—via ocean liner—from China. The latter shipping alone takes an estimated five weeks.
Our costs to ship even a single heavy book back out to our non-U.S. backers is also very expensive, so we do have to charge extra for shipping outside of the continental U.S.A. We hope that our overseas friends will understand that we have no control over that unfortunate reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
