Cynthia: I'm so sorry you didn't like the DIY kit. I'm guessing it's a little less exciting for people who already live in Portland, since it was mostly going to people who couldn't make it here for XOXO. Only three DIY kits went to Oregon, with everyone else out of state. (20 were from overseas, including Brazil, New Zealand, India, Switzerland, Denmark, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates!) For those people, I think receiving a box of Portland-made goodies is a bit more special than for people who live here.

I tried to explain the thought behind every item in the kit on the insert, posted here:

I really tried to focus on high quality in a small package. The coffee was Coava's El Ishco from El Salvador, single-origin beans and roasted and hand-bagged to order for XOXO backers from one of the world's best roasteries. The shirts are the best possible t-shirt fabric we could find, American Apparel's tri-blend. And the pads you mentioned are Aaron Draplin's Field Notes ( in an XOXO-exclusive color that will never get made again. The Field Notes alone are worth $30 retail, though likely higher since they're now sought after by Field Notes collectors.

Dave: Thanks for the nice words! I love the photo of Aaron Draplin confronted with the XOXO Field Notes:

Love the box of goodies - coffee showed up just as I ran out (and now I need more where that came from), and all the bits and pieces feel like they fit the conference atmosphere just right.

Bonus points for my wife's excitement over all the purple notebooks.

My $100 DIY backer kit consists of a bag of coffee beans, a thinnish t-shirt, a small tote bag, 6 tiny pads of graph paper, a few buttons and miscellaneous postcards. Gotta admit, I expected a bit more than maybe 30 bucks retail in standard conference tschotkes. I'll go watch the videos; maybe then I'll get into that community vibe.

I am also wondering when the XOXO DIY/$100 backer kits will be sent out. I had thought it would be October and it is nearing the end of November. Thank You

    5. Aviatrix on November 5, 2012

Any idea when the XOXO DIY Kit/$100 backer kits will be sent out?

    6. Eric "Webb" Prentice on October 22, 2012

I'm looking for a video of the beginning of the conference where Andy & Andy stood up and talked about the community vibe they wanted for the conference and encouraged people to chat in line for the trucks and to walk up to people standing alone or groups of people and introduce themselves. It was very cool to see what resulted from those simple instructions. Is it on video anywhere?

    7. Gui Ambros on October 18, 2012

Already got the secret password, thanks Andy. Just watched the first couple of talks, and they're great.
Thanks again for making this happen. Looking forward to attend next year!

    8. Andy Baio 3-time creator on September 26, 2012

Working on it as we speak. Hoping to have them all up for backers early next week!

    9. Gui Ambros on September 25, 2012

Heard great things about the event. Congrats guys! Looking forward to attending in person next year.
Andy, any idea when the videos of the talks will be made available?

    13. Brad Barrish on August 30, 2012

Yeah, spoke to them yesterday. All good. Just figured I would ask.

    14. Andy Baio 3-time creator on August 30, 2012

@whatevernevermind Have you talked to them recently? We just added a few more rooms to the block. If those are sold out, there's not much more I can do... You'll have to switch to a room at the regular price.

    15. Brad Barrish on August 29, 2012

Hi Andy. I made a reservation at The Westin shortly after you reserved the block of rooms and I tried to change it from a king to a room with double beds and no more rooms of that kind are available. Any chance you can ask about getting on more room with two beds so I can make the change? I would really appreciate it.

Hey Kickstarter - unfortunately we're not going to be able to make it to XOXO (5000 miles would have been quite an epic journey!) so we have two tickets available.

Contact and we'll figure out how to make the transfer :)

      Hey SF/Bay Area folks!

I'm interested in feeling-out interest for folks maybe booking a group-train, to ride Amtrak up to Portland? I'd personally also like to bring my bicycle up and backpack my gear (gotta get in the Portlandia spirit of it!). Heck we could even have someone teach an artisan knot-tying class for the ride.

Would anybody else be interested in gathering together a group train booking? With or without bicycles? One way (which one) or both ways?

I'm thinking it could be a lot of fun, and a great way to compliment the more intimate conference experience. It's an 18 hour ride- and understandably, that could be a bit much for some folks.

Please send me a note at: if you think you might be game to do this! Thx!

    32. Eric Schmidt on July 11, 2012

Add me to the list of people who'd like to share a room. We should get a Facebook group or something going!

    33. Kevin Clark on June 22, 2012

Hi everyone - is anyone else looking to share a room at one of the conference hotels and cut down costs? Is there a list of group for people looking to share?

    34. Jim Crews on June 18, 2012

Very pumped to have snagged one of the last tickets! Excited to meet everyone and be a part of the first ever XOXO.

I've released the project I'm hoping to bring with me to XOXO. It's a gift economy based on recurring micro-payments to people who do great work. Kind of like Kickstarter but explicitly for people (not just projects). Right now it's aimed at programmers on Github, hopefully by XOXO we'll have it opened up to Twitter, Facebook, etc.

      See you in September! :-)

    37. JoyceMSullivan on May 31, 2012

Hello Andy et al. Delighted to be part of the XOXO Festival. Too late to get an IRL ticket but wil be there with my XOXO DIY Kit!

    38. Kai Gradert on May 29, 2012

Very excited about this. Never been to Portland, so this will be twice the fun :-)

    39. Andy Baio 3-time creator on May 24, 2012

Hey, everyone! I'm not a huge fan of Jupiter myself... It's close, but since it's part of the Doug Fir Lounge, tends to get pretty loud. If you're young, hard of hearing, or otherwise don't mind a lively atmosphere, it's a great choice. We're working with hotels to announce block discounts very soon, and will be running shuttles to/from XOXO.

    40. Natalie on May 24, 2012

David A. Shamma: Check out the Jupiter Hotel - 10 min walk and pretty fun. Highest recommended place to stay from my Portland friends.

    41. Natalie on May 24, 2012

Karen and I are going to work on some crafts to hand out - if you're in SF let us know if you're interested in collaborating aka slave labor.

    42. Remis Velisque on May 24, 2012

So very happy to have a ticket. Looking forward to planning and plotting with old geek friends from around the country as well as hopefully making some new ones. Let's congeal! Or gel... or there must be a better term... :)

My husband Sean Bonner is sleeping right now in Tokyo and is going to be sooo pissed he can't buy a ticket and there are only a few left. EEp

This looks like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, just secured my ticket. Really looking forward to being a part of this kickoff event.

    47. David A. Shamma on May 24, 2012

Any chance you all can provide some accommodations suggestions for those of us flying in?

    48. Natalie on May 24, 2012

Hey Andy - hit you up on FB about this too. Just bought a tix and would love to help where I can. Speaker suggestions, ambiance, interpretive dance, you name it. Excited for this!

    49. Seamus Condron on May 23, 2012

This year was the first year I skipped SXSW after attending for four years straight. I was tired of being trampled and tripping over Chevy Volts. Hoping XOXO is the cure for the Austin blues.
