- WHERE DO our clothes really COME FROM?
- WHAT DO the labels on our favorite clothes really MEAN?
Hi, we're Corina (an architect), and Federica (a fashion product manager). When we asked ourselves these questions, we realized that we didn't like the answers, and that it was time for us to do things differently, ourselves. So we created WAVELENGTH: a dynamic collective of young creative minds based in Brussels, Belgium.
We are a social project: We work with unemployed people and we promote fair working conditions.
We are a sustainable project: we promote traceability, we source and produce in small batches 100% locally in Europe.
We are an artistic project: we give the chance to young artists to showcase their work through our clothes and objects.

This is a turning point campaign for our label. We are 100% Made in Europe and we are actively promoting traceability in fashion. We want to engage people to reflect and, by helping small labels like us to break through, OUR BACKERS become part of the change. We are David against Goliath (slow fashion and socially conscious aware people vs. profit-driven and mass production-oriented corporations), but we believe that many Davids can overturn Goliath.
For the 2017 collection, we use unique printed fabrics with patterns that are designed by our artists for WAVELENGTH only, produced in limited quantities, thus making our pieces one-of-a-kind collectors' items.
MEET THE ARTIST - Aurélie Carnoy /// video by cloud machine
Aurélie Carnoy is the creator of the Marble pattern. A Belgian textile designer, Aurélie developed her passion for threads and yarns at the young age of 12, and since then she has not stopped knitting, crocheting, screen-printing and designing. Her designs are to be found here aureliecarnoy.be and we had a hard time making up our minds on what to choose for our 2017 collection.
MEET THE ARTIST - Diam Coly /// video by cloud machine
Diam Coly is the creator of the Concrete Tray. Parisian born and Brussels adopted, Diam has started her creative career with a collection of up-cycled furniture. But it's with concrete that she has really fallen in love. Through her skillful use of colors and gilding, Diam has given new life to this rough material. You can find her collection of planters, mirrors, lamps and others design objects here: Les Pieds de Biche
MEET THE ARTIST - Kim Vande Pitte /// video by cloud machine
Kim Vande Pitte is the creator of Moiré Triangles pattern. She is a young textile designer based in Brussels who has been producing amazing textiles in her atelier since 2012. Her work explores the infinite possibilities offered by straight lines, alternating simplicity and intricate designs, and using both screen and digital printing techniques.Kim's patterns can be found here kvp-textile-design.com.
MEET THE ARTIST - Valeria Pigozzi /// video by cloud machine
Valeria Pigozzi is the creator of Col Moore illustration, better known as the Mountain illustration, for our 2017 collection. Architect and keen illustrator, Valeria turns the world into lines, dots, and black & white tones. Her love of nature shows in all her work. Vale (for friends) exhibits some of her illustrations here: valeworks.portfoliobox.net.

WAVELENGTH stands for slow fashion.
Slow fashion means designing, creating, and buying quality clothes that are made to last. Slow fashion encourages slower production schedules, fair wages, lower carbon footprints, and (ideally) zero waste.

WAVELENGTH stands for traceability.
When your dress says 'Made in France' or 'Made in Italy', that's not always the case: it will often have been made cheaply and under poor labor conditions outside Europe, but finished and packaged in Europe so it can get that label. And you don't even know where the fabric comes from and how it was made.
WAVELENGTH's solution >>> you can trust our labels, which clearly tell you where your clothing was made, where the fabric came from and who designed the fabric pattern for us. You get the full story behind each of our pieces.

WAVELENGTH stands for social responsability.
Belgium and the European Union have a long textile tradition, but in the last decades employment in this sector has steadily decreased. Every time a specialized atelier closes its doors, we not only lose jobs but also know-how. And it is notoriously tough to get a job in the creative industries, especially for young people: designers all too often find themselves working for free or paid very little.
WAVELENGTH's solution >>> we reached out to a social integration atelier in Brussels, RecréArt. Here, people on welfare, are trained to go back into the job market. At RecréArt, we actually get to meet the people who physically create our pieces. Like this we can match a face to each garment that has been tailored for us. For the most intricate patterns, we work with a Brussels-based technical studio. Production takes place in small batches within Europe. Our creative minds are also all local: our textile designers, illustrators, knitters and product designers based in Brussels.

WAVELENGTH stands for sustainability.
Fast fashion clothing collections are based on the most recent fashion trends. They are designed and manufactured quickly and cheaply, often in developing countries where workers are underpaid. Quality is sacrificed for the cheapest price, for high-volume mass production. This has a huge impact on the environment.
WAVELENGTH's solution >>> we make one capsule collection per year with limited quantities. This works because our clothes can be worn in all seasons. This slow fashion approach means that we can closely follow all the phases of the design and production process. We give ourselves the TIME to source the best fabrics and best producers in the European Union to fully study our prototypes, to innovate, to get feedback from our users and to react on this feedback. We only work with partners within the EU and who are certified by OEKO-TEX® for product safety and sustainable production in the textile industry.

We want everyone to know their own beauty. We are body-positive, and we reject unattainable beauty standards touted by the media. We make clothes for everybody who wants beauty and comfort in their lives.

All of this care comes with a cost, and that’s why we need people like you who believe in our initiative.
The money you pledge will cover the expenses generated by the design and production of the 2017 WAVELENGTH collection. This includes:
- Fabric cost (high quality fabrics, raw and digitally printed).
- The production of garments at the social atelier based in Brussels and in the other highly specialized ateliers elsewhere in the EU.
- The works of our artists.
- The digital development of our sewing patterns.
- Kickstarter campaign rewards.
- Kickstarter fees.

For the 2017 collection, we use unique printed fabrics with patterns that are designed by our artists for WAVELENGTH only, produced in limited quantities, thus making our pieces one-of-a-kind collectors' items. And you have the chance to own one of these pieces, made with exceptional European craftmanship and know-how!
But above all, you will help people who are unemployed to get back on their feet. And you will know that you have contributed to a collective of creators who bring value back to the community.
Your contribution will get you as rewards our tops, dresses or coats; (see the complete collection table above) and design objects: scarves, belts, dresses, tote bags, agendas.

* We ship worldwide - custom fees not included.
** Many of our collection pieces are unique, due to the placement of the digital pattern and the way the fabric is cut.

We work as a collective, in a flexible manner. Each of us has their own creative business outside of WAVELENGTH, but we also choose to pour our time and skills into WAVELENGTH yearly collection. We share part of our resources and we get to advance together as a stronger team in this way. The idea is to work in synergy at all times:

She is the creator of the beautiful concrete trays that are part of our design objects collection. Her work is featured here lespiedsdebiche.be.

Alexandru Poliac and Andrés Gómez are the masterminds behind Cloud Machine, video production company based in Brussels. They have been working unceasingly to beautifully translate our ideas on video. Without their talent and skills, we would not have been able to show you how the WAVELENGTH collective works. Find their amazing work at cloudmachine.be/

Corina Pitic and Federica Richiardone are the founders of WAVELENGTH and the creators of each collection. Both avid design consumers, they decided to join forces and expertise in 2015 to create a project that could help designers and artists to ‘showcase’ their talents.

Risks and challenges
Fashion products usually have a short life cycle, which increases the challenges of NEW product development. Hence, unforeseen obstacles, production delays, increased costs, and difficulty in scheduling may arise.
WAVELENGTH's main risks and challenges are:
• MANUFACTURING and DELIVERY: by producing smaller quantities, production time is longer as manufacturers need to give priority to bigger volume. Knowing this, we have purposefully stretched our anticipated delivery periods.
• DIGITAL PRINT INCONGRUITIES: printing fabrics is a complex process and results can vary from supplier to supplier. That’s why we have selected different companies to work with for different fabrics, and we have already been running several print tests in order to be sure of the final results.
• SIZING: we offer 3 sizes: Small, Medium and Large. Since sizes vary from country to country globally, please contact us for more details on actual fit.
If any delays do occur, we will keep you informed on our progress and we will work hard to get the pieces into your hands as soon as we can.
