UPDATE #1 - The Road So Far..
I wanted to take the time and thank everyone for all their feedback so far, as well as thank those who have backed our project! I wanted to spend a little bit more time talking about our product.
Prototype: Alpha Prototype This is as alpha as it gets. The controller was designed by a design team with experience in this type of work. To even get to the point to get quotes for molds you need a design.
I wish it was as simple as asking people, “Hey. I want to make something exactly like this. What are the cost of molds, plastic, etc?” You won’t get a response, and if you do, it’s not one you can even start to base per unit cost on.
Getting to the point we are now, we are able to get exact quotes on manufacturing the controller in its current form. The controller paint job is raw for sure. But that does not represent the final product at all. We are going for a finish similar to the GC controllers, and not glossy like the WiiU. Simply put some delays happened. This was not as easy as just 3D printing this off a Makerbot in a weekend. To do it right took time.
As for rumble, that is not a 'last gen' feature. It is important to us and will be inside the controller. We are still working on what exact motor we want to use, but force feedback will be built into each WaveDash.
400K is a lot of money, but it’s the money it will take to do the job right. We did not want to set a goal that was low and not be able to produce a high quality product. Last thing I wanted to do was to be stuck 5 months from now, out of cash and owing 100K to finish the controllers.
Elephant in the room: The Adapter
The adapter is what a lot of people were asking for, the ability to use GameCube controllers on the WiiU. As a gamer, I am happy Nintendo was able to listen to their fans. 7 months ago, we were not too sure that would happen. At that time we started looking into the cost of doing it ourselves, and what we would want from it. Compatibility was a huge part of that. So we made sure to update the analog sticks to “clickable’ along with being full size, a larger D-pad for classic play, and wireless. Any WiiU game that supports the WiiU Pro Controller, The WaveDash will function with.
Thank you for reading, and our e-mail is always open. As well as any questions on KickStarter itself.
The WaveDash looks to fill the hole left in the WiiU gaming community for a modern controller with today's standard inputs.
What is the WaveDash?
The WaveDash is based off the fan favorite controller of the past with some new exciting features.
What have we Achieved so far?
Since the start of the year, we have worked to create the best third party option for the Nintendo WiiU console. We have come a long way fast. From talking about an idea over beers, to starting the business and beginning work on the prototype, to contacting major manufacturers for quotes.
This Controller represents the near final build of the shell. Details may change slightly, but we are pleased with the feel we have achieved.
Paint / Finish will be improved immensely. This is our first alpha Prototype. Our Beta prototype will mirror the look and feel of what our final product will be.
Over the coming weeks we aim to get the controller into the hands as of as many people as possible; and will be present at E3 2014 to do just that.
While other options are available, The WaveDash is the only controller that can provide classic feel with full compatibility.
Why are we asking for your support?
Our goal is to take a retro style game controller, that is loved by its community, and transport it to a current gen system.
With your help, we will be able to offer current players the feeling of one of the best style of controllers ever made; but with the modern features that today's gamers demand.
We need your help to get to the next stage of internal design and manufacturing.
This Kickstarter will cover the cost of design, circuiting, tooling, materials, testing, and, most importantly, shipping.
We are confident that our product will exceed your expectations.
WaveDash - Cost
What exactly are you paying for in each controller? Quality. Quality chips, quality plastics, and lasting durability. It is our goal to create a premium experience. Our breakdown:
Who We Are
Chad Sachs - Blockbuster World Video Game Championship II - Store Champion - Willoughby Ohio
A passion for video games since playing Super Mario Bros. 3 with his mother, Chad is committed to bringing quality products to like-minded gamers. For Chad, WaveDash is more than a controller; it's a love letter to our favorite pastime.
Ryan DeLang - #1 Soft Core Echoing Fury/Won Khim Lau Monk in the world for Diablo 3
Ryan grew up as a gamer on the Nintendo, Sony, and PC games. When not managing his career or marriage, he passes the time by playing competitively in Magic the Gathering or training his two-year-old son in the ways of gaming.
We wanted to address concerns that are common for Video Game related projects on KickStarter.
Quality is our top priority. As major Video Game players ourselves, we wish to create a premium controller that you will be able to use for years to come.
It's important to remember that Kickstarter is not a store—you are pledging support to a startup company that is going down the path of producing a product. One part of the "reward" is getting an inside view at the process and our admiration for putting your conviction in WaveDash.
B.O.M for components, and prototypes have been made. Things will inevitably change between the prototype stage and the final product. Hopefully those changes will be beneficial. However if the worst occurs we will be honest about any issues.
We will be traveling to the factory and will do everything in our power to prevent delays and get you the final product quickly.
Should any issues arise with shipping, we will work to rectify the situation. Your donation is a good faith gesture and we want to live up to that confidence you have in us.
