About this project
Thanks for all the support! So excited that we are funded! Check UPDATES for latest news, and visit www.wattvision.com for more info.
Wattvision is an energy sensor and mobile app that helps you save money on energy by giving you a live view of your energy use. By setting goals and tracking your spending in real-time, you’ll never be surprised by your energy bill again. Wattvision is designed with a great end-to-end user experience in mind. How much money are you spending on energy right now? You’ll always know with Wattvision.
“If Apple created an energy monitor - it would be the Wattvision. I love it.” - David G, real Wattvision user
“The Wattvision monitor has already paid for itself in the first 3 months and now I receive credits on my bills.” - Brandon D, real Wattvision user
How does it work?
Wattvision works by gathering data from your electricity meter -- that funky device that wasn’t designed by user experience experts. Setup is easy: just surface-mount your Wattvision Energy Sensor to the outside of your meter, connect the Wattvision Gateway to your network, and then go online on your computer or mobile device to see and analyze your real-time energy data.
If you have an analog meter, our analog sensors will watch and time the rotations of the disk inside your meter. Each rotation marks a fixed quantity of energy used by your house. If you have a digital meter, our digital sensor will read the infrared pulses emitted by your meter that also mark the energy coming from the grid. Your sensor sends the data through your home network (via the Wattvision Gateway), to Wattvision servers. You can then view the data live on your mobile device, on your computer, or anywhere you choose. Look at historical trends in your energy use, receive e-mail and text message alerts, and track your home’s overall efficiency compared to similar homes.
Unlike most systems, there is no electrician required to set up Wattvision! Because we connect to your meter, we track your whole home's energy use -- not just one outlet or one appliance!
How can I use Wattvision?
- Save money by setting daily energy spending goals, and track your progress against these goals in real-time.
- See if the green changes you make are actually making a difference.
- Compare and rank your home with similar homes across the country.
- Find energy-draining devices, including faulty appliances.
- Receive alerts and catch problems before you get an unusually high energy bill.
- Use our API to integrate data into your home automation system or send to other 3rd party services for detailed analysis.
The Project: Wattvision 2
We have great feedback from our amazing early adopters across the country, and we’re ready to act on this feedback and expand Wattvision to more users. That’s where you come in, Kickstarter.
We’ve started work on Wattvision 2: a complete remake of our hardware from the ground up, that features broader compatibility, more networking options, higher reliability and even easier setup. But we can’t make this happen without your support.
With a successful kickstarter campaign, we’ll be able to:
- Complete development of Wattvision 2
- Make a large production run to get Wattvision 2 in your hands
- Expand our reach to more types of power meters -- our goal is ALL meters
- Support Ethernet and more types of wireless networks (specifically g and n)
Features and Specs for Wattvision 2
- Durable, heavy-duty sensors designed for outdoor use
- Set and forget (no batteries involved)
- Compatible with most analog and digital power meters
- Accurate to within 2 watts
- Data updated ~ every 10 seconds
- Quick and easy to set up
- Manufactured in the USA
- iPhone and Android support
- E-mail and text message alerts and recommendations
- Data download into Excel or any other software
- Developer API for custom and 3rd party applications
- Shared community energy graphs
- Top Energy Savers Rankings
Become a Wattvisionary by pledging to our Kickstarter campaign today. Your pledge will help us create the hardware and software needed to realize our collective vision for a more energy efficient future!
We sold out of the first version of Wattvision on Amazon, and received a solid 5 stars across 8 user-submitted reviews. Here are some excerpts:
"Simplicity wins compared to the competition"
"My New neurosis"
"Simple, Effective Energy Monitoring"
"It paid for itself in 3 months"
"The one that works great"
"Super cool device great value"
+Most of our customers have discovered phantom loads, appliances which periodically turn on and off and cost money in the background, and then added schedules or made adjustments. With Wattvision you can see how much it costs you to run anything from a light bulb to a microwave to a hair dryer.
+A customer calculated the cost of drying a load of clothes, and decided to air dry his family’s clothes after discovering the high cost (hard to beat sun and wind power!)
+An industrial customer in Michigan uses Wattvision to avoid a higher cost of energy that can kick in when their industrial equipment draws too much power.
+A customer with solar panels had been unable to zero his energy bill, but with Wattvision he was able to make the changes that now allow him to get paid by his utility each month
Wattvision allows you to download data as fast as we receive it, through our download API. Pretty neat stuff. Researchers and third parties have already shown that it’s possible to take whole house data and break it down by appliance, a scenario we’re excited to enable.
While we make strides to use clean and renewable energy in the future, it’s vital to remember that the cleanest energy is the energy we never use. One of the most important steps towards improving our energy habits is simply to cut down on our existing energy use, and we can do that by first knowing where we stand. Wattvision makes this possible by showing you your real-time energy use on the web or on your phone. We want everyone to take charge of their energy lifestyle and bring the future to the present!

You thought you got us, didn't you? Wattvision uses <2 watts of power.
Wattvision is powered by a standard AC wall adapter (included) that plugs in to the Gateway (it's 12V DC). In international situations, we can send you a 100-240v AC to 12v DC adapter.
Check out the Sensor Selection Guide: http://www.wattvision.com/info/products/selection_guide OR
Just email or tweet us a photo of your meter and we'll let you know: email@example.com, or tweet at @wattvision.
Once you have the sensor and gateway, Wattvision’s service is free to use for all Kickstarters! We do not have monthly fees for typical consumer use. The people we charge monthly fees to are our commercial customers, or customers with multiple sites -- that sort of thing.
Yes, our sensors need 12v DC power to work. However, we ask that you please add $30 to your pledge for shipping Internationally. Contact us with a photo of your meter to confirm, but if you have an analog meter, for example, it probably will.
Since our sensors surface mount on meters and are easily removed and replaced, we’ve never had a power company frown upon our sensors.
In most cases yes -- but there are exceptions. See the sensor selection guide. We are working to build compatibility for all meters.
Why yes, you can. Check out our API page for more info or contact us.
Yep, just use our developer API to get access to your data stream.
Although that's a great idea and we're looking into it for future products, the Kickstarter version of Wattvision will not have this functionality.
Wattvision's sensors are extremely durable, water-proof, and wind-resistant so they're prepared for the elements. You will typically leave the wifi gateway inside, plugged into a power outlet and closer to your wireless router.
Wattvision works on most electric meters, not just ones on homes. This means you can also get Wattvision for your school, church, gym, or other building.
As long as you have access to your electricity meter, wattvision can work for you. Put the sensor on the electricity meter, and connect the gateway to wall power and a nearby wifi network. Once that's done, the data will be available at wattvision.
