About this project
Founded in 2015, the first Watson backpack was built to solve a problem nobody else was - backpacks weren’t designed for urban knowledge workers and yet that’s who was buying them and carrying them to work every day. Borne out of the tech communities of San Francisco and Toronto, our customer's needs differ greatly from hikers, students, and travellers. They value smart usability, efficiency, innovation, quality of materials, design, and personal comfort. Watson is the first backpack created with these values as a compass.
Smart usability, stunning design, weightless comfort - no compromises. Backed by intensive research, we've hacked the everyday carry with predictive design - features crafted around your daily routine. Level-up your everyday carry. It's time.
We've reinvented the concept of a backpack from the ground up. No more baggy cloth. Hardshell is the future. It unlocks thousands of possibilities. As you scroll through this page you will see things that no other backpack can do. This is just one of 20 epic features.
Watson’s minimalistic design will turn heads whether you’re at the office or on the train.
With Watson’s revolutionary hardshell architecture -- you don’t have to worry about dropping your bag, your devices will always be protected.
Watson’s hard on the outside, but soft on the inside. A plush lining protects your favorite devices from any scratches and minimizes movement. It also acts as a soft, warm onesie on colder days that your gear will appreciate.
Ballistic nylon, Italian leather, military hardware -- all hand selected to make a backpack worthy of modern professionals.
For the few zippers Watson does have, they are the highest quality in the world - Riri. They glide effortlessly, are water resistant, and made to last.
We know what you're thinking. One-touch access for everyone? Watson is locked and loaded with a discreet slider that locks access buttons shut.
Until electronics start to run on water, Watson will keep liquids on the outside (i.e rain, water bottle leaks) and your electronics on the inside. The vinyl bottom means no stains, leaks, or damage when put on a wet floor.
Hardshell architecture ensures that Watson will always look as stunning as it did on day one.
The premium version of Watson comes with your initials embossed in the label. Making it uniquely yours. Select reward tier - Monogram Watson.
Completely reimagined and built from the ground up, Watson is the first and only backpack to give you access to all of your belongings with one single touch. The revolutionary push-to-open hardshell means no more fiddling with unnecessary zippers.
Item compartments strategically designed around your daily routine.
Watson’s push-to-open hardshell gives you easy access to all of your belongings. Never fight with zippers again. All of your work items are housed in Watson’s main cavity. You can see and access everything in one place.
Keep small items like sunglasses and earbuds protected and accessible from the outside. No more tangled wires or scratched lenses. This is how Watson handles your equipment.
Store small items and necessities. From your vitamins to the USB that stores your super important presentation, there’s now a place for them.
Watson’s dedicated quick-draw pocket keeps your essentials at your fingertips. Check a text message, pay for a coffee -- all without having to take off your backpack.
Whether you’re running from meeting to meeting, or to catch a train, there’s a dedicated pocket to quick-draw your essentials exactly when you need them.
Combining function and form flawlessly, Watson's bottle holder expands to keep you hydrated and disappears when not in use.
When you’re on an important call, you won’t have to panic at the prompt of the low battery message. Watson has a dedicated compartment for your favorite battery inside.
The integrated cord system lets you connect your external battery inside the main cavity, to an easily accessible back pocket - letting you power up without removing your bag. When not charging, this pocket is perfect for your passport or other valuables. Battery and cable not included.
You no longer have to peel your bag off the floor, Watson stands proudly by your side -- giving you easy access to your belongings throughout the day.
Inspired by camping packs, Watson's suspension system spreads weight across the entire back panel, ensuring all day comfort.
The backpack is the most ergonomic way to carry your belongings while improving your posture. Now, you won’t have to compromise form for function.
A suspended mesh ventilation system creates space between your back and the bag, maximizing airflow.
There was no spared expense to give you the most beautifully designed backpack that will turn heads for years to come - whether you’re walking through the streets of San Francisco or walking into the most important meeting of your life.

We tried them all. Literally.
In September of 2015, I had hoped to find the perfect backpack for my partner. Despite working at Suits and knowing the retail market inside out - nothing I found met my quality bar, not even the most expensive luxury bags. So I decided to build the ultimate backpack for today's urban professional. But first, I needed data.
This meant buying and test driving dozens of today’s top-performing backpacks. We set up shop with a lot of coffee and watched hundreds of people use their backpacks. We watched from the offices of silicon valley startups to a community coffee shop in New York -- witnessing every fight they had with their backpacks and learning what they needed from an everyday carry. It took thousands of hours and way too much coffee, but eventually we had enough data to start prototyping.
From the first napkin sketches, to canvas samples, foam board mock-ups, 3D modelling, pattern making, fabric and mechanics testing - we left no stone unturned.
As a 3rd generation entrepreneur, building quality products is in my blood. The appetite for inventing things to solve common problems came early and, thanks to my hands-on dad helping to bring my visions to life, I felt anything was possible. After completing my BA of Design, I immersed myself in the film industry (Suits, Nikita). Here, I gained access to exceptional mentors, Emmy Award Winning designers, and directors. My work attracted private clients as well, namely in athletic apparel, where my unique design aesthetic of combining form and function struck a cord. All this experience built the foundation for Watson.
What began as a thoughtful gift for my partner, Nikolai Bratkovski, quickly transformed into the groundwork for Watson. An uncompromising professional himself, Nikolai’s first-principles thinking was pivotal in reimagining what a professional backpack could and should deliver to the user. We believe in offering the highest quality product at the best price. It only makes sense that something you carry every day - that holds your most prized possessions - should be the best. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Braun, Dyson, and Apple - Watson aims to over-deliver on design, usability, and comfort in ways as-yet untouched in the everyday carrying space. Never again do you have to compromise form for function or vice versa -- you deserve to have both.

Risks and challenges
Our team is comprised of seasoned entrepreneurs, designers, engineers, and manufacturing partners with decades of entrepreneurial and manufacturing experience, so rest assured Watson will exceed your expectations.
What you are seeing are prototypes, so expect the final product to be more polished and of supreme quality. In particular, we are developing the best version of the hard-shell/ballistic nylon fusing process.
While we have been relentlessly concerned with the details throughout designing, prototyping, and planning for production, there is always the chance that things won't go as planned.
In the event that things don't go as planned, whether it's a delay in the manufacturing timeline, shipping date, or something else, we promise to communicate honestly with you and work around the clock until we correct the issue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There is a slide-to-lock feature on the side of the buttons which allows you to lock them.
We considered a numbered lock for Watson. But after testing a few prototypes, our users found it more troublesome to scroll through the numbers than it was worth and ended up leaving them unlocked most of the time. It didn't make sense for a bag that you'll be opening and closing at least twice a day. And it's important for that process to be quick and easy. So, the slider lock gave us the best of both worlds.
If we were to make a travel edition of Watson, then yes, a combination lock would be necessary. No plans to make that version as of now.
We had hoped to include a luggage pass-through (to slide over the handle of a rolling suitcase) in this product. However, we have not yet found a way to do that without sacrificing the daily comfort and silhouette of the bag. As the airport is not the primary use case for this backpack, we will always prioritize the everyday carrying experience. We're still looking at ways that this feature might be included. But as of right now, it will not be a part of Watson.
