A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
About this project
The birth of an idea -
Wallet, a pen, a knife and my phone. 4 things I never leave the house without but I have never been thoroughly pleased with the design or interface of any of the items readily available. I began solving this dilemma by redesigning or modifying each, one by one.
Second, was the knife. (originally designed by James. I took the project over, tweaked it bit and went to production).
Third, is the pen, which brings us here!
One day while assembling a batch of uFlick knives for shipment, my Smith and Wesson pen that I carried was laying next to one of the uFlick knife blades and it struck me that these two items need to be combined into a sleek package and thus the Utility Pen project began!
More than just the perfect pen.
The Utility Pen also includes a replaceable blade knife to truly make it the best in EDC gear. Machined from solid 6061 aluminum and then anodized in 1 of our 7 vibrant colors, the Utility Pen is sure to stand out. The included Parker Gel Medium point refill is a pleasure to write with and easily replaceable. The Utility Pen accepts all Parker style refills as well as Fisher Space Pen refills, all available at your local office supply, on Amazon or directly through Wastük Supply Company.
The opposite end is what sets the Wastük Utility Pen apart from the rest. Included is a #11 utility X-acto style utility blade making your pen a very useful tool for hobbyists, shipping clerks, craft workers, makers and artisans. The list could go on forever!
Any of the 1/4" shank blades will fit our holder but the blade must be under 1 7/8" for the cap to fit.
The Utility Pen is 6" long, 1/2" diameter. Caps are 2" and interchangeable from end to end. Weight is just 1.4 ounces. After machining, we tumble the components in ceramic media, clean, and anodize in one of the 7 available colors shown below. Additionally, We are offering these in fully machined brass and copper.
Why Kickstarter -
We've chosen Kickstarter as our initial sales offering outlet so that we can raise enough funds to purchase the raw materials and pay for anodizing costs. Additionally, we are hoping to raise enough funds to allow us to build a substantial inventory so that we may continue to offer the Utility Pen once the campaign has ended.
Risks and challenges
This is my 4th Kickstarter project so I have a good sense of what I am up against. This project I am going to allow more time for delivery. My past three projects I have been a few weeks late and I just hate that feeling of not being on time. I've set September as a delivery date with hope to begin shipping much earlier. I have already purchased the CNC lathe I needed to make this project happen so I am ready to begin work just as soon as we hit our goal. Aside from that, I anticipate this project going smoothly.
