## What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

#### Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

#### Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

#### Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

#### Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

#### Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

#### Prototype Gallery

These photos and videos provide a detailed look at this project’s development.

# Introducing Honeycomb Hives Integrative Beekeeping System Because your Honey Bees deserve HEALTHIER Environments!

1) HEALTHIER - because Honeycomb Hives are more thermally efficient than rectangular hives. Standard Honeycomb Hives = 700 cubic inches of space and hold 15 frames. Each frame has an area of 65 sq in x 2 sides for total comb space of 1,949 sq in, equating to 0.3591 ratio to box space. By comparison, a Langstroth Medium box = 2466 cubic of inches with 10 frames @ 17 x 6" = 136 sq in x 2 side for total comb area of 2040 sq in, a  ,8272 ratio to box space. Honeycomb Hives are more than TWICE efficient than comparable rectangular hives which means the bees don't have to work nearly as hard to keep their cluster warm

2) HEALTHIER - because Honeycomb Hive angle roof eliminates condensation problems. In cold weather, flat-top hives with rectangular frames are a disaster waiting to happen. The problem is NOT ventilation, moisture or humidity. The real problem is condensation. A bee cluster of 94 degrees F means warm, moist air rising to condense against cold flat tops to then drip on bees, which they cannot survive during cold spells. Honeycomb Hives peaked roof design means any condensation runs down the roof panels and side walls resulting in NO water dripping on bees means they are more likely to survive cold winters

3) HEALTHIER - because Honeycomb Hives are carefully engineered with precise construction details. Less crevices, corners and cracks means fewer places for pests to hide. Tighter construction, with T&G joints and roofs means the ONLY way pests such as wax moths, small hive beetles, ants, earwigs, etc., gain entry into Honeycomb Hives is thru heavily guarded small entrances. Tighter Boxes mean Calmer Bees and Happier Beekeepers

Honeycomb Hives is pleased to share this amazing new Integrative Beekeeping System featuring universally-sized Smart Frames, our exclusive comb honey harvesting system, practical accessories and logical options exchangeable among most Honeycomb Hive types

Honeycomb Hive’s secret sauce and primary differentiation, other than unique design, is our Smart-Frames System. This is what makes these bee hives so remarkable and integrative. Crafted to allow precise bee space all around, above and below, Smart-Frames allow easier bee movement, reduce propolizing and improve air circulation.

The Honeycomb Smart-Frames System includes frame types that accept wax or plastic foundation, comb honey cups, queen-excluders, frames for natural comb and follower boards. Together with divider boards, these hive tools comprise our Smart-Frame System and are exchangeable among Honeycomb Hive types.

Our Smart-Frames for foundation are also easier and quicker to work with at the bench. When installing foundation, the two halves fit together to "sandwich" the foundation between them, so it is fully supported all the way around and no tedious wiring work is necessary.

Logical options allow beekeepers ultimate flexibility in choosing which hive and frame types best suit their preferences. For example, any type of foundations are readily accepted or natural beekeepers can opt for our natural comb frames. Feeding options include in-hive divider feeders or 2 quart Cupola feeders or patty boards. Other logical options include observation panes, screen bottoms, pull-out debris trays and pollen traps.

Aptly shaped like an old-time school house, Honeycomb Starter Hives are just right for beginners to get a start in beekeeping, gain insights and grow with direct hands-on experience. Honeycomb Hives is the most versatile, integrative beehive system on earth with exchangeable Smart-Frames™ and our exclusive & Comb Honey Cups™ Harvesting System. Included:

•  6x Honeycomb Smart-Frames™ (for Natural Comb building)
•  5x Honeycomb Smart-Frames™ (for Wax or Plastic Foundation)
•  4x Comb Honey Cups™ System (each Frame holds 7 CH Cups)

In a word, Honeycomb Flex-Hives are all about “versatility”. Sized right to start a package or accept a spring Nuc-Box, Standard Flex-Hives provide everything one needs to house small honey bee colonies. Flex-Hives offer straightforward management techniques that produce sweet results, making them a preferred choice for beginners even though these hives offer features appreciated by seasoned beekeepers.

Honeycomb Flex-Hives enable beekeepers to derive insights and grow from direct hands-on experience with a versatile integrative beekeeping system. With three entrances that can be selectively dialed open or partially or fully closed, Flex-Hives can be run wide-open or can be easily divided into three separate sections using two divider boards, with each resulting chambers that hold four or five Smart Frames (depends on spacing). This allows for a logical setup for overwintering two or three colonies in tight quarters with a shared “virtual” cluster pattern, enhancing their chances for survival. (They still need beekeepers help moving them to larger quarters with precise timing in the spring!)

When it comes to bee hives, there has been a definite trend over the past couple of decades towards larger frame hives often referred to as “deeps”. Another evolving trend is “long” Horizontal Hives, which also tout less lifting and flexibility of hive management.

Honeycomb Long-Hives enable beekeepers to maximize efficiency with significantly increased hive space for raising larger, more productive honey bee colonies. They also offer even more flexibility than Flex-Hives, such as adequate room to occasionally accept Langstroth frames (with special follower boards)

Fold-Hives are not only beautiful to behold, they offer unique, practical advantages for housing one or more healthy colony of honey bees. First advantage is Fold-Hives easily open for full-hive access meaning quicker hive inspections with less bee disturbance.  Secondly, the hinging action of Fold-Hives means beekeepers are lifting only about half the weight, which is much appreciated by seasoned beekeepers and beginners alike. Third is no tall stacks of hive boxes. Next, easily removed inner covers (waffle and baffle boards) mean that each hive box is opened only as needed, which keeps the bees calmer. These covers also provide insulation and isolation between adjacent hive boxes but allow bees to easily navigate between boxes via bee ways and through channels.

Fold-Hives use central entrance hallways to efficiently route all bee traffic to appropriate destinations like exit ramps on a highway. Another cool advantage is our built-in pollen trap with removable tray that makes harvesting this important protein source for winter feeding an easy routine. Other options include attic feeders, observation windows, detritus trays and our exclusive comb honey harvesting system.

Nucleus Hives aka “Nuc-Boxes” or "Nucs" can serve as amazing little workhorses in an active apiary. Typically holding five frames, they’re perfect for building up or transporting small colonies, catching swarms, raising queens, or overwintering a modest colony. The versatility of Nuc- Boxes cannot be over-emphasized!

If you are an experienced beekeeper, imagine a harvesting system that makes you three times more money per ounce than your liquid honey, with a product that only requires a label:

Our Smart Combhoney Harvesting System means far less work for beekeepers, requiring no uncapping, no centrifugal extracting, no homogenizing, no filtering, no pumping, no mess, no blending and no bottling honey.

Beginning Beekeepers benefit by keeping money in their pocket from the get-go. With this practical system, new beeks can forego buying an uncapping knife, a pricey extractor, honey filters, wax processing, or bottles or jars. Instead they put nice labels with their apiary information on smart-sized cups of pure, raw comb honey and presto: They have their own branded, pure, healthy, raw product to share with their world.

Honeycomb Hives is focused and committed to find or innovate ways to improve honey bee environs so the bees can live full healthy lives, making for happier beekeepers who will then likely raise even more honey bees. We think it's time for serious rethinking and reimagining of beekeeping systems with bee-centric health concerns and successfully overwintering colonies as top priorities.

"The world desperately needs informed, well-equipped beekeepers to take up the enjoyable practice of responsible husbandry of honey bees" Doug Lambrecht

1)  Use Follower Boards to right-size hive space as the colony grows. Honey Bees love tight spaces and tighter hives are easier for them to defend.  With a front entrance like Nucs or Starter Hive, a great practice is to use a Follower Board right against the front entrance before inserting comb frames.  This creates a vestibule of sorts where bees can gather and also can defend their entrance.

2)  Don't give your bees too many frames or too much space. Rather, a good practice is to let them grow into their hive space gradually. When installing a new package or nuc, give them only four or five frames to start, backed by a Follower Board. Your queen will be happier with this arrangement and as she fills the combs with brood you can easily monitor progress and move the follower board to add a couple more frames as the girls build them out.  When you see the first full honey frame, you can pull the Follower Board as the queen will rarely venture past that first frame of honey in Honeycomb Horizontal Hives

### Risks and challenges

Of course all new ventures face challenges, but serial entrepreneurs learn that mitigating risks is all about solid strategies and preparation. Numerous previous startups have helped us learn that success is dependent upon careful advance planning and follow-through. Our production strategy centers on solid product engineering and precise design details and is strengthened by harmonious relations with the factory team that will produce our hive parts. We've already made arrangements for materials on site and preparations for manufacturing have been under way for two years. Similarly, despite being months out, detailed plans for packaging, labeling and fulfillment are already well underway.

One of the biggest risks any new company faces is not being prepared to scale operations to meet potentially robust demand. In this case we are confident that our planning, supply chain and manufacturer's capability and commitment to scale with us will help us meet whatever level of market demand we are fortunate enough to tap into.

Frankly, we could have launched sooner but Doug has remained stubbornly committed to making sure a well-researched, carefully designed, high-quality product line will be ready to ship on a timely basis.

Unlike too many crowdfunding launches which take years to fulfill their promised rewards, we've taken extra steps before launching to ensure that we're well prepared to fulfill your well-deserved rewards within months, not years, following the close of this Kickstarter campaign. Our goal and intention is to fulfill pre-orders and perks before year end 2018, so our Backers and Beeks can prepare their new hives for their spring bee installs.
