This Kickstarter campaign is to get the first collected trade of the independent comic series THE LESS THAN HISTORICAL ADVENTURES OF LI'L LINCOLN into print. This trade compiles issues #1-3 telling the first major story featuring main characters, Abe Lincoln & his mutt Fido along with guest stars, Paul Bunyan, Babe the Ox, Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie in an adventure like none other! The trade is a planned 84 pages including the 3-page lost scene from Li'l Lincoln #3! (The scene was draw but cut to meet our single issue page count.)
I am the writer/creator of The Less Than Historical Comic Universe with Paul Johnson covering artistic duties on the book. Paul and I have been working together going on four years now and have become an inseparable team creating 2 web comics; 1 mini-comic; 2 ashcan comics; 4 full size comics thus far with many more on the way! Not to mention the many comics we have produced with other collaborators as well. ;)
Should it be noted, not all donations go straight to the production of the book. It takes a lot of time and money to fulfill rewards ordered and manage correspondence. These costs have been accounted for and added to the goal amount. Below is a brief run-down of what your actual donations will pay for.
*Production Costs - Paul Johnson and I (Benny Jack K.) are the entire creative team for the book (though our first issue's cover was drawn by the Incomparable Scott Shaw!). While Paul tirelessly worked on the art -penciling, inking & coloring- I've handled the rest -scripts, title design, lettering, print layout, promotional, publishing, etc.- with one exception (Shaw!), none have received pay for our work on the comic and this Kickstarter campaign does NOT include pay for either of us in the goal. Paul and I do this book for the love of comics and our reward is having our book enjoyed and our characters loved by others. (Not to say we wouldn't like to get paid, we just find it inappropriate to ask for donors to pay us for the work we've already done, plus we get to sell the book you all helped us get to print.)
*Production of the Books - I've used a quote from the printers for 500 copies of the paperback 84-page book and that is the base point for our goal.
*Kickstarter/Amazon Fees - Roughly 8%-10% of the final funding.
*Shipping & Shipping Supplies - This was much more difficult to account for as it largely depends on the rewards we will have to ship and where too. We've done our best to estimate the costs but no worries, we will get your reward too you. :)
*Buffer Amount - It has been suggested in other Kickstater campaigns to include a buffer to cover the unexpected, such as: dropped pledges, lost books, refund requests, and any other errors or miscalculations. So, I too have included it in the goal.
*Over Goal - Should we be fortunate enough to receive monies over our goal, we will use the extra to fund future issues of "Li'l Lincoln" as well as put it toward the selling and marketing of the comic; i.e. comic conventions and such.
Unlike other online ordering experiences, with this Kickstarter campaign, you are not only purchasing a product for you enjoyment but, you are also joining us in this wonderful collaborative journey! You can follow along in this adventure through all the tears and joys or bumps in the road. Then finally receiving the finished book in your hand, you'll share in a feeling of accomplishment which your donation has helped achieve! Here on Kickstarter, you've purchased more than a piece of art or a comic book, you've contributed to a piece of history; you've lent your support to dreams, ideas and given a gift like none other! :D
Here's how you may be part of history!
*Step 1. Create a Kickstarter account and determine your method of payment.
*Step 2. Choose your Reward or make a simple donation (take note of any shipping estimates).
*Step 3. Watch the "clock" count down to February 12th, and see what happens! When our campaign ends with success your donation pledge will be charged and your reward will be secured! (if the campaign ends without reaching our goal then you will NOT be charged.)
*Step 4. (Optional) If you'd really like to see this project succeed, then the most helpful thing you could do is help spread the word! Tweet, Facebook posts, Blog about us, share it on Pinterest or even MySpace and other social networks. ;) Do whatever you want to do to help, you will have our eternal gratitude!
We have the target of early May 2013 for delivery of most rewards. Please check your chosen reward for an approximate delivery date. Though the book is near complete we expect a month or two to pass before any prizes Paul Johnson delivers to reach the States (as he and his art live in the U.K.)
TYPES OF REWARDS
*The Less Than Historical Adventures of Li'l Lincoln - Vol. 1: This paperback 84-page, full color trade collects Issues #1-3 of the ongoing series by Warrior Innkeeper Comics. This trade includes additional material never before seen in digital format or print. The story follows a young Abraham Lincoln and his mutt of no discernible heritage, Fido. His father remarries after the death of Abe's mother. Finding this upsetting the young boy decides to run away from home and enters a less than historical adventure will with characters from American Folklore. In this collection, young Abe & Fido run into a few legends you may be familiar with, Babe the Ox; Paul Bunyan; Davey Crockett & Jim Bowie… but not everything is as you remember! As the title suggests, we have taken a few liberties with history and folklore to deliver a new Tall Tale sure to inspire readers young and not so young. ;)
*3 Brothers Frog Reward: You must message us here on Kickstarter with your prize pick of either Pud, Zip or Tad.
*Li'l Lincoln's Less Than Historical Sketchbook: A planned 48-page sketchbook featuring "behind-the-scenes" commentary by yours truly with early sketches of characters, full penciled page comparisons of the web comic version vs. the final print version of Issue #1, more pencil work by Paul Johnson, original sketches by Benny Jack K., The Fantastic Funnyman Fred Hembeck and other great artist from the Less Than Historical Universe!
*Signed/Sketch/Lithograph Copies: These may require longer processing time as some material will have to cross the Atlantic Ocean more than once.
*Cameo Reward: This reward will require a photo and "release-of-likeness" form signed.
*Penciled Page Reward: The page will be a standard 11" x 17" page of penciled art by Paul Johnson from the pages of "The… Li'l Lincoln" comic series. These pages will be the chosen by Paul (though if you have a requested section of the story please let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate your request.) HERE is a sample of the penciled page you may receive:
