24 Hours to go! R’lyeh Rising – Why WARPO Loves Lovecraft and You Should Too

Posted by Warpo (Creator)

Say what you want about the man himself, but chances are if you’re reading this, you find something interesting and cool about the creations of H.P. Lovecraft you’re not afraid to embrace. Even if you haven’t read s single Lovecraft story, if you’re fan of popular culture, you’ve undoubtedly seen, heard, and read ideas that owe a creative debt to him. Today, his influences are so ingrained into the collective consciousness they are often simply taken for granted.

While we’ll leave the discussion of Lovecraft’s influence on specific works to scholars much better informed than we are, creating the Legends of Cthulhu toy line has only heightened our awareness of Lovecraftian elements in media and culture. Who remembers the 1980’s animated G.I. JOE episode where Destro goes to his ancestral castle raise a great tentacled evil from the depths? How about the time the Real Ghostbusters fought “Cathulhu” using tactics found in Weird Tales comics? And did anyone happen to notice how much Abe Sapien from Hellboy resembles like a Deep One?

Lovecraft is everywhere…and nowhere. It astounds us that it has taken so long to see any mass market 100% Lovecraft based toy line. Perhaps this is a product of his ahead-of-his-time “open source” way of thinking, encouraging others to explore the elements and worlds he created and seeking nothing in return. Or perhaps our culture just needed to mature enough to publically embrace “genre fiction” and its often nihilistic themes. Yes, we know it seems a little crazy to make a line of toys based on his mythos, but the more we thought about it, the more we realized how perfectly suited and deserving it was.

In any case, WARPO loves Lovecraft for all of his influences on the things we loved growing up in the 70’s and 80’s and even today. Our first toy line; Legends of Cthulhu is our little part to help recognize his contributions to our culture. With less than 24 hours left in our Kickstarter, we want to thank you for helping us make it happen.

Thanks for staying awesome!

P.S. – Cthulhu wanted me to mention that while he really appreciates your dedication, if you do not spread the Kickstarter link on all your social media and to all your friends via email; you will not be on the guest list for his kegger at R’lyeh.
