About this project
Update #1 - The funding goal has been reached. Here are the first stretch goals available!
I'm starting this Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to release a romantic-comedy battle-visual novel titled My Little Dictator. The game is intended to contain many hours worth of gameplay, anime-style artwork, fun music that's a mixture of styles, and an interesting and unique storyline. I feel this project has the makings of all these things. Funding will help achieve it, with the hiring of professional artists, coding and expanded scripts and storylines. The main bulk of the script is already finished and some parts are programmed. The screenshots currently use stand-in sprites since one of the main reasons for this KS is to raise the money for the artwork. An prolific artist that worked on Katawa Shoujo is interested in doing the art for the game. The images used here are examples of the process and concepts which have been used in early development. To that end, please don't be too surprised if the artwork changes. More examples will be posted soon with the art style this project will be using.
1939. Europa is on the brink of war. Several factions are set to conquer and take control of the continent. Britannia led by Churchill, Franzo led by Cyrano, Sovia led by Starin and a surrounded Germania led by Hitora. Only one man can set Europa on a guided path to domination. Take control as Yamato, a young and quick-witted General in the Japanese Army, who is traded to Germania to become Hitora’s tactician. Fight in battles, fall in love and change history forever.
Set in an alternate universe where countries are run by teenage girls, Hitora is the dictator of Germania. Stubborn yet daring, it is her dream to conquer Europa and unite the continent under one banner. Her arch-nemesis Starin, a little girl with a height-complex, is out to stop you at all costs. Cyrano is a sly and sneaky girl, Churchill is a tired and intelligent one. Together with Starin, the three of them will form an alliance to try and take down Germania. You'll fight their underlings, Zhukov, Monty and Roi Jean along the way, and receive help from your friends, Rinni and Rommel. Play in RPG Battles and Map Conquests, whilst also trying to win the heart of the girl you desire. Watch as she slowly falls deeper and deeper in love, and unlock all her CGs. Go shopping, to the beach, on dates and into the midst of the battlefield. A romantic comedy set in a fictional version of WW2!
Yamato - A Japanese teenager, he worked his way up from Footsoldier to General after fierce fighting in China. Following hospitalization after battle, he is called to Germania to become tactician to the dictator Hitora and help her realize her dream.
Hitora - The leader of Germania. Once an artist, now forced into politics. She is sometimes an arrogant girl, often sweet and sour, but her cuteness shines through. Her dream is to unite all of Europa under one banner, to prevent any countries being divided up over treaties. Based loosely on Adolf Hitler.
Starin - The leader of Sovia and Hitora’s sworn enemy. A mysterious character with a height complex. Hitora describes her as a tyrant and a bully, and that despite her sweet looks, she is not to be trusted. Based loosely on Joseph Stalin.
Cyrano - The leader of the Franzo people. Once a commandant, she has won the hearts of the people and worked her way up to lead. Mostly interested in internal affairs, but a fierce fighter if confronted. Can be very sneaky and is known to lie. Based loosely on Charles de Gaulle.
Churchill - The leader of Britannia. A sleepy looking girl, she is a worthy adversary and perhaps the one Hitora respects most. Intelligent, a bookworm, and always overworking herself. She commands a mighty navy and the island nation is a fortress. Hitora nicknames her Chinchilla. Based loosely on Winston Churchill.
Rinni - The leader of the Italia people. Rather boisterous and happy-go-lucky, although very clumsy. A useful ally to the Axis at times, and a good friend to Hitora. Based loosely on Mussolini.
Zhukov - Starin’s second-in-command, a fierce warrior. Based loosely on Georgy Zhukov.
Montgomery - Churchill’s second-in-command, a clever tactician. Based loosely on Bernard Law Montgomery.
Roi Jean - Cyrano’s second-in-command, a brutal leader. Based loosely on Jean de Lattre.
Rommel - Hitora's former tactician who has gone missing in the desert. Where could such a brilliant mind have vanished to? Based loosely on Erwin Rommel.
The main creator, writer, editor and programmer for this game is DesertFox. Under different aliases and groups, he has created many other visual novels.
This game is partly influenced by a manga doujin - “Transformed into Females!! Biographies of World Dictators” published by Ikaros Publications, which features works by artists Nisieda, Takeshi and Miki Nonohara who created about 70 images of the dictators.
The game is intended to be a mixture between a traditional visual novel format and RPG battle-system with map elements. The genre is romantic-comedy/war. There are maps and strategies to consider, but the story-line is intended to be quite linear. Then again, there are possible bad ends if you’re not ‘leveled up’ enough to defeat certain enemies. Some countries are easier to take than others so there’s a recommended path to follow if you intend to win this fictional version of history.
There is one main route in this game. The object of Hitora’s route is to defeat the three European Allies; Britannia, Franzo and Sovia. Each enemy will vary in difficulty. You have allies to assist you in warding off enemies, as well as neutral territories that you can claim as a buffer zone against them. As you battle through zones, you will find yourself growing stronger. Placed in between battles and victories, is the story. Tender moments between yourself and the dictators, historical backstory, romance, comedy and hopefully a cheeky bit of fanservice.

A visual novel is an interactive story adventure with static (usually) graphics, music and transitions. It allows the reader to make decisions to influence the branching storyline and interact with characters. Visual novels heavily influenced RPGs in Japan, and have now come to the West as people realize the potential of this genre. It allows a player to better visualize and understand a text-based story whilst also including interactive elements. However, this game isn't only a visual novel - it's also partly an RPG in that it includes battle and map elements.
An RPG is a Role-Playing Game, wherein you take the role of a character in a game and play from their perspective. Famously, RPGs tend to focus on quests and fantasy-based settings, in particular, medieval-style ones. This game includes some elements usually found in an RPG such as a battle system and use of a map which is similar to table-top game Risk.
The dakimakura, T-shirt, wall-hanging and poster are still in production. Concepts for them all will be posted once the goal has been reached.
Risks and challenges
The quality and delivery of the sprite and CG artwork is dependent on funding going ahead. If this project isn't funded, the artwork will be of lesser and poorer quality. A lack of funding also means it will be difficult for coding to be built upon and the game would lose some key elements such as an expanded battle and map system. The script is already finished so this game will go ahead, but would be worse for wear without backing. Beyond this, being funded by you guys through Kickstarter would mean working with professional artists and programmers, focusing and completing this game to a deadline.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Nope. In no way can this game be considered political. It's set in a fictional universe with fictional characters. Hitora isn't Adolf Hitler, Starin isn't Joseph Stalin. The main drive of the game is for the player to have fun battling, and to see cute girls in uniform and try to woo them. There are one or two silly satirical jokes but the game tends to stay away from satire and political humour generally speaking.
