Onsen Master is a single-player hot spring customer management game coming to PC, Mac, Linux and now console, late 2020. Players must revitalize various onsens across the fantasy island of Izajima! Create ingredients to match the various customer ailments, reconnect the communities that surround the onsens and discover the supernatural world that they've long since been disconnected from.
- Short and sweet single-player story across 6 hot spring levels
- Visual novel style dialogue with a cute anime aesthetic
- Arcade mode to skip the story and dive right in
- An original soundtrack
Inspired Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away and great game titles like Overcooked and Diner Dash, Onsen Master matches a colorful fantasy world with frantic customer and hot spring management.
As Mu, players will travel to various hot springs across Izajima to manage onsens populated by unique customers and Japanese spirits, called yokai. As patrons queue within the onsen, your goal is to create ingredients that will solve a variety of ailments within the time limit.
Onsen Master consists of three main tasks: Greet the customer, Mix your ingredients and Heal their ailments!
Customers will queue at the entrance of each onsen and wait for you to guide them to a bath. Be sure to assist them quickly, as each customer has a timer and depending on your speed of service you can receive a nice chunk of change to influence your final score, but if the timer runs out they will leave the onsen!
Once you've sorted your customer, it's time to select an ingredient that matches their needs and head to the mixing station! There you will turn your ingredient into its final solution and dump it into the customer's bath to heal them.
But that's not all you'll be managing; unruly customers and Japanese spirits called "yokai" have come to the onsen as well and with them they bring unique ailments and behaviors to throw you off of your routine. Keep a keen eye for these characters and help them efficiently, or else they may cause quite the ruckus!
Onsen Master is a story about healing, set in fantasy feudal Japan. As Mu, you've been tasked with filling the shoes of your missing sensei, the great "Onsen Master". Since their disappearance, onsens across the island of Izajima as well as the harmony between its peoples has fallen into shambles. It is now up to you to restore the balance and uncover what happened to the previous master.
The towns in Onsen Master are home to a variety of people with unique moods and behaviors. While most customers are pretty easy going, others will need special attention as they might cut in line or roughhouse with other patrons!
The people of Izajima aren't the only ones interested in attending the local hot springs. Yokai (Japanese spirits) are also about and will be making their way into the various onsen. They are sure to bring with them their unique habits like licking customers, creating slippery puddle, and chasing Mu!
Onsen Master takes place on the island of Izajima. Apart from restoring your own onsen, you'll visit the islands varied locations and the inhabitants that reside within them.
Don't let the cozy simplicity of Nakatsukuni Onsen from the prototype fool you! Izajima Island's other onsens each come with a variety of unique challenges for prospective Onsen Master's to overcome! From Umiguchi's bustling restaurant patrons stumbling directly into the nearest bath to Furuki's living tree picking up and moving baths, the challenges will be sure to provide a surprising variety!

Onsen Master is a collaborative project between 5 passionate individuals that are dedicated to realizing a Ghibli-like dream. We have been supporting Onsen Master with much smaller wallets and now turn to Kickstarter in hopes to build a community interested in supporting our development and eventual launch. We also hope of launching Onsen Master to console and bringing local multiplayer, but we need your help!
Derrick Fields (@wakingoni) is the lead designer, 3D artist, and general "many job doer" on Onsen Master. He loves to create art derived from African American and Japanese media and culture. One can usually find him spending time with his family or playing a great deal of Sea of Thieves.
Tim Robinson (@lightshaper_) is the other lead designer, producer, project manager, and wearer of an indeterminate amount of development hats. Who knows what he’s actually like beneath all of those hats. He can usually be found near coffee and some say that if he strays too far from it that he will age instantly into dust.
Leo Riveron (@leolicos) leads all of programming and technology on Onsen Master. He is a Game Developer by day, cosplayer and ninja warrior by night, and loves to make music in his free time. Out in the wild, he can usually be found climbing on something he probably shouldn't.
Sarah Gavagan (@gavagan_sarah) works on character and level concepts for Onsen Master. Her work plays with nature and mythology, and draws a lot of inspiration from printmaking and the natural world. If you don't run into her making sushi part-time at her local izakaya, she's escaped yet again to volunteer on farms catching bees, picking weeds and following cats she finds on the street.
Dorrell Ettienne (@dorrellettienne) is the Composer for Onsen Master but could be better referred to as a sound wizard who creates imaginative music for media. He maintains a large interest in Japanese culture and the arts.
We love what we have created for Onsen Master so far and hope that we can go on to develop more. All of the team members have been contributing to this project part-time, with any availability made from their jobs and personal lives. Any expenses revolving this project has been paid for out of pocket, so developing a supportive community through Kickstarter would enable us to deliver a game directly to an audience that is as passionate as we are.
In short, a couple friendly devs have told us of their even friendlier audiences and we hope Onsen Master can be apart of that. Thanks!
Let's be real, completing a game on $10k is a tight budget. That is why we feel that scaling down on our first game is an honest approach to ensuring that we are not biting off more than we can chew and still be able to provide our audience with a fun experience. We have a few stretch goals, but created them in a way that we feel keeps us right on target for our release of late Q4 2020. Should we greatly exceed those goals, it is very important to us to not expand our scope any larger for our own mental health and you getting exactly the game you came for.
Risks and challenges
We fully understand that there will be more than a few bumps on the road ahead of us, especially with a small team. That said, we want to make sure that we always remain respectful and transparent with our supporters, keeping you well informed throughout our development.
There are some talented hands at work and even better ones, supporting us should we face any major hurdles. The version of Onsen Master we have now is right along with our project's overall scope and we feel very confident that we will be able to see to its completion.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
