IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Just 2 days in, we are deciding to put this project on hold. We will relaunch in early 2014, after making a couple of vital revisions. We really appreciate everyone's support and will come back freshly revised! :) See you soon.
We believe in this project SO much, and we have realized a couple of major tweaks we need to make. So, before we get too far in, we are halting temporarily to regroup.
Back to the drawing board for a few months. This is SUCH an important project, and we cannot wait to bring it to the world.
THANK YOU so much for your support! See you in February! Loulie
How does this "Kickstarter" thing work?
Kickstarter is the world's largest crowdfunding platform. The idea is "a lot of people give a little bit." Sometimes it takes a village to get a creative project off the ground!
People who want to support the project simply choose a reward that they will receive in exchange for backing our project. Backing a project on Kickstarter is risk-free, because if the project doesn't meet its goal (in our case, $125,000), nobody pays. If the project is successful, donors' credit cards will be charged when the campaign ends (Dec. 15) and everybody wins! We all take part in making a movie that helps animals, and donors get their rewards.
To support our campaign, please click "Back this Project" on the right, OR click directly on any of the rewards. You'll be routed through to Amazon. Many, many thanks! Woof!
(Please note: Backing of this project is not considered a charitable donation. We are not an established nonprofit, even though we work with many. So you will get the satisfaction of participating in something important, but you won't get to write it off.)
Why is this important?
Julie Castle of Best Friends said that this is the decade of the animals. We could not agree more. Animals have many advocates in their corner, standing up for them and spreading the message of kindness and respect. We believe this, too!
We believe our movie will play a pivotal role in helping our society reach a crucial "tipping point." This far-reaching movie will help the world become a happier place for animals, as the mainstream public will join our movement.
Our movie will attract moviegoers of all ages and backgrounds. This documentary will appeal to the masses with its adorable and hysterical footage, while educating the audience about the plight of shelter animals. Ultimately, we will empower the masses to help shelter animals.
What do we mean by "crowdsourced?"
Wag will be the end product of many minds and many imaginations. We will look to the public for footage, and our team will consist of filmmakers spread across the globe. Many bits of footage will be welded together into a kaleidescopic feast for the senses. In fact, the concepts behind Wag and Kickstarter are very similar... a LOT of people contributing a little!
(Pictures of more rewards coming soon! Please see descriptions to the right. We are still working on our collaborative "multi-species artwork" - Will post pictures as soon as it's complete!)
All rewards $25 and up are GIFTABLE! We will provide you with a digital version of a lovely gift certificate describing the particular gift you chose. Just print, personalize and gift to that special someone. We will make these available to you in time for Christmas. (Wish we could provide it in time for Hannukah, too, but no such luck this time... We'll miss it by a couple of weeks.) We'll provide the gift certificates during the campaign if success is secured and if we are allowed to do so. Otherwise, we'll make your gift certificate(s) available to you immediately following the successful close of our campaign.
How Will We Use Our Kickstarter Funds?
We will use the funds we raise here on Kickstarter toward the production of our feature-length documentary. We already have many hours of incredible footage, and we will receive many more from the public. The money we raise will allow us to produce the movie in 2014, so that we can bring Wag to the world in 2015.
If we raise more than our goal (fingers crossed!), we will use the extra money for enhanced production, festival submissions, marketing and promotion, and short companion films for YouTube. It is our hope that Wag will be the most funded animal advocacy campaign in the history of Kickstarter.
Where will this movie be produced?
Though filmmakers worldwide will participate, Wag will be based in Wilmington, Norh Carolina, otherwise known as “Wilmywood.” Our city has been a hotbed for filmmaking since the early 80s.
Some of your favorite shows and movies were likely filmed here: Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, Sleepy Hollow, Iron Man 3, Safe Haven, Sleeping with the Enemy, Blue Velvet, Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, Weekend at Bernie's, and hundreds more.In Conclusion
We are so excited to roll our momentum into this important project. From the bottom of our hearts... Thank you for your support.
Risks and challenges
Our primary challenge will be choosing which footage to use. We have dozens of hours of footage from our journey, and we will be receiving many more combined hours from the public.
In addition to choosing the most effective footage, we will also be choosing which filmmakers to bring on board as members of our team. After posting a brief description on the International Documentary Association's site and hearing immediately from many qualified individuals, we expect we will have a tough time narrowing down applicants, once news of our documentary spreads.
Other than "choices," the next most challenging area is timeline. We are confident that we will be able to complete the movie in 2014, so I think we will have a rather easy time staying on our production schedule. We plan for Wag to be out in the world in 2015.
I am determined to deliver portraits in a timely manner, so I will need to set aside nightly time for artwork. Art-making will no doubt be a meditative, calming task during the exciting phase of movie production!
We feel as if we can handle these challenges. Thank you for your trust!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
