We Are Wado, the Unisex Sneakers Brand for Gamechangers who Play Green.
When we started Wado we only had one goal in mind: to make you effortlessly shift your lifestyle towards a more sustainable one. To help make that change, we offer you fashion products that you don’t pay more for… and what’s more important, that you don’t have to compromise on design!
The sneakers we have designed are based on three simple principles: sustainability, design and fair price. We realized that the sustainable fashion products that are currently traded in the market are much more expensive than non-sustainable ones and they do not follow fashion trends.
Our first sneaker, MODELO 89, comes in 5 colors and fits both men and women.

This first collection is inspired by the 80's fashion: a retro shape and colors that are aligned with our perception of nature, using the off white colour as the basis. As a token to our reforestation activity we have added a detail of cork on the tongue, which will somehow appear in all our products.
The shoes are made out of a chromium-free leather, helping to avoid the dangerous effects of this toxic product on the shoemakers and also on the environment. This gives gives maximum quality to the shoes, something that for us is unquestionable.
The leather industry poses a serious threat to the health of those who work in tanneries. 90% of the workers in leather tanneries in Asian countries die before age 50 and suffer from Tuberculosis during their lives. This is mainly due to the Chromium, one of the most harmful existing chemical, not only for the health of the Shoemaker but also for the environment.
In an exercise of innovation and sustainability we have managed to develop leathers without chromium. We use these on the outside and inside of our shoe. Thus, your feet are in contact with a healthier material.
Currently, 90% of the world footwear is produced in Asia. Most of the times workers are squeezed as if they were machines: precarious salaries, endless days and scarce security in their factories. In Blangladesh, fashion workers earn € 28 / month, half of what they need to cover their basic needs. Children and men often live on the floor of the factory where they work. Children also work in tanneries that seriously threaten their health and it is common that during the first years they do not receive any salary.
In our case, skilled lifelong shoemakers create our shoes in sustainable workshop in Felgueiras (Portugal) where artisans truly love the work they do. We’re proud to say they maintain a high standard of ethics, paid fairly, and most importantly, treated like family. This way we are empowering local industry, reducing transport distances and what’s even more important, we are avoiding the dangerous effects of Chromium on the shoemakers and also on the environment.
It is estimated that within 100 years there will be no rainforests. The rate of deforestation equals to loss of 20 football fields every minute.
In Wado we are aware of the deforestation that our planet is suffering. That is the reason why we collaborate with the NGO We Forest. When you buy a pair of shoes, we plant two trees in the Mawphlang area, in the northeast of India. Together we can reforest the most needed areas, in addition to help local communities to provide employment, wood and food resources.
We also want to be "Green" in our production processes. That’s why we have unceasingly looked for a supplier capable of meeting our values. After many tries we spotted a very small factory in Felgueiras, Portugal, well known for its footwear production where artisans truly love the work they do. By working with this factory, we are empowering local industry, reducing transport distances and what’s even more important, as they use chromium-free processes in their footwear production, we are avoiding the dangerous effects of this toxic product on the shoemakers and also on the environment. Chromium is one of the most harmful existing chemicals.

Marta, Co-Founder of Wado, worked 3 years in strategic consulting and in a personal project of sunglasses when she finished her Business Administration degree in ESADE University. Lizzie, Co-Founder of Wado, worked in marketing and communication since she finished her degree. She worked two years in a communications agency in NYC and almost 3 years in BCN. When she left her job she went on a trip and, being there, Marta contacted her and explained her the idea she had in mind. Lizzie didn’t think twice and told her that she wanted to get involved in the project; trying to create something related to the fashion industry that could make a difference was what she wanted. Damian, Wado's Co-Founder, has always been an entrepreneur. He has created two companies; a promoter of electronic music and a virtual reality company. When Marta told him about Wado he immediately saw it as a great opportunity. This project has been our life for over a year, and honestly it has not been easy. An industry-fashion related project requires a great effort to come up with a product with an exceptional design, and different values compared to other brands. However, we believe we have achieved a great result and we are very grateful to all the people who have made it possible for us to get here.

Riesgos y desafíos
The biggest challenge we have had so far has been finding suppliers that comply with our brand values and that accept small orders. It has not been easy to find the right provider and we have gone through 3 different suppliers until we reached the right one. This has forced us to postpone the launch.
In addition, another great challenge we have had is to create a product with an exceptional design and different values compared to other brands because as you know, a project related to the fashion industry, where there is so much competition, requires a great effort to be able to create something unique.
We have spent almost a year thinking and building this project. Two of the three founders have previous experience in fashion startups and business studies and we are fully trained to carry out this project and deliver the sneakers on time.
Although sometimes there are unforeseen events in the manufacturing chains that do not depend on us, the risks are minimal since, as we have said, we have chosen with care our manufacturers, who have decades of experience in the sneakers production.Más información sobre el concepto de responsabilidad en Kickstarter
