Our planet has no targets for pioneer travelers, no true Terra nullius. Cosmic era is still a matter of time; colonization of various planets is only a dim prospect, and even a notorious warp-engine invention is yet doubtful. It seems as if human desire and eagerness to explore and expand new territories will never be satisfied. However, even nowadays, we can create artificial worlds and visualize them by means of computer technologies. For getting an access to these worlds, we use diverse displays, even a book can be considered as some sort of interface to get into a virtual world. Yet, the best choice is, no doubt - a VR headset or Head-Mounted Display (HMD).
Everyone has heard of the headset, letting you reach an incredible level of immersion either while watching a full 360 movie or gaming, but we want to point out another upside. The developed countries residents spend most of their day dealing with high-tech products, including the Internet. This trend resulted in eliminating space and time boundaries and giving us access to any information. We can swiftly drag the world to our screen via browser, but only virtual reality (VR) can teleport us into the world.
Teleportation is particularly vital and actual for the countries with a low population density or poor infrastructure. We get stuck in traffic jams or commute 2 hours a day to work by any means of transport or even waste weeks on business trips. Try to think how much time people spend only in order to transfer their body from one spot to another. The worst part is that the overwhelming majority of people still need to do this.
The key motivation for people to relocate is due to work process, which should be carried out in order to satisfy their biological needs. The other ones can be partly complied on the Internet; a bunch of apps are being used for that. So, what if these apps and a possibility to work are united in one? What if we get an opportunity to establish buildings and interiors using our personal models in a seamless 3D reality for free? And it won’t be a more complex task than fortifying a settlement in Fallout 4. What if you, as a VR developer, didn’t face a problem of compatibility, management, and distribution of your content anymore? What if you, as a user, could acquire a 3D operating system and have the possibility of spending most of your day in VR, both working and chilling out?
In our opinion, it’s high time to launch a global project of a virtual universe, which will turn into a platform for all VR and game industry groundworks as a whole. Any PC user can become a participant of the greatest social experiment of the twenty-first century, but the owners of headsets will obtain a truly amazing experience. You will face unlimited opportunities in creating, setting up events, exploring the most unbelievable worlds. Any intellectual activity becomes easier in an imaginary virtual universe, which operates on its own rules and has a total automation of routine processes. At the same time, you still have access to all files, apps, and social media.
VRLD is long-awaited VR realization. There is a trend nowadays to call such world as a metaverse, but we prefer the concept of an ecosystem for VR devices and applications, a 3D-operating system, or simply a VR platform, aimed at integrating groundworks of VR and IT industry. Users have complete freedom of action; they can create any content in the world and fill it up with basic, shared, and personal objects.
VRLD is like Windows, but it uses a totally separate method of providing data and coping with it. It is more natural, convenient, and fast. We were born in a solid 3D world but living de facto in a 2D domain system. We want to get away from any abstractions, caused by need of using a flat screen, a mouse, and a keyboard.
What can you possibly do in VRLD? The answer is simple — the same what you usually do in your real everyday life, like: studying, exploring and traveling, working, creating, comprehending, sharing emotions, making friends, and interacting with people, taking part in cultural events and parties, conducting business activity, researching.
VR technology is a life accelerator of the twenty-first century, which gives us the effect of presence, a perception of being involved in process anywhere. Nowadays VRLD allows any PC user to become a participant of a great social experiment for free, but those who possess headsets will achieve a truly amazing experience.
Back in 2010, when nobody even heard of Oculus Rift, VRLD ideological inspirer Alex started working on a virtual universe, which could become a digital reflection of the real world. This idea sprang to his mind along with the popularity growth of some open world games like Minecraft, where people were creating giant buildings and brand new worlds for years. All these efforts of people made Alex feel sorry that only friends and guests of a small server, based on the author’s computer, could enjoy this creative output. Later on, many top titles started to add a constructor — that is when such projects as Rust, Ark, and series’ of other survival games appeared. Back in those years, thanks to nexusmods.com, a number of modders increased steeply, and as the result, here is what we have: millions of people spending their whole free time, living incredible lives in open virtual worlds and creating virtual content; due to the spread of smartphones, more and more people get away to online life. Interaction, entertainment, education, practically all spheres are available via the Internet. Meanwhile, lots of people have obtained a tool to fulfill their creative needs, however, many of us still have to sustain life offline, to go to work, etc.
Alex started thinking about a virtual universe as an instrument to unite both human creative potential and work process, via interfaces and automation. We cannot live any faster. For several years he had to move around a few hours a day through constant traffic jams, and he could observe how lives of people, using his services of automatizing engineer and other systems, were changing for the better. The world desperately needs a reasonable teleportation technology for a high-quality breakthrough in speed and life standards. So it seems easier to shift the world to the place, where this teleportation is already possible. At the same time, human creativity will work for the public and civilization's good.
When it became apparent that technologies were able to make a photorealistic image and seamless transitions, he started developing the major VR console. However, Alex didn’t make more than a draft patent. In 2015, finally getting confident about the future of VR, he decided to resume work on that idea, but now, based on working devices. Alex spent one year exploring methods of gamedev, checking out possibilities of Unreal Engine 4 and programming the core and the VR Constructor. Throughout this time, two more programmers and an artist, co-founder Natalia, joined the team. During the KS project launch period, work on constructor has held up but all notes and sketches have been put in order. Now it is an elaborate system with described parameters and algorithms. A unique economic model, a security system, and a networking database have been designed specifically for VRLD.
We have no illusions that making VRLD is a matter of a few years-time. It is hard, expensive, and time consuming. This is not just a global server for MineCraft or Rust. While elaborating our project, we take into consideration the Star Citizen experience, in particular, their module system. It will help us to split budged and to produce those features, which are currently the most significant for users.
Project development is determined by business domain owners and premium users. Every time they pay, they can choose where the money will go to. Each of you can decide the future of VR. Among the rewards, you may pick one or several modules which you consider more important, so the distribution of your pledges forms our development budget.
This system will be working in the future as well. Any user, acquiring an expanded account or some cosmetic stuff may choose what his money will be used for in the nearest future. Basic needs of the project will be kept back from the total amount and the rest will be allocated, according to the users’ choice. In order to keep track of the money spent, the distribution graph will be posted on the portal monthly.
World construction requires a high level of expenses and it is connected with a complexity of following the general architecture. No world-wide company is able to establish a brand new world. But we can create a simple in use and intuitive interface-tool for everybody. Try to recall how easily Tony Stark managed to deal with stuff. So, we provide similar possibilities for both “mere mortals” and superheroes. It means you can make and place public or private objects anywhere you wish by the wave of your hand. This is even easier than to build a settlement in Fallout 4. But unlike single-user games or MMO, your contribution into creating the VR universe is priceless. Digital objects do not undergo aging or a break-down, and your fruits of labor will be appreciated by millions of users. You are constrained only by your own imagination frameworks and since we unite all community efforts, step by step, VRLD will be created!
Every user should have his private space in a shared universe, where the access is possible only for the trusted visitors. This space is your own domain, you may choose whatever household you wish to inhabit. Your home is an ideal place for private meetings, hanging out with friends, and parties. You can read your favorite blogs right on the wall of your castle or view TV series in a movie room of your own spaceship, floating over the atmosphere of the planet Pandora. What object in your living room can become the most popular and essential: an interactive app desk or an e-bookcase – it’s up to you to decide. Sounds like a 3D operating system? Oh, yeah.
Except for spare, public and private domains, there exist special places, which any user can create for himself or a group of users. Workbench is available for an expanded account and monitors: group operating time, work procedure, basic accounting. Additionally you can use any app you consider to be appropriate and needed, especially those, which interface is adapted to VR. Virtual Office is a private domain for a group of users with additional functions: file sharing, whiteboard, cloud storage, screen capture with subsequent projection to any surrounding surface, advanced voice communication (groups, audibility range adjustment, record-keeping).
How to bring life to surrounding objects, to make them move and function? Yes, it’s programming, but we make this process fun and simple. A simple script can be written even by a schoolboy and a bit more complicated script turns out to be just a number of simple ones. Our community will permanently expand the database, so you will be able to find the answer to any question and create scripts at any level of complexity, as you desire. Scripts are a good way to try your strength before generating separate modules for VRLD. They can assist you in your attempt to create, for instance, your own robot-butler meeting your guests, an animated installation in a public zone, or a hot-air balloon.
VRLD is focused on giving all indie-developers an area where they will be able to deploy their software, and there are two ways possible for making it happen. First, imagine a Tool measuring every user’s step, subsequently collecting useful data about his actions, intentions, and even subconscious motives; a giant analytic machine, assisting a surveillant in filtering not only unwanted information but, literally, the environment itself.
The second option is through popularity of Unreal Engine 4, which allows us to integrate entire levels in VRLD. There is no need now to download games in advance and start them separately; you can move to battlefields, boundless space, a fantasy forest, as if you are visiting Disneyland. If you develop apps or physical interfaces for VR, you can add them to our platform when they are issued, as long as no other place fits their successful distribution better.
If a protocol of communicating with the “Internet-of-things” is integrated into VR - the time of immersion in VR can double. The necessity in “floating up to the surface” to carry out some domestic stuff falls off. Buying or making food won’t be a problem, and a ready-to-eat meal can be delivered by a robot-assistant. An image from the assistant can be processed as AR. The automated production control is integrated in the same way.
We believe that VR technologies will result in a new industrial revolution, and not due to development in general, but thanks to the appearance of unique interfaces for carrying out technological processes. If people cut down on time they spend to drag their flash from one spot to another one, and instead of useless games in social media they will get a chance to fulfill their creative potential in scientific or industrial fields, then we believe the world will become a much better place. Even now everything tends to unite all devices under one network, and we wish to design a unified interface for it. Based on the principles of gamification, work will get more exciting and interesting for the users, because they will have a high level of motivation, responsibility, and knowledge.

• Why KS?
We have an ambitious goal and kickstarter is not only a place to start, but a way to gather reviews and check our ideas out. VRLD is a global social experiment in creating virtual space for providing comfortable life, according to the net rules. No other full VR realization project ever entered KS, especially the one, appealing to unite game industry with automation of industrial and business processes.
VRLD will always be based on community governance and target budget formation. That is where we share the principles of crowdfunding, as a whole. It does not matter if you consider it possible to accomplish such a project — the only thing that really matters is that you want it. This is what Kickstarter is based on. And that is why we decided to present our project to the world for the first time here.
• How is it possible?
We use the most high-power 3D engine, where the whole basic project infrastructure has been worked out and what is even more essential — it has a great potential of Blueprints language and access to the initial code. Even now, the community is working on expanding the content for EU4, and a lot of basic features were completed years ago. We take the best out of the most popular projects and combine it in the free online 3D world.
Our experience in developing various systems gives us a chance to look at gamedev from the other side. Having united the principles of numerous IT fields, we will create a universal tool and give a boost to the new technological breakthrough.
• Who needs this?
As an instrument to upgrade labor: Designers, engineers, programmers, freelancers, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, activists, researchers, marketers, travel agents, interface and game developers, journalists, public figures, etc.
As entertainment — all the rest. You only need a PC, and a headset is desirable as well. There are lots of people who see perspectives in VR; they are mostly fans of open worlds and new emotions. Our audience is dreamers and experimenters — people who keep up with the times, those, who buy the most ordinary fry pans only when they need them and make a potato salad by themselves without community help.
• Why VR?
VR literally transfers you to a different reality. Even if you could treat a low-polygonal character on a flat screen normally, would you want to be him? Not many want to live in this world, which is full of acid colors and soapy textures. Modern 3D graphics allow us to create landscapes of unbelievable beauty, which one cannot see in real life. So, why not to use that? The users will be able to travel and to search for unique corners of this new world.
Simply because it is convenient. The experts consider the optimum input interface to be a pair of joystick-gloves, which will allow the user to interact quickly both with widgets and 3D objects.
Is the Matrix time approaching? Nowadays, we have more than a dozen of various headsets and a numerous number of mobile cases, but high-quality content for them is still missing.
For example, what are millions of programmers dealing with nowadays? They are programming interfaces for working with abstract data, simply because there is no platform to work with real objects yet. They are hard to cover and it is even more complicated to control them. Epic Games offers a great variation of a visual programming language, which can be used in VR. By the way, there are also firmware programmers — they work with live objects. The system emulation to VR eliminates numerous oblems for them.
• How valuable are the rewards for me?
When bitcoin first appeared it was worth less than a dollar but now its exchange rate equals 900 dollars. The central areas of VRLD are limited in the same way as the number of bitcoins – the further from public domains you are, the smaller reward you get for the object construction.
So the earlier you get your domains, the closer to the world’s center and high flow of people you will be.
• Why do I need virtual world? I work all day long and want to do nothing except shooters in the evening!
Don't you wonder why it is happening? Why do you have to spend most part of your life in order to support it? Why instead of self-development, creativity, and social activity we have to work? Maybe that is because this process is extremely outdated and should be optimized. To get rid of time spent on transportation, to shift routine tasks to automatic algorithms and to do something really useful which would directly influence your income and make you satisfied. That is what our mission is about. To create this system of the future.
Risks and challenges
Software developers take a risk while choosing a certain platform or a device. But since we have been elaborating VRLD for Desktop Windows and are using the most popular and honored Unreal Engine 4 – our risks are minimum. We are not attached to any specific HMD brand or any input interface. Our platform is exactly the universal product to unite IT groundworks.
We can face restrictive measures of several states, but… We are creating a brand new world with its own economic model, without centralized management or a central server, which could be turned off. Our inner rules will generally follow the civilized laws; the security system will suppress illegal actions.
