VRGO is the most intuitive and consumer friendly hands free movement controller for virtual reality. It combines simple responsive control with flawless design enabling you to unlock deeper levels of immersion by bringing you closer to reality whilst in VR.

It's no secret that one of the biggest issues currently facing the VR industry is that of movement within the Virtual world.

CTO Oculus VR - John Carmack "Stick yaw control is such VR poison -- swivel chair/stand or don't play"

President of Sony - Shuhei Yoshida "The biggest design challenge for me as a gamer and the future of VR is how to solve the right analogue stick issue"

Moving away from stick yaw control, w,a,s,d, and mouse inputs and towards hands free alternatives, we can unlock new experiences that allow for deeper levels of presence.

Sadly past efforts to provide a device that reaches these high standards have proven to be clunky, unresponsive, expensive and simply not practical for the average home.

Until now.

The VRGO can connect wirelessly to both PC/MAC and cell phone HMD headsets via Bluetooth, it's low latency and universal adoption ensures the most responsive hands free experience.

It can connect at the touch of a button as both keyboard and mouse or joypad input. This means it will work on all platforms and on any game that have either of these input options.

The feeling of complete presence in VR is the ultimate goal. Being able to move freely and bring your hands into the virtual world are the key component to this. The VRGO allows for hands free movement enabling the use of other devices such as the leap motion.

VRGO has been designed to complement the natural locomotion of your body. During movement, the human body naturally inclines towards the direction it’s travelling. VRGO’s tilt-to-move system correlates to these natural movements. To move within the virtual world, you simply lean in the desired direction of travel. This allows for a full and organic range of movement and rotation in any direction.

Through lots of testing we have found the perfect sensitively for activating motion through tilt. A gentle tilt of the chair forward or backward will start motion and a tilt to the left or right will act as a strafe.

When using joypad control, the VRGO works with analog range (the more you tilt the faster you go) while keyboard can only accommodate walk and sprint. The VRGO will emulate both of these inputs.

The default yaw motion is set greater than 1:1 so that a small movement on the chair will act as a larger movement in VR. This limits the chance of potential HMD wires becoming tangled and minimizes the effort required to rotate. However, this sensitivity can be changed within input device game setting options to suit your needs.

The VRGO's ergonomic design has been engineered for strength, control and comfort. It's built from aircraft grade materials, has a high quality finish that fits any environment and benefits from the same posture enhancing effects as an exercise ball, perfect for those long gaming sessions.

The VRGO's design was inspired by a weeble toy. It's weighted at the bottom that keeps the centre of gravity low for extra stability.

Very few people have the room for a large locomotion device in their dedicated VR space. The VRGO is smaller than an office chair and light enough to be easily moved around your home, or even taken outside. You can also open up the device and use it as storage for your HMD, plugs, adaptors, headphones etc.

Such a complex device has required a team of individuals with expert knowledge in advanced composite manufacturing, software engineering and product design. The core team work out of Bristol's Pervasive Media Studio and are interested in new forms of immersive experience.

Kaspar has a awesome track record of building consumer devices. He is an electronic design engineer and software developer and has worked on projects ranging from musical instruments, to robots, to Braille displays. His primary professional interest is in making technology more accessible, less scary and more fun.

Joe is a creative technologist and has worked on a number of video games, mobile apps and live street games that use cell phone technology. After working within the video game industry for 7 years he began exploring IOT and novel human to computer interfaces and the concept of the VRGO was born.

The original idea for the VRGO came from a concept of a chair Joe made that always self righted and that promoted good posture. The initial design was built out of wood and the concept worked really well.

The next step was to combine Joe’s knowledge of mobile game design with an Accelerometer, Gyroscope and Magnometer to get the chair working as a motion controller within Unity. We realised early on that we wanted the chair to have its own internal electronics and started to prototype with a number of off the shelf solutions.

Soon after we decided that the most cost effective way to produce the VRGO would be to create moulds for a fibreglass chair. Fiberglass benefits from the perfect weight to strength balance and could be built relatively quickly.

With expert assistance from a local university, we used vacuum infusion which enabled us to create a very light but exceptionally strong shell with a delightful shine! We also started to shape the chair so that it would be more comfortable and designed a seating pad for comfort and control.

We have sold a number of VRGO chairs to developers around the world and the reception has been fantastic. Now we’re opening up to the Kickstarter community to help us bridge the final gap in VRGO’s development.

As previously mentioned the VRGO currently uses off the shelf internal components. For the VRGO to be manufactured and delivered to you we need the funds to design and manufacture our own sensor module.

Risks and challenges

Making any hardware is a difficult process. Much of the risk of the chair has been removed as we are already building the chair from a mould. It is a time consuming process however and our team will have to work hard to get them out the door to meet the deadline. There is still development to be done on transmitting the data from the chair to the PC and this will us some time. With our background of building tools within game environments however we are confident we will hit our targets.
