Robert Franks’ wife was brutally murdered in the middle of the day at a neighborhood supermarket. She cried out for help in vain as onlookers stood frozen in terror and timidity, unwilling to intervene. Since then, Franks' obsession over the dearth of altruism has driven him to “hero searching” out of desperation.
Franks enacts a diabolical plan to find her missing saviors, individuals who he feels exhibit the promise of heroic spirit. He systematically challenges his candidates with a simple choice: risk your life through a gauntlet of nearly impossible obstacles in order to save another, or save yourself.
As candidate after candidate elects to save himself, Franks continues his desperate search to find the one hero selfless and capable enough to save a total stranger. The very kind of person his wife needed.
“The Runner” is the story of that one individual.
Who Are You Running For?
As a society, we revel in the spectacle of physical performance, lionizing those who achieve greatness. We adore the reluctant champion who answers the call to save the world. But what of the average, unassuming individual who saves those in desperate need on a smaller scale, often through great effort and personal sacrifice? Heroes are needed on a daily basis. Our film, "The Runner", provides an alternative picture of heroism and performance; asking the viewer one simple question: Who are you running for?
How Can I Help?
We need to raise $9,000 in 30 days. We have completed the bulk of principle photography. So far, most of the funds have come out of our own pockets. We have also been very fortunate that various locations have allowed us to shoot without charge and that we have a crew willing to sacrifice time without pay.
However, we still need to finance the complete editing and post-production process, as well as the promotion and marketing of the film: private advanced screenings, securing a night at the Alamo Drafthouse for the private premiere, and promoting the release of the film through the film festival circuit. For an independent film such as ours, this is one of the best ways to get noticed and obtain distribution (theater, DVD, Video On Demand release).
Finally, if we can secure enough funds, we would like to invest in some more equipment and manpower to assist in our future film-making. “The Runner” is only the beginning for us! We plan on using this short film to build support for a feature film already under development.
The Kickstarter Process
Kickstarter is an ALL OR NOTHING fund raising platform. If we don't reach our goal before time is up, we don't get to keep any of the money. Everything is returned to those who donated and the project doesn't see a dime. We have 30 days to reach our $9,000 goal, so we need your help. Spread the word to your friends, family, and social networks. If you have never used Kickstarter before, making an account is easy, and we’re happy to answer any questions you may have about the process. You can contact us via our facebook page, twitter, or through official site.
Most rewards will be delivered within 30 days of the Kickstarter project’s completion. We expect the film to be completed much sooner than that, probably towards the end of this summer. After the film is completed we plan to submit it to several of the top film festivals around the world, including the Austin Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival. This can sometimes be a lengthy process, and until the film finds distribution (theatrical or other), we would not be able to make it available to the general public. However, we plan to have several screenings to promote the movie, and will keep you informed so you can see what you helped us create.
Each and every contribution brings us one step closer to our $9,000 goal. As a show of gratitude to our backers, we've established the following possible rewards as a show of our appreciation.
* Our Gratitude and a Facebook thank you note
* A personalized “The Runner” picture of you as an official backer
* A "Who are you running for?" T-Shirt
* Special Edition DVD with behind the scenes pictures, deleted scenes, bonus footage, interviews and director's commentary
* Special thanks in the film’s credits
* The Film's Soundtrack
* Two tickets to the film’s premiere with reserved seating
* Your name (plus one) included on the VIP list for our private premiere after-party
