Beyond the Aether is an experimental theater game about a British colony lost in the 1800s. It takes place over a weekend in the Pacific Northwest every three months. Beyond the Aether makes players into writers, actors, and directors as they create a shared story.
We are running the next game of Beyond the Aether on Labor Day weekend 2013. It will begin the night of August 30th and continue through September 2nd. We need your help to make the game happen, and to make sure we can continue the story afterwards!
What does a ticket get me?
* Play your own character! Design and build a character in the Beyond the Aether system, and play them as a central part of the story!
* Included on-site lodging! Get a bunk with mattress in one of the on-site cabins, right next to the action!
* Collectible game pieces! Acquire brass coins and Gobbets during the game, and keep or trade them as you wish!
* Major story influence! Shape the next several months of Beyond the Aether's story through your actions.
* Develop new character abilities! Work with staff to create unique and interesting powers that no one else knows about.
Yes! If you get the Ticket Pack or above, you can add $20 to your pledge to make the ticket transferable! Rather than being usable for just the Labor Day game, the ticket will be available for any Beyond the Aether event you choose! We have another event roughly every three months, and the next upcoming event is December 6-8.
We will also be creating Principle Patches. These hand-finished pieces of cloth will allow you to announce your allegiance to any of the Principles, or simply add a bit of embellishment to your favorite garment. The Principles are pictured above, so you can choose which one you want. But, we will be producing them for all seven Principles! They will be delivered at our fifth game this December. To obtain one for yourself, simply add $4 to your pledge. Or, if you want an entire set, just $20 will get you all seven!
We've got our first two stretch goals up! More will be unlocked as we hit our goals.
$2700 Stretch Goal
If we reach our first stretch goal, we will print and introduce elements for resolving the eventual war that is looming closer in the game. This custom wargame will allow each character to contribute in their own way, both on and off the battlefield. Each nation will receive unique units and powers to represent their specialty.
$3000 Stretch Goal
If we hit our second stretch goal, we will give each backer at the Collecter's Pack and above a uniquely-numbered key along with their pledge. Each key will be linked to a specific warehouse in the Beyond the Aether game, allowing for storing and transporting goods without going through the nations. It will be just one more tool in your inventory for ensuring the success of your team.
What kind of game is it?
Beyond the Aether is a live action, improvisational theater game. You get a chance to wear a costume and act as your character through the entire weekend. There are multiple different ways to get involved in the story, from intrigue and political machinations to physical combat. Combat is resolved through safe foam "swords" and foam dart blasters, leading to a harmless but exciting and dramatic scene. There is an economy to create, currency to devalue, city politics to manipulate, and all kinds of other avenues of exploration for your creativity.
Beyond the Aether was inspired heavily by sandbox-style games, where a vast open world is given over to players. They can then choose how to interact with it. Beyond the Aether is that style of game, but turned up to eleven. You don't just get to interact with what is already there: you get to add and shape new things to the game every time it meets.
We need a certain amount of money to pay for operating costs for Beyond the Aether. Most expensive is vehicle rental to get our props and costuming to the site, and rental of the site itself for the weekend. We would love to cover this through conventional ticket sales, but we need to get a certain minimum. Our plan is therefore to offer ticket sales at our normal price for the extra-long weekend, if we can get enough funding to cover basic costs. If we don't get enough funding, we will have to raise ticket prices to cover costs, and we'd rather have more players than more expensive tickets.

Risks and challenges
When we started Beyond the Aether, we weren't sure whether we could successfully run such an experimental game. We weren't sure whether the community would come together to support us. But they did, and the ride so far has been amazing!
We've run three games so far, and each has been better than the last! Really, the thing we have been lacking is enough players to really make our vision complete. We are hoping to gather those players and that support through this Kickstarter.
We have carefully budgeted how much money we would need to run this event, and have given ourselves a small margin for potential error. All told, this campaign meeting its goals will give us just enough funds to complete the next game. Afterwards, we hope to go back to ticket sales in the normal manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
