Frequently Asked Questions
We believe in a different product philosophy. There are scales on the market that allow you to connect to your phone to enable some extra features. When used without a phone, however, they are either the same as a regular scale or non-functional.
Our product philosophy is to develop around solving a fixed set of problems. The current VOOM scale is optimized to achieve consistency, for pros, enthusiasts and regular consumers alike. Our product is developed to directly achieve this goal by integrating "smart" features into one single device, you may use it with or without a smartphone and still enjoy the full brewing experience.Last updated:
Yes! We know that great roasters take pride in their beans and want their customers to best be able to unleash the magic that’s sealed inside them. However, getting the best out of the beans can be difficult. Different beans require specific conditions and processes in order to get the most out of them. It’s really difficult to teach these methods to customers one by one.
With the VOOM smart scale, you can communicate your brewing magic through a brewing profile and pass that to your customers and friends so that they can recreate it whenever they wish.Last updated:
Yes. The scale is protected from water in all usage scenarios when brewing coffee, but cannot be fully submerged in water (which is not a use case for a scale). There are two things that come up frequently:
How do you protect it underneath the knob?
The design of our top cover features a ring which is placed and connected to the top cover underneath the hollow area of the knob, acting as a “wall” to prevent water from leaking in to the electronics. It might not be obvious in the pictures, but if you look very closely from the side, you can see it.
Why do you use a magnetic charging port?
Coffee making environments, especially cafes and shops, are humid and have many potential water exposure scenarios. Although not as frequent, we want to protect the side of the scale from water too. Regular USB ports are not sufficient so we opted for a magnetic port and sealed off the side so that water cannot leak in.Last updated:
Yes definitely. It’s recommended that you do so, especially after an extended period of not using the scale. We are planning on two methods of calibration, “Simple” is to use one weight (probably 100g) for fast calibration and “Extended” is to use multiple weights for more accurate calibration. We will include the calibration weights for you.Last updated:
In “Auto” mode, Yes. There are two modes you can choose from in the “Settings” menu, namely “Auto” and “Manual”, which dictates how to start the timer (curve) when brewing. In “Manual”, a key press is required to start, like on most scales. If “Auto” is chosen, then the timer (curve) starts when you begin pouring water.Last updated:
The app is 90% finished and it was used in our campaign video. However, we probably won't release it until the scale is shipped just because it won't be very useful without the scale.
Android app will be available when the product is shipped.Last updated:
The top part of the scale is covered with Acrylic which should provide enough protection. On top of that there will be a piece for extra protection included if needed. We haven't decided on the final design and material to use on that piece yet.Last updated:
Yes. The scale has automatic unit conversion built in. If you choose (oz & F) as your default units, weight and temperature will be displayed in such units even if you are obtaining the brewing profiles in (g & C).Last updated:
