About this project
What is the best way to breathe to support my voice?
How can I have a more commanding, resonant tone?
How do I maintain my vocal health?
How do I breathe with my diaphragm? And where IS my diaphragm anyway!?
How Your Voice Works is a seven-part online course that answers all of these questions and so much more. Built as both a complete and thorough foundation for voice students, as well as a great way to fill in content gaps for teachers, this course will dive deep into the science behind how your vocal mechanism actually works, as well as healthy usage and maintenance. Wanna learn more? Keep reading!
WHO AM I?
My name is Elissa Weinzimmer. I’m a vocal health specialist and the founder of Voice Body Connection. I'm creating a brand new online course called How Your Voice Works.
I started teaching voice because I lost my own voice when I was 21 years old. While I was getting my undergraduate degree, I was pushing my voice past its limits and not taking good care of my vocal health. One morning I woke up and couldn't talk. It felt like I had shards of glass in my throat, and I was very scared. I had to go on vocal rest for a month and it took years to understand what had happened and why. In the process of healing myself, I decided I wanted to teach voice so I could help prevent or alleviate other people from experiencing what I’d gone through. In my journey of training, I've become certified in Fitzmaurice Voicework® and Hatha yoga, studied speech science and somatics, and completed an MFA in Theatre Voice Pedagogy at the University of Alberta.
It’s become my mission to share how the voice works, because understanding it has helped me regain my own voice. There are some great resources out there, but the problem is that they’re all over the place and often hard to understand.
How Your Voice Works is a simple, easy to access and easy to understand online course that explains vocal function. I’m designing the course so you can complete it in less than a week, and I'm also pulling together some of the greatest experts on the body, breathing, and the voice to contribute content - who happen to be some of my mentors from all around the world.
I love bringing things together in a cross-discliplinary way, so this information comes from my many areas of research including: singing theory, theatre voice techniques, yoga, anatomy, and speech science.
WHY YOU'RE HERE
So here’s where I need your help: In order to create this course, I need a team to help me produce it, a location to have the shoot, camera and sound equipment and operators, and a beautiful website on which to host the class. That’s why I’m doing this Kickstarter and asking you for your support. The full cost of the class when it launches in late February 2016 is going to be $149. However if you pledge today, not only will you pre-purchase the course, but you’ll get the class for it for a third less: $99 (plus I'm throwing in an exclusive backers-only workshop!).
Let’s be honest, you could pay MUCH more than $99 for a lesson with a top voice coach here in New York. But spending this $99 will allow you to get those nagging questions you’ve always had about your voice answered so every voice lesson, every acting class, every speech you do after this will be more productive. Buy it for yourself, buy it for a friend, and/or buy it for a student! Think of it as investing in the gift of knowledge for the New Year!
So pledge $99 or pledge any amount. Anything and everything helps!
I am delighted and extremely honored to be bringing this content into the world. I promise to make the science not only digestible but really fun. Thanks so much for your support and I'll see you in the course!

Risks and challenges
There is certainly risk that there will be delay in the release of the course if our financial goals aren't met. My team is talented and dedicated, but needs to be just a bit bigger to make it all happen by our promised release date, February 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
