A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
Modern Storage in Vintage Style
Connect to the history of film and cinema with a repurposed 8mm film canister outfitted with a creatively designed foam insert to carry your modern memory formats.
The tech industry is moving at such breakneck speed that we needed a new (old) device to help us slow down and remember the past. VNTG8 memory card cases help you stay connected with the history of film and cinema.
Canisters: Two Reward Styles
1. New Goldberg Brothers Canister
NEW canisters come from the last remaining stock from Goldberg Brothers, which are believed to have been manufactured in the late 1970s. Goldberg Brothers was one of the first companies to create film reels and hardware back in the early 1900s and later went on to contract with Eastman Kodak to produce many of their cans, reels, and hardware for the fast-growing motion picture industry. These cans come packed in their original retail boxes and include a sticker for labeling the can’s contents. The rewards with these cans will include the can in the unopened retail box, the foam insert, and a set of magnets.
2. Used Surprise Canister
USED canisters come from various purchases stretching across the United States from estate sales, garage sales, pawn shops, antique stores, and personal collections. Some are unused and some have lots of love but all are fully functional and totally awesome. Cans may have labels, stickers, markings, light dings, small scratches, and/or ever-so-slight rusting. Some date back to the 40’s but most are circa 1960-1970. These canisters are vintage and freaking awesome. The rewards with these cans will include the canister (chosen at random for each reward recipient), the foam insert and a set of magnets.
These canisters originally held up to 200’ of 8mm film in regular, dual or super 8 formats and are 5” in diameter. Although there are many styles, sizes, and formats, such as 7” diameter cans or 16mm and 35mm film cans, we chose to go with the smallest and most widely produced version in order to get more of the awesomeness back in the hands of creatives.
Check out the awesome variety of 8mm canisters on our Instagram.
The foam insert is the piece that makes this whole venture possible. It is crafted from 4# Cross-linked Polyethylene foam and designed to friction fit into the canisters and around the center magnets. We sampled many of the foam inserts from modern memory card cases and with the help of our manufacturer, chose the best type of foam to allow for optimum form, function, and durability.
Foam color may change pending availability from manufacturer. Color will either be gray or black. If both are available, we will send out a poll to the backers to vote on which color they would prefer.
The SD and micro SD insets are deeper than your average case in order to hold more cards if needed. The SD insets can fit up to 3 cards each for a total of 18 cards and the micro SD insets can hold up to 5 each for a total of 30. What!?!?
What’s up with the magnets? The vast majority of canisters manufactured were not designed with a locking feature. Many of the lids were loose or at best had a small amount of compression fit to stay closed. A couple awesome magnets in the center of the can help keep the lid on and your memory cards secure. Each reward comes with four 12mm x 3mm N35 Neodymium magnets so you can adjust the desired strength of the magnetism of the lid to the can. The magnets will not destroy your memory cards. $7000: We plan on adding a "Foam Only" Reward once the funding goal is reached. We know that some may already have a canister in their attic and just need the foam insert to start carrying around their memory cards in cool vintage style.
$10,000: We would love to add the ability to choose your own foam color either in gray or black. Reaching this stretch goal will allow us to make our foam order with two different colors for backers to choose.
Manufacturing & Delivery
November - Campaign
December - Final Prototyping & Start of Manufacturing
January - Manufacturing & Delivery to VNTG8
February - Order Processing, Packaging, and Shipping to Reward Recipients
Risks and challenges
This project is fairly low risk since the manufacturing process of the foam insert is fairly simple. We have partnered with a quality foam manufacturing company that has been in the business for over 25 years and has helped guide us in the R&D and prototyping stages. The prototyping process for the foam insert is 90% complete with the remainder being accomplished once we start production. We will go through a couple rounds of revisions to make sure the foam insert is precise.
The Goldberg Brothers canisters are still packaged in their original retail boxes and we want to let the project backer be the first to open the box. That being said, each Goldberg can will not be inspected before delivery so we can not verify its official condition. If there are any major problems with the Goldberg cans we will make every effort to correct the issue.
The used canisters are prepped and ready for inserts.
Things can and sometimes will pop up but we will make every effort to be as transparent and awesome as humanly possible along the way.
Vintage 5" 8mm film canister with previous love and history. These cans vary in brand, color, shape and condition and it will be a surprise as to which one you receive. Some have been well loved and are extra awesome.
