Welcome to the Kickstarter for Heart of Gold Volume I!
Heart of Gold is an ongoing online comic currently hosted on Sparkler Monthly, written and illustrated by the artist duo Eli and Viv.
It's a mystery/romance story with overarching religious themes revolving around the tenuous relationship growing between the main characters Dunant and Ionel.
We've recently wrapped up volume I online and it's been a dream of ours to bring it to print in a big, beautiful hardcover book - and with your help, we can!
In a small French town, an unusual kind of mass is held: the local priest, Dunant, describes it as “faith healing”, promising those who are suffering will be healed of their ailments with just a single touch of his hands. Ionel, a pianist with albinism, seeks out Dunant‘s miraculous touch. He struggles with his failing eyesight, a condition that could potentially put an end to his career. Something about the priest’s blessing soon strikes him as odd, and so Ionel begins investigating.
Ionel uncovers several clues that draw him deeper into the mystery surrounding Dunant. As he starts to slowly befriend the priest, he finds himself delving further into a world of miracles and curses.
Heart of Gold's first volume encompasses 146 pages, featuring 7 chapters with a 10-page bonus story covering one of the protagonists' past.
The book will be printed in A4 (21 x 29.7cm, or 8.27 × 11.69 inches), full color and as a hardcover with a special gold foil finish.
In addition to the book being printed, we've also decided to go back and revisit a couple of pages - with some minor fixes and updated art!
Heart of Gold is a project of passion, having started as a collaborative comic between the two of us in 2016. The process of page creation takes its time, but it's an exciting back and forth between us.
Aside from the hardcover book, there's also several Heart of Gold-related rewards, all (naturally) gold and shiny.
The first tier starts at 5€ with a 1920 x 1080px digital wallpaper.
In addition to the book we're offering a bookmark with hot foil stamping, perfect to put into your copy of volume I!
We've commissioned three incredible artists for an amazing set of A4 prints, available in the Evangelist tier.
We've also designed enamel pins of the protagonists as their respective animal versions, coming at a size of around 35mm (~1.4inches).
Said animal versions tell a story in the gold foil washi tape that can be snatched in the Saint tier!
You can even get a spot as one of Heart of Gold's background characters - find yourself amongst the pews listening to Dunant's sermons, or stand in line in front of Ionel as he waits for his chance to get healed.
Get a chance to commission either Viv or Eli in one of the Testament tiers! The commission would be of you or a character of your choice, either half-or full-body, depending on the composition - on a minimal background, like seen above.
And for the final reward we're offering something special: a handcrafted, custom-tailored windbreaker with a Heart of Gold designed golden embroidery, including every other physical reward.
As an overview, here's an illustrated list of the rewards:
We've prepared some stretch goals that will both spruce up the look of the book, (hint: even more gold) as well as allow us to offer additional rewards to already existing ones.
All in all, it's a bunch of shiny content added to all physical tiers!
For our artist print set, we've asked some crazy skilled artists we both adore and admire! We're beyond ourselves with excitement to have gotten them all on board and are blown away by the beauty of the prints they've done for this Kickstarter.
ELK64 is a Swiss freelance illustrator and indie comic artist, her breathtaking work having adorned board games, magazines and anthologies. We've been fans of her work for years, her dynamic artworks still radiating a sense of calm that captivates the viewer.

Naemi is a recent bachelor graduate and freelance artist, also proficient in both comics and illustration. Their work has struck a chord with us unlike anything else - it's elegant with an air of mystery, precise linework and compositions that awe us every time.
Juliette is an absolute wonderworker to us - she's a current student at Gobelins while also working freelance, with art so charming and stylized that we're always looking forward to her work. She's adept in so many fields that it's always a joy to marvel at her illustrations.
MyDearBasil has a way with structured and precise compositions, combined with colours that are so on point every illustration looks like it could belong into a modern fairytale book. We, at least, would love to see that! We've been consistently inspired and are excited for the illustration they're going to create for our Evangelist and higher tiers.
We have been working on Heart of Gold, our first collaborative comic project, since 2016. Viv Tanner graduated in 2D Animation at the Lucerne School of Applied Sciences and Art, and has been focusing on freelance illustrations for magazine, comic and book covers since 2017. After their time as a cinematic lead for an indie game Eli Baum has been working as a freelance illustrator and comic artist full time since 2017, too.
We've both been pouring a lot of love, effort, sweat, blood, religious sacrifices etc. into the creation of Heart of Gold ever since we started the concept of it - it's our way of exploring art and storytelling in a way we haven't yet, while also focusing on themes and ideas that are significant and fascinating to us. As a queer couple that wants more representation, Heart of Gold is important to us because it tells the story of how the two protagonists are drawn to one another despite their differences.
The amount for the Kickstarter goal is made up of production, shipping and manufacturing costs.
Risks and challenges
We both have experience in preparing book files for printing, as well as packaging and shipping from Europe.
Almost all interiors are ready for printing, only the side-story and the redraws remain to be taken care of. Everything is already formatted for printing and we've obtained quotes from a trusted printer that'll also offer a proof so we can guarantee the best quality for the book!
The only risks we're facing would be shipping and printing delays, but we've set a realistic timeframe in which we can produce and ship the books in a hopefully timely delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
