This little venture was born as a result of a loving, safety-conscious wife concerned for the safety of her mildly reckless, stubborn husband who resisted wearing his reflective safety gear while training for marathons. Visto is the resulting compromise.
The literal translation of "Visto" when translated from Spanish to English is "seen." Our brand is primarily built around the safety and comfort of our customers and helping them be more visible and "be seen" as they perform.
No need to dig out that crusty old reflective vest from the closet before you head out the door. No need to fuss with blinking lights and worry about whether or not they've fallen off or lost battery power part way through your workout. We've got you covered with reflective products ranging from hats to shoe laces. You can simply get dressed for your workout and walk straight out the door in your Visto gear with the peace of mind that comes with knowing you're safer. Not to mention, you'll look AMAZING! And if you're just not feeling up for today's workout, well, we've given added attention to style and fit so you can wear our clothing anywhere (except maybe your wedding...please wear a dress or a tie to your wedding).
Studies have shown auto-pedestrian accidents have increased every year since 2008 and are most likely to occur after sundown. All of our apparel is crafted with highly reflective qualities to make you more visible during your workout, regardless of time of day.
Workout apparel is often bland and boring with plain, solid colors, minimal designs and very little reflective materials. We’re changing that. Our designs are bold, fashionable, and fun with multiple colors and reflective patterns that really light up when the light hits. We focus on delivering high-quality products with the best fabrics and materials to keep you comfortable and performing at your best.
We offer a head-to-toe solution, allowing users to maximize their visibility while working out in low lighting conditions. Also, we’re already planning, designing and sourcing future prototypes for our second phase of production, featuring cycling kits, leggings, shorts, backpacks, jackets, etc. each of which will demonstrate our signature reflective qualities, helping you to “Be Seen.”
So for the early-riser, who likes to squeeze in a workout before the sun comes up. For the busy parent, who can only fit their walk, run or bike ride in once the kids are in bed. For the working professional, who spends a long day at the office and needs some time on the road to unwind. For your family, who needs to know you'll be coming home safely when you leave. We are TJ and Tanner Smith, a couple of middle-aged brothers with dad bods, trying to make a difference in the world. Visto is one way we’re doing it.
TJ, the elder of the two has a strong business background with a degree in Finance and Economics, an MBA and more than thirteen years of experience in various Finance, Supply Chain, and Business Operations roles. He currently acts as Treasurer for a small non-profit which serves local families in need of financial assistance. He's a spreadsheet geek, a father of three, a husband of one, a mediocre runner, a pretty good skier, and a lover of inspiring biographies, true-crime podcasts and cinnamon bear candy. He also makes amazing oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
Tanner is a full-time orthopedic Nurse Practitioner and gets to cut people open almost every day (he usually sews them up after, too). He also has experience in various sales and inventory management positions prior to his medical career. He is an athlete with an eye for fashion, a supreme work ethic, and a natural business sense. He’s a father of four, husband of one, new dog owner, song writer, an amazing golfer (usually), basketballer, and a big fan of Dr. Pepper and all things Utah State University (go Aggies!). Of the two brothers, he for sure got the most intelligent and athletic genes.
Our marketing and sales strategy includes a strong social media presence to drive consumers to our online store. The social media marketplace is a powerful tool and we intend to use it to our advantage. We've established relationships with several key social media influencers in the fitness realm to help test products and promote our brand. We also recently launched an online marketing campaign titled “Be Seen” in which we promote our brand through celebrating everyday individuals making themselves seen through inspiring acts and doing good in the world.
Additionally, we plan to build brand awareness in the industry through representation at trade shows and race expos, athlete sponsorship, and marketing giveaways. We have no doubt we'll become a disruptive force in the athletic apparel world with the Visto brand and the products we offer.
Risks and challenges
While we acknowledge there are always risks with any new venture, we’re confident and committed to taking any steps necessary to mitigate them and overcome any challenges. Following are a few of the major ones we've identified, including our plans to navigate them and still be successful.
Manufacturing Partners: we’ve spent an extensive amount of time and effort identifying partner suppliers who best suit our goals and objectives. Having already weeded out several candidates, we’ve identified the best possible primary AND secondary partners in order to position ourselves for success. We’ve also partnered with a firm specializing in Sourcing and Supply Chain Management to ensure our suppliers meet our standards.
Quality Control: the risk of delivering a sub-par product always exists when manufacturing any product. As mentioned, we’ve enlisted the help of a firm specializing in Sourcing and Supply Chain. This partner takes a boots-on-the-ground approach to quality control, providing on-site representation to ensure the product meets specifications and requirements and on-time delivery. That said, our customers are our number one priority and we’re committed to them and their satisfaction through delivering quality products.
Man-power: we recognize the possibility of demand exceeding the bandwidth we have with the current team, but again, we’re committed to the satisfaction of our customers. Our business plan and budget takes this into consideration, allowing for additional team members as needed to fulfill orders. We’ve also identified various channels to fill those roles if and when necessary.
Product Sizing: how do you provide a product in just a few different sizes to a population of individuals, each of their own unique shape, size and preference? This is a huge challenge, however, we’ve worked closely with our suppliers in order to get the specifications and measurements of our products just right. Again, we strive for a satisfied customer and we’re prepared to accept and make changes as needed.
International Shipping: with a targeted audience spread across the globe, fulfilling international orders has been one of our biggest challenges and concerns. We've considered several different alternatives and in the end, due to the high cost of shipping, duties, and fulfillment services, we are unable to justify fulfilling international orders for now. Over the last several months we've been diligently sourcing fulfillment providers throughout the world and looking at various options and we hope to offer shipment to other countries very soon.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
