About this project
Vis Major Brewing is a brewery-in-planning in Omaha, NE. VMB will offer a community-centric taproom with 10 taps featuring a staple menu of five flagship beer styles available year round. Five rotating seasonal taps and a number of small batch experiments will be available at various points in the year. VMB produces quality beers with balance, character, and complexity to push the palate of the true craft beer drinker.
The name Vis Major, Latin for “Act of God,” is inspired by the history of fermentation by Belgian farmers. At the end of harvest, farmers would crush and boil remaining grains and leave them in open casks.Wild yeast unknowingly blew in, fermenting the wort, but they believed it was an act of God that turned it into beer.
The partnership between Tom and Lindsey offers a balance of strengths, enhanced by a shared passion for craft beer that has taken this married couple from a home brew hobby to aspiring brewery owners. Like many home-brewers we began with an IPA kit in 2011, and one year later Tom advanced to brewing all-grain. Through extensive research and experimentation we have created 5 flagship recipes and have many more lined up to rock the Omaha market.
At first glance you wouldn’t expect Tom’s background in Aircraft Maintenance and the Marine’s to translate to brewing, but it requires the same amount of attention to detail, mechanical development, leadership, and hard work. Making beer is the perfect combination of art and science. Tom’s technical mindset not only applies to the brew system, maintenance, and cleanliness, but also shines in developing recipes. Tom has diligently researched the brewing process, hop utilization, and yeast biology.Through self-education and trial and error, Tom can now take any beer from concept to tap.
Lindsey has cultivated an understanding of beer markets and trends on a global and national level for the last three years as a Sales Representative for an independent distributor. She applies this knowledge to recipes developed with Tom to ensure that it’s absolutely the best beer it can be. Vis Major Brewing is simply unwilling to put out a beer that doesn’t meet their high standards. Now that VMB has a solid foundation of recipes, Tom and Lindsey are seeking ways to turn them on their heads and push the flavor even further.
Amen American Wheat, 5.4% ABV. An unfiltered wheat designed with a rich, malty body in mind with a crisp, citrus flavor. A beer so drinkable, you’ll want to throw your hands up and holler, AMEN!
Psalm Saison, 8.9% ABV. This Imperial Saison captures the zesty-spiced characteristics of a traditional saison, while amplifying the malty body and creamy head, resulting in a high-gravity thirst quencher.
Convert Citra IPA, 7.5% ABV. Designed as a SMASH beer (using a Single Malt and Single Hop), the Convert IPA beautifully showcases all that the citra hop has to offer. With an appearance of pale yellow and crisp clarity, the aroma and flavor capture the luscious tropical, floral and citrus notes with balance and subtle bitterness. If you didn’t love IPA’s before, this one is sure to make you a believer.
9th Plague Black IPA, 8.5% ABV. This Imperial Black IPA was named after the ninth plague of darkness scourging the Egyptians in Biblical times. Bold dark malts with roasted chocolate flavor create a sweet foundation while bold bittering hops create a crisp finale for the finish. We love a good IPA even when it’s a bit sinister.
Almighty Stout, 8.5% ABV. A chocolate oatmeal stout with a velvety smooth mouth-feel and rich chocolate finish. The balance of aroma and flavor makes it easy to savor year-round.
Spring: Righteous Raspberry Tart Saison, 8.4% ABV. A Farmhouse Saison brewed with tart hibiscus, black peppercorn, and fermented with fresh raspberries. The natural fruit esters and spice notes of the Belgian yeast are heightened with a bright lemon citrus finish, a subtle coriander nose, and vibrant pink appearance. Enjoy February – April.
Summer: Eden’s Apricot, 7.2% ABV. A summer refresher, Eden’s Apricot combines fresh fruit flavor and malty body with a subtle spiced finish. Enjoy May-July.
Fall: Proverbial Pumpkin, 7.0% ABV. This Imperial Pumpkin spiced ale captures the season with a splash of nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice. Enjoy August – October.
Winter: Wiseman’s Spiced Stout, 9.5% ABV. This Ginger Bread Imperial Stout captures the essence the holiday season with a bold spiced aroma and a rich, decadent chocolate finish. Spread the Joy November – January.
Starting a brewery is no easy task. We are proud of our progress over the last few years as we have researched and developed the concept for Vis Major Brewing. It was last fall when we first heard praises as we poured our beers at a public event, and we knew our efforts were paying off. We know our beers are exceptional, but to have a stranger confirm it is the best reward! Since then we have poured at festivals and private events, spreading the word of VMB. We have poured our hearts not only in our beers, but in our branding as well, and have commissioned talented artists, graphic designers, and video producers to help us bring our brand to life.
There are several moving parts in the process to open any business and even more when it comes to one that serves alcohol. We have been actively working with brokers and developers to find the ideal location for VMB. With your support, we will be able to secure a space and begin construction. We have decided on a brewery manufacturer from which we will be sourcing all of our stainless steel. However, we know there is still a long way to go, but we are ready for the challenge. If anything has taught us to be resilient as we work towards this dream, it is our experience in buliding VMB over the last several years. While we have our own personal capital, we are in need of the last $25,000 to make our dream a reality.
Equipment and Supplies – From grains to yeast, and boil kettle to fermentation vessels, we need it all to open our doors. The funds raised through Kickstarter will directly go towards purchasing the heart and soul of our brewery, a $25,000 brew system. Every dollar raised will help us achieve our goal of bringing Vis Major Brewing to Omaha!
HOW DO I DONATE?
We are so glad you asked. With every little bit donated, we are that much closer to opening our doors. Kickstarter is an all or nothing funding platform, so if we do not attain our goal in the designated time, you will not be charged for your donation. But, it won't come to that right? Here is how you can get started
- Create and log in to your Kickstarter account
- Choose your donation level and complete the transaction
Share, Share, Share your support with friends, online and in-person
If you have read this far into our project, thank you for taking the time to do so. We are not flying solo in this endeavor, and want to thank our friends, family, mentors, advisors, artists, fellow brewers, and community for believing in our dream and helping make it a reality. We promise to make you proud. Cheers!
Risks and challenges
As with any upstart, there are risks involved. Breweries are a capital intensive investment, mostly in stainless steel. There are many possible delays in our build out, such as stalled TTB licensing, lengthy city licensing, and unforeseen build out costs. We have taken the time to understand the risks involved by gathering as much information from experts in their fields, but understand there may be delays. We will keep all who have generously donated updated on our progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
