About

Hey.

We are Vision Ramps, one of the world's leading skatepark design and construction companies. We are building an indoor skatepark just north of Glasgow City Centre, in a 30,000 sq.ft unit at 100 Borron Street. We have already spent 7 years on this project, securing the location and gaining the funds we need to open an incredible park for Glasgow. We are now asking for your help to make this project accessible to everyone

So, what is the aim of this fundraiser?

We have enough money to complete the project and open the park, but we want to make the facility accessible to all. The money you help to raise on kickstarter will allow us to purchase more hire equipment and offer hire, entry and lessons to locals who cannot easily afford them. The aim of this is to get more people involved in our sports, and to improve the wellbeing of people in our nearby communities. All of our instructors are qualified, paid professionals.

It will also help us further develop our payment app, which will provide discreet, free access to certain underprivileged local users. Discretion is very important to us. There can be a stigma associated with accessing free services: an inquiry into school poverty by a Scottish Parliament committee found that some children feel “socially segregated” by the current free school meals system which sets them out as different from their peers. We are developing a system which protects the identity of its non-paying users.

Our payment system will use private iPads to dispense both free and paid-for tickets, which look identical to other customers and desk staff. We already have a working beta version of this system, and would like to spend some money on improvements and ultimately on testing in other regions and centres.

Any money we raise beyond our target will be spent on facility improvements (more skatepark obstacles), improvements to our app offering, and social events within the park. As a community interest company, The Loading Bay is serious about our goals: to increase access to freestyle sports, and to develop our local scene.

Our user base includes young people from Possilpark and Springburn, as well as those from the rest of Glasgow. These neighbouring areas face significant economic and social issues, and for most of these people, regularly attending a premium sports facility is financially unrealistic. We believe that all talent deserves an equal chance to succeed, and that everyone has the right to an active and healthy lifestyle. This philosophy has underpinned The Loading Bay’s development at every stage.

If you share our passion for this dream, then have a look at some of the rewards we are offering to gain your support.

Facility Overview:

STREET PLAZA

Our street plaza is built around the building's existing loading bay, and so it has a mixture of built and original surfaces, for a more authentic street feel.  Everything you'd expect from a good street plaza is present, including flatrails, handrails, ledges, banks and moveable obstacles.

BOWL / MINIRAMP AREA

Our bowl includes a 7ft deep end with a vert extension and a shallower 5ft end, connected by a variety of hips. Adjacent to this is a beginners mini-ramp which is perfect for learning the basics of skating transition.

MODULAR / FLATGROUND SPACE

Even the best parks can get boring after the 20th visit. For this reason, we have dedicated an entire section of the park to a dynamic and adaptable space which will evolve over time. A collection of moveable and interchangeable obstacles will give users the creativity to assemble and ride their own set-ups.

This area also houses a set of bleachers, which can be used as grind ledges, as seating during video premieres or as a huge stair set to trick down. These can also slide out from underneath the bowl, revealing a storage area for movable obstacles.

ACROBATICS / FREESTYLE ROOM

These facilities are regularly used by gymnasts and snowboarders, but can be useful for anyone involved in freestyle sports. They help to improve overall athleticism, and offer a safe space to learn and practice spins and co-ordination. Our freestyle room includes a super-trampoline, standard trampoline, raised platforms, a sprung floor, and a variety of gymnastics obstacles. Foam pits can be accessed from a quarter-pipe take-off, trampolines and the sprung floor.

CAFE / SHOP

Our cafe will serve healthy, high-quality food and drinks. Fast wifi and a comfortable, beautifully designed environment will make this a desirable destination for food after a session, or for parents who want to enjoy their wait.

Parts for BMX, skateboards, and scooters will be stocked in our shop alongside clothing and other accessories.

Our Supporters

Lots of great people are supporting our project; just take a look at our fundraising video. Athletes like Danny MacAskill and Billy Morgan are excited about using the space, and about the opportunities it can bring for the next generation of talent. Of course, not everyone is destined to win an olympic gold medal or rack up millions of youtube views, but sport participation can change lives in other ways. We spoke to Glasgow-born John Buultjens, now Global Brand Manager of Haro Bikes, about how BMX has changed his life for the better.

John is living proof that participation in sports like these can improve lives. If you are interested in learning more about his story, he has written a book: "Ride: BMX Glory, Against All The Odds, The John Buultjens Story", and a film adaptation was created in 2018 titled "Ride".

The Loading Bay should open its doors in September or early October. With your help it can be available to as many people as possible. So buy a brick, come to our VIP funders party, or purchase some half-price sessions. If you really love the project and don't skate or BMX, we would really appreciate a donation. And finally, if you are working on a similar project, we are offering the chance to buy our park design expertise at a discounted rate.

Thanks, Vision Ramps.

Risks and challenges

Funding projects on kickstarter can come with risks. Fortunately, this project is already well under-way, with the build for our skatepark fully funded and close to completion. We are committed to delivering our rewards within the allocated time-frame.
