About this project
The year is 2042. The southern lunar pole is now inhabited by a belt of self-sustaining lunar habitats. The United States, Russia, China, and Europe have planted their national flags.
This belt, called Moonbase Alpha, has become our key strategic jump off point for the exploration of Mars and beyond.
In Moonbase Alpha 2, you are an astronaut stationed on the first permanent lunar settlement, Moonbase Alpha.
Explore the moon’s surface, make repairs and overcome crises. Play in single- or multiplayer in this open sandbox on the moon.
History of Moonbase Alpha
In 2010, in partnership with NASA and U.S. Army Game Studios, Virtual Heroes released the original Moonbase Alpha. Named one of “Top 50 Free Games” of 2013 by PC Gamer Magazine, Moonbase Alpha has garnered 1.5 million downloads and counting.
We invite anyone who hasn’t played Moonbase Alpha to stop by Steam and download a free game. Then, join us as we embark upon our next great adventure to create Moonbase Alpha 2.
Moonbase Alpha 2 has no outside source of funding, so we need your help to get this mission off the ground. We want to say thank you to all of our space cadets who helped make the first Moonbase Alpha such a fan favorite and ask that you consider backing us to help bring Moonbase Alpha 2 to a new generation.
Belief in our future in space is belief in ourselves -- that the extraordinary is possible if we set our minds to it. That is an idea worth supporting. We invite you to join us in this amazing initiative leading us into the future.
We salute the bravery of those first astronauts and the tireless determination of the early rocket scientists and engineers who leapt into the great unknown with little more than a belief that man belonged amongst the stars.
And we salute the visionaries behind the inspiring new industries now taking on the ultimate challenge of multi-planetary colonization. Their first steps of space transport are already underway. Read the incredible stories of Virgin Galactic and SpaceX.
As veteran developers who have already successfully launched Moonbase Alpha, we will leverage that experience to create Moonbase Alpha 2. Our high level objectives for Moonbase Alpha 2 are:
- Learning through Gaming
- Create a Living Moonbase
- Enable Player-Driven Experiences
Learning Through Gaming
We believe in the power of learning through play. The original Moonbase Alpha taught basic lessons on topics such as gravity, solar power, geology and robotics.
Moonbase Alpha 2 will seek to improve on and expand this educational content by providing new challenges and opportunities for learning driven by cutting-edge Unreal Engine 4 and Nvidia Phys-X technology.
Create a Living Moonbase
We understand that the success of Moonbase Alpha was realized in no small part through the imagination and ingenuity of our players and we'd like to make Moonbase Alpha 2 a collaborative effort. To this end, Kickstarter backers will have regular opportunities to contribute their thoughts on features for this exciting new game.
Moreover, we'd like to continue development of Moonbase Alpha 2 beyond our initial launch features. We want to build the systems that will enable us to give you high-quality new tools & missions to keep you exploring and learning with Moonbase Alpha.
What inspires you?
Player Driven Experience
Moonbase Alpha 2 seeks to enhance players' ability to shape their gaming experience. One of our primary objectives is to hand you the tools to create your experience. New gameplay elements such as thruster packs will enable players to experiment and play in exciting new ways. Improvise and discover - this is your world.
Our goal is to create the successor to Moonbase Alpha with new tools, new challenges, new nationalities, and (of course) text-to-speech. But we can't do it without your help. The original game was developed in collaboration with NASA, but no outside funding source exists for Moonbase Alpha 2. That's why we're reaching out to you.
Moonbase Alpha 2 will encourage teamwork amidst the challenging environs of the moon. Work together. Overcome crises on the lunar surface. Discover new tools. Improvise. Prevail.
We’re setting out to create a fun and inspirational sandbox game on the moon. But what if our backers and fans say, “We want more Moonbase Alpha!” What if you take us beyond our initial Kickstarter goal? Then it’s our turn to switch on those rocket boosters to create those extra features - more missions, more tools, more vehicles, more customization.
Here's what you'll get in return.
Virtual Heroes was founded in January 2004. From the beginning, Virtual Heroes has focused on simultaneously entertaining and educating. Our highly immersive, dynamic and fun content links learning objectives to measurable performance outcomes.
Risks and challenges
You may have heard this before, but it bears mentioning again: making videogames is hard. The videogame industry is plagued by slashed features, budget overruns, missed release dates and broken promises.
Virtual Heroes has been in business for over ten years, with a proven track record of creating serious games and training applications on time, on budget.
