More than 250km/h over Sweden, purely on renewable energies: a pilot prepares for new form of aerial racing.

About this project

A MAD DASH FOR THE LINE...

The finish line is Sunday at 17:00 CET (12:00pm EDT). If we reach our target one minute later, our project remains unfunded and all the rewards are cancelled. So, let’s agree that the final glide for this race starts ….. today.

UPDATE: What's in it for me? If you're still unsure as to why you should pledge to a project about Sweden, Mario Hytten's blog, The Halo Effect, makes it clear why this project is vital for ALL glider enthusiasts. Click on the image to go to the blog.

The project is in two-stages. The Kickstarter campaign will finance the first stage.

STAGE ONE: THE PROMO

This is the one we need your pledges for. TV shows need a pilot episode to convince the world that their concept works. But since this project is full of glider pilots, we’re calling this The Promo. It will introduce our “stars” and give a taste of what’s to come in the documentary, which will be called “Wings over Sweden”.The Promo won’t be shown on TV, but will be used to woo broadcasters, advertisers, film funds, tourist boards and the like. And, of course, we will share it with all our pledgers, starting with YOU.

SECOND STAGE: THE DOCUMENTARY

Once we’ve blown the world away with our gorgeous Promo and drummed up further funding through conventional channels, we’ll be able to make the Documentary proper. It will consist of three one-hour episodes to be broadcast on a leading Swedish channel, plus a 30-minute version to be broadcast internationally. We’re hoping to have renowned Swedish director Folke Rydén on board for the production of the Documentary, and we’ve secured a letter of intent setting out our planned collaboration.

The documentary will follow four world-class sailplane pilots who aspire to represent Sweden in a future elite competition series, the Skyrace World Cup. We will follow them as they are put through their paces in a series of challenges designed to select the Swedish ace. Think of it as a televised, head-to-head battle to fly the flag for your country in one of racing’s purest competitions.

It’s not just about flying; it’s also about stunning landscapes and environmental success stories. Sustainability and natural beauty are central pillars of Wings over Sweden. We will also have a celebrity from the world of sports, business, science or politics as a passenger in at least one of the planes.

Can you really appreciate the beauty of a country before you have experienced it from the skies?

REWARDS, REWARDS, REWARDS!

What’s the point of pledging if there’s nothing in it for you? Well, there’s plenty in it for you, actually, as you can see in the column on the right. If you want to know more, there’s a detailed description further down the page.

NO UNDERFUNDED PROJECTS

We are directly responsible to you for completing the project and delivering the rewards as per our descriptions. However, Kickstarter has removed the need for you to ’wait and see’ what support the project is receiving: pledged funds are only collected once the target amount has been reached. In other words, you can pledge now, but your card will only be debited when/if we reach our target. It’s like “no win, no fee”, but without the lawyers.

DISTRIBUTION

The Promo will be available in the summer of 2013 on the internet, streamed and downloadable.

The Documentary is aimed for first broadcast in 2014. Later it will of course also be available on DVD and Blu-ray.

FOR QUICK DECIDERS

We have now covered the essentials of our campaign. If you are busy and want to take a decision quickly, you could proceed on the information you have at this point.

There’s a LOT more information below, and even more available in the clickable FAQ section.

BUT…if you have decided to pledge already, click on your reward of choice in the column to the right and GO FOR IT!

Who’s behind this and why?

The project has the full backing of Planetaire, the promoters of the Skyrace World Cup. They financed the biggest production to date about gliding in order to demonstrate its true potential as a TV sport.

The way governments and corporations communicate about the environment and sustainability is often complex and un-exciting. Our approach is: tell compelling stories, do not preach; talk to the heart, not to the head.

‘Wings over Sweden’, its sequels in other countries, and ultimately the Skyrace World Cup, will centre around heroes, adventure and sport. But they also pack a powerful message: free and clean energy does not mean less excitement.

Specially developed Skyrace competition class gliders will be capable of almost 300kmh powered exclusively by solar and wind power. In this Formula One for the 21st century, renewable energies replace the engines. Natural landscapes provide the circuits.

To develop this vision, the 20 pilots will be paired with 20 global corporations that share a set of clearly defined values. Follow them closely: they will be among the more significant voices shaping our future.

Additional information about the reward:

THANK YOU! (£10.00)

What can we say? Our thank you will be more than a little special – warm, heartfelt, not a little emotional. We know, we know – we miss you too. Don’t worry; you can download the promo and watch it for free to keep us close.

Additional information about the reward:

INSPIRER (£25.00)

As well as getting a key to download the the promo once made, with INSPIRER you can steer the development of the documentary. After all, this film project belongs to all of us, so when we offer you the chance to get involved, we really mean it. Go on – get your hands dirty. There are important decisions to be made about how the documentary pans out. We’re not asking you to write the thing, but we’d love some input from our backers, for example:

CELEBRITIES:Which celebrities should be invited as passengers in one of the episodes? The candidate must be Swedish and come from the field of science, politics, business, entertainment or sport. When the time comes, we’ll be asking you to name your favourites, and later to vote for those that have made it on to the shortlist.

LANDMARKS: Which Swedish regions, cities, landmarks and geographical features should we fly over and highlight in the film? At any time, enter your suggestion (not your house, though) on the map below: right-click on the relevant county, fill in and send the details in the box provided. The best ideas will be submitted to the voting process and may be selected for inclusion in either the Promo or the Documentary. Go on, click it!

ENVIRONMENTAL SUCCESS STORIES: in the same way as you can suggest landmarks, you may also suggest Swedish environmental success stories that lend themselves for being filmed from the air. Alternatively, it could we worth landing there in order to film an editorial story. We’ve got some ideas already, but we’re not sharing ours until you share yours. Click on the map below.

LOBBYING POWER:By signing on as an INSPIRER, you will also help us in our lobbying activities.Because the storyline of ’Wings over Sweden’ will raise some important issues, we will also need to lobby influential people from politics and industry in Sweden, for instance representatives from Visit Sweden, Nordiska TV och Filmfonden, the Minister for the Environment Lena Ek, IT and Energy Minister Ann-Karin Hatt, and more. Hopefully some of them will be sensitive to the fact that we will have a large number of Kickstarter pledgers backing us.

ANDES (£35.00)

Watch Sebastian Kawa become Grand Prix world champion for the third time running, in high definition and some truly outstanding high definition footage from Chile. The gliding community has referred to this as the best film ever made about the sport. Excerpts from the review by Soaring Café:

Planetaire AB, a video production company specializing in aviation videography, has made it possible for the rest of us to participate vicariously in this glorious event. The cinematography is simply stunning and the videos are best viewed on a large flat screen TV. A number of beautiful and engaging soaring videos have been produced over the past decade or so. Every time a new one appears, I think, “Well, it can’t get any better than this.” But then it does! In the opinion of this reviewer, Sailplane Grand Prix in the Andes has set a new standard among soaring videos in cinematography, sound track, and video quality. Words simply can’t do justice to a medium as inherently dynamic and fluid as video. I don’t see how anyone, soaring enthusiast or not, could fail to be drawn in by this remarkable production.

AVIATOR (£75.00)

In order to promote our gliding programmes and competitions to a wider public, we aim to design a new-look outfit for the pilots. We have started from the top, discarding the ‘beach hat’ traditionally worn by glider pilots around the world. So far our favourite is the ‘multitasking bandana’ by Buff®. It is designed to offer technical performance and protection from the elements during a wide range of outdoor activities and sports. Some of our pilots have tested it and declared it perfect to protect from sun and UV in the cockpit of a glider and indeed for most other airsports, with the added bonus that you don’t look like you’re going fly fishing.A limited series will be printed with a ‘Wings over Sweden’ graphic theme, and you will receive one if you sign on for the AVIATOR reward.

GRAFFITI (£120.00)

This is our favourite at HQ. Look at that pristine glider; it’s just asking to be scribbled on! Get your marker pen out and start doodling.

A graffiti can be a sketch, a slogan, or simply your signature; we’ve rustled up some ideas, but you can surely do better than us.

We’ll print your work of art on the fuselage of one of the gliders, just behind the cockpit, and will stay on the plane for the 2013 season. On the dedicated website you will be able to follow “your” pilot’s racing activities and TV work. There will be downloadable photos with your graffiti visible.

Email your graffiti to graffiti@vingaroversverige.com

SVERIGE (£160.00)

This reward is intended for those of you who suspect that Sweden might just be one of the most photogenic countries in the World, but still require tangible proof. Enter Exhibit A: a magnificent table-top book “Sweden from above” by aerial photographer Lars Bygdemark.  After 25 years crouched in airplanes flying over Sweden, he finally has his "big picture" story - the largest aviation photo book about Sweden ever made. In a magnificent 300-page volume, Bygdemark takes us on an epic journey through the sky, a trip that reveals Sweden's considerable size and rich variation in landscapes and topographies, from fertile fields, lush meadows and glimmering lakes to archipelagos, mountains and forests.

Sweden's foremost aerial photographer, Lars Bygdemark worked full-time for four years to complete this major book project. The Swedish-language edition is entitled "Sverige från ovan".

Additional information about the reward:

HIGH-FLIER (£370.00)

This reward is reserved for those of you who are prepared to meet us on a gliding airfield somewhere in Sweden. Most likely you live in the country. You will have a passenger ride with one of Sweden’s best glider pilots, just like the celebrities will do in the Documentary. There will be double commands, so you will be able to try some basic maneuvers yourself. We will agree time and place with you according to your location and the pilot’s schedule. It could also be that you will fly from one of our stopovers during the filming of ‘Wings over Sweden’. An unforgettable experience, for sure.

Additional information about the reward:

CORPORATE (£5,000)

CONFERENCE ON YOUR PREMISES

Do you feel consumers do not to give you enough credit for your progress on environmental/sustainability issues? Do you feel that your investments are not generating the goodwill they deserve? Is your director of sustainability frustrated?

We believe the above happens because companies use antiquated methods in their communications on environmental issues. They fail to apply the principles used with spectacular success by leading FMCG brands. We refer to this problem as the 'Missing link'. The rationale lies at the root of the ‘Wings over Sweden’ Documentary and ultimately the global Skyrace World Cup. With the CORPORATE reward, we offer to share our theories with a delegation from your company, in the shape of the 40min 'Missing Link' conference by Mario Hytten, promoter of the Skyrace World Cup. Travel expenses are in addition.

OFFICE DECORATION

Our CORPORATE reward also includes tangible items of office decoration in the shape of:

-one copy of Lars Bygdemark’s table-top book “Sweden from above” signed by the author (see more detailed description under the SVERIGE award above)

- a triptych of 50x50cm posters from Lars Bygdemark’s aerial photographs of Swedish landscapes, the photographic equivalent of poetry; the signed pictures in the triptych are printed on exquisite aquarelle paper, using time-resistant inks, and mounted on an aluminium frame.

A typical triptych from Lars Bygdemark.

SPONSORSHIP RIGHTS

Additionally, your company will acquire the following rights in connection with the production of the promo-film:

  • logo listed as corporate supporters in the credit roll of the Promo and on the dedicated website
  • right to embed the Promo and the Documentary in your website
  • right to use the name and likeness of the 4 featured pilots for 12 months
  • logo identification on the glider used in the Promo (but not in the Documentary)

Risks and challenges

The crew members are renowned professionals with impressive track records, including the very specific experience of filming sailplanes competing in the Andes. It is probably safe to assume that risks and challenges are unlikely to be production or post-production related.
The four pilots are considered among the top-ten in Sweden today. They are not yet professional glider pilots though, in the sense that they all have a day-job. This may impose limitations on their availability for the project. It may require some flexibility from our part, or the consequence may be that the competition between them will not be entirely equitable. At worst it may mean that one of them has to be replaced before the shooting starts, but the risk of not being able to select a winner is remote.
Sweden is a big country, with rapidly changing weather conditions. This may pose challenges in planning the logistics for a filming mission that spans the country. Our all-Swedish crew will deal with these issues without drama. Some reserves will have to be built into the budget for ‘down days’ and for itinerary changes.

FAQ

  • John Grubbström, president of the internationel airsports federation FAI:

There is no doubt that “Wings over Sweden” will re-kindle many viewers’ latent dreams of flying.
The dream of soaring like a bird is as old as humankind. I am convinced that “Wings over Sweden” will activate the interest in airsports that exists in every young person. The documentary will show that it is possible for anyone to realize this dream.
Airsports give a young person the opportunity to develop both as an individual and as a pilot. Sweden has been successful in airsports throughout the years, not least in gliding. Now it is time again.
Thanks to “Wings over Sweden” our young talents will get the chance to demonstrate the accessibility of the sport and how our beautiful country appears from above in a way that has never before been shown on TV.
This series of documentaries benefits both airsports and Sweden. The project has my warmest support – Good luck!

"The Sailplane Grand Prix videos produced by Planetaire are the best I have ever seen. The sheer drama and beauty of glider racing in magnificent settings is riveting for viewers who are simply astonished by what they are seeing. That this can be achieved without the energy consumption, pollution and noise of some other forms of racing is particularly satisfying to those of us concerned about the planet."

  • Kickstarter is top-dog in the world of crowd-funding, a phenomenon that appeals to us. Rather than being contracted to one high-stakes, pressurised media mogul, we can have a large number of low-stakes, laid-back producers. We want you to be one of them.
Crowd funding allows film producers to preserve their creative freedom; as you will see, this does not mean that we are not going to listen to advice: you have the possibility to suggest ideas and vote on important decisions. You will just not be able to dictate them.
It also means that we keep ownership of our concept; this does not mean that you are not rewarded for your investment. You will just not own our work.
If it takes your fancy, you may pretend to sit in your Hollywood office, puffing on a fat cigar while boasting about your past productions. You just won’t have our whole future in your hands.
That’s a few game-changing innovations enabled by the internet. And Kickstarter.
Now we will try and convince you that our project deserves the time and effort for you to put away the cigar for five minutes and make your first crowd-funding pledge online.
Oh, and size does not matter.

  • ’Wings over Sweden’ will tackle some common perceptions from a refreshingly intriguing angle. Just hold on to your hat, here we go.
Prejudice #1: ”FLYING GLIDERS IS GENTLE AND PEACEFUL”. Don’t say this in the presence of our protagonists Jimmy, Gloria, Gunnar and Simon. These are top-level racing pilots. They constantly look for rising turbulent air and are delighted when it projects them skywards with the force of an express elevator; they seek out the wind currents only meters from rocky cliffs, so close that parachutes are hardly a comfort; passing manoeuvres happen to the right, to the left, over or under the opponent; they fly in gaggles, spying each others’ moves and trying to disguise how much energy they have in store for the mad plunge towards the finish line. There is little that is gentle and peaceful about competitive gliding: it is an exhilarating show.

    Last updated:
  • Prejudice #2: ”GLIDERS ARE LOW PERFORMANCE”. In absolute terms, perhaps. In relative terms, certainly not. Consider this: Formula 1 cars reach 340kmh, current racing gliders only 270km/h. But there is a significant twist: Formula 1 cars need 720bhp engines consuming petrol at the rate of 60litres/100km. Gliders do not have an engine and are powered by sun and wind. The Antares SR racing gliders designed for the Skyrace World Cup will even take-off under their own power: pop-up propellor, electric motors and batteries charged with solar power. Formula 1 spurred on technological development in the car industry during the 20th century. Gliders could play the same inspirational role for energy optimisation in the 21st century. They are simply the most energy efficient vehicles ever built by mankind, a perfect demonstration that our energy challenges will be solved by bold advances and smart technology, not by stepping back in time.

    Last updated:
  • Prejudice #3: ”LIKE IN MOST COMPETITIVE SPORTS, MEN WILL DOMINATE”. Gloria and her female colleagues will hotly contest this point. An objective comparison is impossible: less than 3% of active glider pilots in Sweden are women. Gliding requires a good eye for weather and natural phenomena, a mathematical mind, psychology, tactics, and a great deal of intuition. Performance is not affected by any of the attributes that force many other sports to segregate men and women into different categories. Yet, the international federation still segregates the sexes, and men win most mixed competitions. Why is that? Can the trend be reversed? Could some feminine traits actually be an advantage? Will the difference disappear if a woman pilot can fly without limitations, as a paid professional? Will the first champion be a he or a she? Find out what the protagonists think about these questions.

    Last updated:
  • Prejudice #4: ”SOMEBODY, SOMEWHERE, IS STORING AERIAL FOOTAGE OF SWEDEN AND ITS HERITAGE”. Pointless. Filming technology has made gigantic leaps in the last few years, rendering any stored footage obsolete. The biggest one is the RED camera technology, with seven times the resolution of HD. Effectively, this means Peter Degerfeldt’s footage may be intended for TV, but it could perfectly well be projected on a cinema screen. ’Wings over Sweden’ will therefore have an important side agenda: to document a number of Sweden’s natural and cultural treasures for future generations.

    Last updated:
  • The Documentary will hopefully have many little sisters in other countries. Plans are already underway in Switzerland and Turkey. ‘Wings over Sweden’ will pioneer the concept. Folke Rydén and Peter Degerfeldt are aiming to set the bar very high. You will make it possible.

    Last updated:
  • The Documentary is the first step towards a larger project – the Skyrace World Cup – 10 races every year in some of the most exotic locations on Earth, 20 pilots, 20 countries, 1 winner. One of them will be either Simon, Gloria, Jimmy or Gunnar, whom we will first get to know in the Promo. If viewers like what they see, support for the Swedish Skyrace pilot will start to build up.
