At Vindor, we believe that anyone can make music. Playing music should be affordable, accessible and fun for everyone.
That's why we designed the Vindor ES1. It's an electronic saxophone that is easy to play, fun, and inspires creativity.
Playing music develops cognitive, motor, and emotional skills. It also builds confidence and encourages everyone from kids to adults to express themselves.
The Vindor ES1 is:
- Affordable. For less than $200, the Vindor is cheaper than buying or renting a saxophone, flute or clarinet.
- Relevant to all ages. Lightweight and tough, the Vindor ES1 is designed to be played by adults and children over six years old.
- Satisfying to play. By digitally producing tones, the Vindor ES1 eliminates the squeaks and squawks that frustrate beginners.
- Creative. With a unique sound, quick response, and four-octave span, the Vindor ES1 gives you the flexibility to be inventive and to experiment.
- Mobile. Lightweight, compact and with a built-in rechargeable battery you can play the Vindor ES1 anywhere.
- Quiet when needed. You can play the Vindor ES1 with headphones to play or practice in peace (and out of earshot of roommates, parents, neighbors).
- Connected. Use it as a controller for software instruments and with music apps like GarageBand on desktops, tablets and smartphone.
The way you press the Vindor's buttons to make different notes is the same as a saxophone. We have eliminated a few advanced keys to simplify the playing experience. Even though saxophones are bigger, what each finger does is identical in both the Vindor and saxophone.
The Vindor also has corresponding sound and fingering to a flute or a clarinet.

The Vindor ES1 is appealing to players of all levels. Our testers have included saxophonists from bands including Morphine, Lettuce, and Moon Hooch. The touch buttons provide fast and clear note transitions. The audio jack allows you to plug it into an amplifier and effects pedals to create your own unique sound. The USB MIDI interfaces with professional synthesizers and professional studio equipment for even more versatility.
The Vindor ES1 uses a USB connector to charge the battery and communicate with a computer, smartphone or tablet. It supports MIDI over USB. Use headphones or the built-in speaker. A 1/4" jack connects directly to an amp.
The Vindor ES1 uses open protocols to communicate with a computer, phone or tablet so it doesn't require any plugin, drivers, or administrative privileges. Just plug it in and it works. Because of this, you can easily use it on public or shared computers.
We tested the Vindor ES1 with help of different people, associations, and groups including ZUMIX, a Boston after-school program. At ZUMIX, students of all levels played our prototypes for a 14-week program. In that short time, students created all kinds of music, from jazz to rap, with fun and creativity.
The Vindor ES1 uses a real mouthpiece so you get used to the feel of tonguing and modulating air flow. This makes the transition to and from a traditional instrument intuitive.
We're asking for your help to make the Vindor ES a reality. All the engineering has been completed and we have a final design. This design is fully-functional and has been tested by real users: kids, teenagers, adults and professional musicians.
We will use the funds raised to create tooling for injection molding and other custom molds for manufacturing the instrument. After this, we will order the electronic parts and the circuit boards.
Risks and challenges
Our team has built and delivered many products over the last 20 years. We have the passion, skills and focus to bring the Vindor ES1 into your hands.
By building working models of the instrument and testing them with beginners, high school students, jazz musicians, and music fans of all different ages and skills, we have tested the reliability of our design and our approach. However, turning even the best prototypes into a product is no easy task. We have to work with manufacturers who can produce the elongated PCB we require and the special touch buttons. The shell needs to be tooled and the whole product needs to be assembled in a reliable and consistent way. Any problem along the chain could delay our dream. Although we have allocated significant extra time for mishaps and missteps, it is still possible that additional delays might be needed to ensure we deliver a quality instrument.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
