About this project
Hello internet! My name is Matt MacCarthy and I am the Villain With a Thousand Faces. What that means is that I'm a huge storytelling/mythology dork who named my musical project after Joseph Campbell's "Hero With a Thousand Faces." My sentiment in so doing is to use my music as a medium for storytelling. However, my story is large, multifaceted, and has a rather ambitious literary and real-life counterpart.
Dreams have always been the most intriguing aspect of life to me because no one really knows what the hell they are, despite the fact that they hold an infinite potential for ideas and ANYTHING can appear in them, from Batman or Lord Voldemort to President Obama or Marilyn Manson... even dinosaurs! When I was growing up, I always thought there was something left out of the Bible: when did God give humans dreams? Why? And then I began to wonder if it was part of the reason we were made in God's image... what if it's because God dreams too? What would the Creator dream about? What would such a dream do to the universe? What if the Destroyer dreamed too?
With these ideas in my head, I had a dream of my own about a boy walking down a deserted highway hundreds of feet above a city blanketed in fog, his long billowing black robe whipping in the wind. In his hand was a disproportionately large weapon and, on his shoulder, a small rat. When I woke up, my imagination began to associate the fog in my dream as a symptom of the last great dream of the Destroyer. And somehow, I knew the boy's name was Greggory Blithe.
Greggory's story began as a quest of my own, to create an epic modern fantasy story that I would want to read myself. But in order for that to happen in a way that felt like a genuine journey into the shifting reality of dreams, I had to throw everything AND everything's mother in there. Secret societies, talking animals, banshees, phoenixes, gryphons, elves, prophets, gorgons, vampyres, dryads, goblins, angels, wizards, hebrew mythology, chinese mythology, hindu mythology, egyptian mythology, popular literature, tarot cards acting as Jungian archetypes... and a piece of a puzzle that will help Greggory save the world: THE MIRRORED GEM.
Then, when I began writing music, through all the piano melodies and synth drones and programmed beats and distorted guitars (all of which I do BY MYSELF, btw), Greggory's story began screaming through; foreshadows of things that Greggory won't face until a few books into the series surfaced in the lyrics and the music itself. In particular, the most essential part of his personal journey: the choice between destiny versus the will to follow your heart no matter the costs. And his actions could all be shifted from one to the other, if he could just find the answer to one question: WHAT IS THE HYDRA? The album eventually summed up the larger emotional story of Greggory who will be forced, sooner or later, to TAKE BACK THE NIGHT.
But for all my big ideas, I am not signed to a record label and do not have a publisher or an agent. In order for me to be able to put these narratives out into the world with a caliber of quality that I find satisfactory, I need a buttload more money. Both the album and the book are all written, but I've taken them as far as possible for one person. Now, they just need a few more things, but those things are expensive. THE MIRRORED GEM (the book) still needs editing, typesetting, formatting, illustration, package design, and probably even more editing. TAKE BACK THE NIGHT (the album) also needs package design, artwork, not to mention vocals, mixing, and mastering. WHAT IS THE HYDRA? (the real-time story event) has propaganda that needs printing, gps treasure hunts to deploy, flashmobs to assemble, prizes to award, and websites that need designing.
Since you probably don't know me from Adam, here's a FREE 10-song sampler of what I have of TAKE BACK THE NIGHT so far: (Psst... did I mention it's FREE?) It also includes several prologues and the first chapter of THE MIRRORED GEM, as well as some concept art for the story by some good friends of mine.
If you like what you hear, if you like what you read, if you like what you see, if you ever want to date me, please donate! Help me get the word out! Help me get this made!
Thank you so much for your support!
