About this project

Welcome to the Village of Legends

Village of Legends is a two to four player (6 player with expansion pack) deck building/dueling game where players choose a unique Hero and enhance them throughout the game by combining their individual skills with purchased items from the market including; weapons, spells, scrolls, treasures and more.

Players can also hire creatures to do their bidding and distract their opponents preventing them from accessing the market. By killing opponents' monsters Heroes gain experience points and learn new abilities by reaching defined XP levels becoming even more powerful.

VOL's first KS campaign has been canceled and we re-packaged the final product by combining the two expansions (The Horde and Ancient Guild) and putting them in the same box. These adjustments allowed us to lower our production price and as a result also reduce our funding goal. 

HEROES

At the beginning of each match players will have the choice of deciding on a Hero or selecting one at random. Each player will then place counters on their own hero: the health counter should be placed at maximum and the experience counter at 0 enabling the Hero to join the fray.

Each Hero has a unique skill set including an intelligence value, weapon bonuses and/or other abilities and weaknesses written on their sheets. 

During the match the players will also have the possibility to strengthen their hero by reaching defined Experience levels. When these levels are reached by killing wandering monsters the hero’s ability is automatically unlocked.

Buying and selling

In Village of legends each player starts with a deck of 10 cards (2 staffs and 8 coins) and in turns has the possibility to buy cards from the market.

Items with their price in a golden circle can also be sold from a player’s hand in exchange for half of the market value to be used to purchase other items when necessary.

Any sold items will be removed from the game and not put into the players discarded pile.

At the market you can find the following types of items:

When a weapon is played from a player’s hand the player rolls a die to see how much damage will be inflicted on the player to his left. The total amount of damage is the sum of the bonus indicated on the bottom left of each card plus the number which the die lands on. This damage can be used to defeat any or all of the enemy’s defenses, depending on the amount of damage (the attacking player decides how to distribute this damage before rolling the die) however, any remaining damage will not affect the character’s life points. Once any damage is inflicted on a character the counter must be moved accordingly keeping track of the life points (seen on the left hand side of the Hero’s sheet).

Any number of weapons can be deployed during a player’s turn repeating this method and inflicting damage (except for heavy weapons).

In addition, some weapons have secondary abilities, indicated on each card, which will take effect after the attack is concluded.

Heavy weapons are indicated by an anvil at the bottom right of the card e.g. the ’Giant axe’ and when played force the player to place all other weapons, both light and heavy, into the discarded pile. As opposed to light weapons remaining damage caused by heavy weapons is carried over and directly affects the life points of the defending player (to the left of the attacking player).

When a defence card is played from a player’s hand it must be placed on the table in front of them. This card will be placed into the discarded pile only when the sum of one or more attacks made in a single turn are equal to or more than the defense value indicated in the bottom left near a shield symbol. Any damage done during a single turn which is not sufficient to cause the defense card to be placed in the discarded pile will not be carried over to following turns.

Just like other items purchased, wandering monsters can be purchased and placed into the discarded pile. When drawn from the player's deck, these monsters can be placed in front of any opponent. At the beginning of that player's turn the player will be attacked by each monster they have in front of them. This monster will remain and attack at the beginning of each turn and block the player's access to the market until it is killed forcing the player to discard any available money.

If these wandering monsters are attacked by a Heavy weapon, any excess damage remaining after defeating all wandering monsters will be inflicted on the owner/owners of the monsters (at the attacking player’s discretion).

Experience points

When killed, each monster must be placed into the discarded pile of its owner.

By killing monsters a Hero can gain XP points and gain other abilities.

The XP gained by killing a monster is equal to the cost of that monster’s buying price and after killing each monster the counter must be moved accordingly along the XP bar found on the right hand side of the hero’s sheet.

Some Heroes have a level of intelligence which allows them to cast spells. Every spell has an intelligence cost in order to be played. Intelligence value of characters can be strengthened on each turn by using certain scrolls or magical items. The player must have enough intelligence points to play all of the spells they select from their hand in each turn.

Damage inflicted by spells follows the same rules as damage done by heavy weapons.

NB: on some spells the attacking player has the ability to choose the target for his attack when, and only when indicated on the card. The same rule applies for healing spells, which can only be used on another player when, and only when indicated on the card.

Roll a die when you play a Chest from your hand.

The Chest’s value is the number which the die lands on multiplied by 10. (If you play a ‘Treasure Chest’ add +2 to the roll).

Berserk!

Some Heroes have the ‘Berserker’ ability after having drunk the required number of beers in a single turn. This ability adds an attack bonus for a number of turns defined by rolling a die.

During these turns the ‘Berserker’ ability prevents the player from using the market by forcing them to discard all of their coins and cards related to the market e.g. ‘Smelt gold’.

NB: If any additional beer is drunk when a hero is already in Berserker mode it will only apply the effect noted on the card and will not prolong the Berserker period.

Two new Heroes join the fray: the Druid and the Cleric.

In this expansion box, we’ve added new mechanisms to the game that will diversify the battle ground and will also enable 6-player mode. Three Wolves and one Alpha Dog have been added to the Village of Legends bestiary. These Wild creatures can only be tamed and domesticated by only the wisest of masters.

Beware! These cunning animals will test their new owner’s intelligence, and if a Hero does not prove worthy the beasts will attack furiously!

Monsters! A big horde is coming from the south and you will face lots of angry creatures!

This rich expansion pack adds many brand new, never seen before cards which will reshape the battlefield.

The Heroes will have to fight against new monsters and creatures, however all is not lost, the gods have bestowed upon them many new strengthening powers and objects.

Along with the new creatures In this box you will find: invisibility potions, powerful weapons, dwarven beers, well forged shields, and of course, two new Heroes: the Slayer and the Thief (one of which will have unique abilities).

First 30 copies edition were printed in Italian, hand-numbered and completely sold out, thanks to all my friends and geeks from my city!

Other 40 boxes were printed and I'm here in Kickstarter to fund the first official release of Village of Legends.

Risks and challenges

As soon as our Kickstarter campaign finishes:
The first week we will send previews of game content and the Hero template file to all backers.
All rulebooks which are translated into chosen languages will become available for one week before going to print to allow users to highlight any grammar errors or disambiguation.
Following this we will send the final files to the printing company.

If you pledge €50 for the bundle including a hand inked illustration make sure to get in touch with us at least one month after the campaign ends to chose your illustration, otherwise we will have to chose one for you!

All additional stretch goal material has already been organized and factored into our project organization and will not affect shipment time.
We have already put into place solid distribution channels allowing us to send boxes in both Europe and the U.S.
VOL boxes will be packed in a shipment-friendly way with all the content well stored and organized.

We have left ample time for production so October gives us more than enough time to meet any demand and it's more than likely that your game will arrive before our set deadline.
