We made this 43-second thank-you video when we crossed the 100% threshold:
And we made this 2-minute thank-you video on the last night of our campaign:
We love to color. And we have two little girls who love to color.
So we're making a coloring book about one of our favorite places in the world:
Chincoteague Island, Virginia!
Why yes, we do! And we've unlocked them all!
So to recap and expand:
- ALL backers will get a digital (PDF) copy of the ENTIRE BOOK.
- We will be able to print our book on the heaviest paper we possibly can - uncoated 105lb stock - and have it perfect-bound instead of saddle-stitched.
- You will get +4 pages, making the book 36 pages total
- You will get a sticker sheet with 10 full-color, kiss-cut, Chincoteague stickers in each physical copy of the book!
- You will get +4 more pages (40 pages total).
- You will get +8 more pages, bringing the book to 48 pages!
Our backers rock!
If you have kids, you know: kids love to color! (Joanna draws pages for our girls all the time.)
And if you have an inner kid, you know: YOU love to color! Admit it: it's so relaxing. You're doing something with your hands, something creative and yet well-defined, and you get in this zone, this flow... it's so satisfying. Almost as good as a waffle cone from The Island Creamery.
And you don't need to be embarrassed: coloring for adults is having a renaissance right now! Color Me Chincoteague could be the next Secret Garden! Okay, maybe not that quite big, but the two artists do basically have the same first name…
Lots and lots of beautiful line art, just waiting for you to color!
These are the book’s specifications:
Size: 8 inches tall by 10 inches wide
Page count: Update! 48 pages!
Binding: Update! Perfect-bound!
Paper: 14pt cover paper, Update! 105lb inside paper!
Here’s what else will be in the book: your name! If you back us at the Maddox level ($19) or higher, we will thank you by name in a special thank-you illustration on the back inside cover of the book!
And at the Lighthouse and Beach levels, you and your friends or family can get drawn into the book as well! (More on that in the Rewards section.)
If you've never been to Chincoteague Island (pronounced SHING-kuh-teeg) or its beach, Assateague Island, you should add it to your bucket list. It's perhaps best known because of the book Misty of Chincoteague and the "Saltwater Cowboys" who round up wild ponies each July.
But Chincoteague is so much more! There's a growing foodie culture, an active arts community, and many quirky small businesses. We want to make a book that celebrates the people and places that make Chincoteague awesome.
And we grew up a half hour from Chincoteague, so we've forged many memories on the Island.
We need you: We’ve poured hundreds of hours and dollars into this book, but we can’t get it printed without your help.
We listen: We treat backers as collaborators—we really value your input, and we promptly and transparently address all questions and concerns.
You can make it better for everyone: The more backers we get, the bigger and better the book will be.
One more thing: we need your help to decide what scenes will end up in the book. So after you back us, go to colormechincoteague.com/vote and vote for your favorite places on Chincoteague. The polls will be open for the whole time our Kickstarter campaign is running.
Have fun coloring!

Risks and challenges
The main risk, as with most publishing projects, is delays in the production process. This is our second book, though, and we learned a lot the first time around!
Joanna's got a dozen pages done, and plans to finish the artwork in August and September. With another month for digitizing and layout and another month or two for printing and shipping, we're aiming to have the books in your hands by the winter holidays.
The key word here is "aiming." We will communicate clearly and openly with backer updates at least monthly until the rewards are in your hands.
The two exceptions to this timeline are the stickers and the bonus pages. We will ship the stickers in August, and we will send out the digital downloads as soon as the book has been laid out, probably in October.
UPDATE: This book has gotten BIG. For an updated timetable, see our backer update #12.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
