The Story So Far
I've been in Minnesota for slightly over a week. I've actually gotten used to the cold. The first few days it was kinda fun, like "Oooh there's snow everywhere. I can't feel my lips!" But the novelty has already worn off and it's more like "Yep...it's cold again. Let's just get this grocery trip over with."
We start filming tomorrow. Three full days Wed, Thu, & Fri and that's it. This last week consisted of having auditions and securing locations. Both are now set and I'm pleased with my findings. The cast is almost completely Duluthian. Some aren't even "actors." Just people who like the project and wanted to try out. Duluth, the town, was originally just the backdrop, but with the local actors and the locations, the town is becoming a character itself. In the end, it will be a very Duluth film that I think will speak to alot of people. Assuming of course, they can get past their hatred for the title.
The title however has given me the largest amount of press I've ever received for any project. I've in been in local papers, local news, blogs, and have done a bunch of interviews with more coming. I am in fact some sort of local celebrity here. Even if they don't know me, they know the project and their eyes light up when they find out, "I'm the guy." Someone even came up to me at dinner, just to say hello, shake my hand, and tell me they like my work. I could get used to this.
I've been writing a daily blog, http://duluthishorrible.blogspot.com/, which in itself has become a thing. It gets 3-400 views a day. I couldn't find a documentary crew to follow me around, so I've been writing it out. I'm enjoying writing it and it will be a nice compliment to the actual film. The whole time has been a new & rewarding experience for me and I thank everyone who contributed to it. I look forward to sharing the finished film with you. At least in Duluth, it's bigger than any 20 minute film about depressed people should be.
Lastly, I put together an unofficial soundtrack to the movie. The real soundtrack will be my original tunes, but these songs helped inspire me to begin with and reflect the mood of the film. It's kinda a bummer listen, but these songs are some of my all-time favorites. Enjoy. https://www.dropbox.com/s/5b9nzkagn1oa4ku/Duluth%20Is%20Horrible%20Unofficial%20Soundtrack.zip
