About this project
If you've watched the video, you know that I'm serious about creating an amazing Kung Fu action comic like no one has seen before. I've been fortunate enough to find excellent professionals who's passion is as strong as mine, now your money will make it all happen. Every reward level has great incentives, so please help fund this KickStarter project and claim yourself an exclusive reward.
What is 'Super Kung Fu Comic-Scoping'?
You may be familiar with traditional Rotoscoping, this is an animation technique where animators trace over video footage, frame by frame, for use in cartoons. I am taking this basic technique and expanding it to produce fast paced Kung Fu comic action. I've written a dynamic script for Zombies Hate Kung Fu, with gaps for the fight scenes. This is where Master Leo and Super Kung Fu Comic-Scoping come in:
1) Master Leo will study the script and use his Kung Fu knowledge and film choreography experience to design fight sequences to the quality of a hard-hitting Hong Kong blockbuster.
2) Zombies will be played by well padded extras, and Master Leo will personally act out the fight sequences while filmed from several angles.
3) Reviewing the recorded footage, Master Leo and I will pick out the key action images and storyboard the fight scene comic panels.
4) The storyboard work will go to the artist integrated with the final script, giving a mix of traditionally written comic script to be created, and annotated Super Kung Fu Comic-Scoped images to be accurately reproduced.
Making a final product that is the most electrifying, vibrant and realistic Kung Fu comic possible. This is what makes Zombies Hate Kung Fu the unique comic project that you need to back!
So what's the story?
The graphic novel I'm launching covers a self contained story, introducing a Kung Fu expert called Mann and a horticulturaly gifted slacker called Ziggy. The two form a unique partnership, combining their disparate skills and allowing them to thrive in the face of the zombie apocalypse. Mann and Ziggy's 'easy' life of growing, trading and fighting is suddenly disrupted when they run into a scientist who has her own theory on the origin of the 'zombies', and how to deal with them. Reluctantly, Mann and Ziggy get thrown into her adventure of scientific experiments and running battles with a mysterious band of heavily armed strangers.
I'm really excited about getting this comics story out there, it's packed with action and a new take on the zombie genre, if you want to read it, you need to back it.
Rewards! Rewards! Rewards!
I've put together a string of rewards for all budgets, shipping world wide and offering free postage to the USA, Canada, UK and Europe (if you need any clarification on this, just message me). All the rewards, listed to the right of your screen, will help me fund the project and your contribution is greatly appreciated. When the project is funded, I'll send a questionnaire around to get email addresses for the digital copies and postal addresses for the physical rewards. If you choose a t-shirt option, you get to chose from all the designs available, when the project ends. If you've chosen an art print you'll have a choice from 10 cool pages (including the covers) and people getting the rings will have the choice of small/medium/large sizes. If you go for the ZOMBIE REWARD or 'THE BAD GUYS' REWARD level, you or a willing nominee will be drawn in the graphic novel as a a comic character, and everyone will see you beaten up by the awesome power of Kung Fu.
Risks and challenges
There aren't really any risks for delivering this project once the money is pledged. I have the script, I have the art and Kung Fu choreography professionals waiting and eager to start work. I have printers and casters standing by. I am eagerly waiting to package up all the rewards and ship them off to the backers once the project is funded and all the work is done. The Kung Fu clips of Master Leo in my project video come from demonstrational videos which are available in full on his YouTube channel. Unfortunately for copyright reasons I am unable to use footage from the Hong Kong cinema which he has worked on.
Master Leo most recently worked as a choreographer on the Hong Kong film 'Ip Man: The Final Fight' ( 葉問：終極一戰 ) 2013, which he also has an on screen cameo in.
As a specialist in the Kung Fu style of Wing Chun, Master Leo has primarily been involved with the making of martial arts films that focus on the life of Grandmaster Ip Man, who popularised Wing Chun globally and is also famous as being the Kung Fu teacher of Bruce Lee.
Selected Master Leo 'behind the camera' filmography:
- 'Ip Man' ( 葉問 ) 2008.
- 'Ip Man 2' ( 葉問2:宗師傳奇 ) 2010.
- 'The Legend Is Born – Ip Man' (葉問前傳 ) 2010.
Ip Man 1 & 2 both won 'Best Fight Choreography' at Hong Kong Film Awards, while the 2008 film also won 'Best Film' and is currently listed on IMDB.com top 250 films of all time.
1) This is set a few years AFTER a zombie uprising, so guns and ammo are hard to find.
2) They aren't trained with guns, and despite what the films tell you, guns aren't that easy to use safely and effectively.
3) Gunfire attracts more zombies, or worse, other human survivors whop want to steal your precious food and guns.
I think these are pretty much standard zombies. Probably a little quicker than most, like what you've seen in something like The Walking Dead TV series. But they're not 'soft' like in some zombie fiction, where you can stab anything right through their head with no effort at all. These are strong, tough zombies, that's why bone crunching Kung Fu skills are needed to defeat them.
Zombies are particularly susceptible to Kung Fu as many techniques use an opponents force and rigidity against them, and this is what you get from zombies, they come charging right at you!
As usual, Zombie blood turns you into a zombie, so you may have noticed that Mann wears blue rubber gloves to fight, this is to help prevent zombie blood infecting him.
- The Walking Dead #103
- Wolverine #1 (Limited Series 1982, Frank Miller)
- Batman Annual 2 (New 52)
- A trade paperback of Watchmen.
I spent all of five minutes selecting these, it wasn't some masterplan.
Because I'm not a celebrity.
And even if I were, I don't think its nice to charge people for your signature. If you really want me to sign your book, I'm happy to do so, just ask. (This isn't meant as a criticism of other KickStarter creators that charge extra for signed copies of their work, that is their choice)
Increase your pledge by £16, whatever package you've selected, and I'll send you two copies.
Follow up question: Where do I do that?
Answer: Just to the right of the project video at the top of the page will be a blue box that says 'Manage your pledge', click on that, then you go through to a screen with your pledged amount in green, edit this by adding £16 to the amount, then click 'continue to next step', and then you will be asked to confirm that you want to increase your pledge. You may be asked to 'sign in' at some stage if you aren't already signed in to KickStarer. Any problems, let me know.
You can do this when you initially back.
