About the Guide Book
Power Players Unofficial NES Collectors Guide Book is a book meant for beginner and experienced game collectors.
This guide will help collectors like yourself track and manage an NES game collection and keep you informed when shopping at your local retail store by maximizing your trade-in values and minimizing your expenses.
The book is jam packed with information that any game collector would need to help them on their journey to completing or customizing an NES game collection and will include all 677 licensed NTSC USA game titles, 91 unlicensed games, the two Nintendo World Championships cartridges, and the 9 Nintendo Service Center test cartridges, the entire PAL Unlicensed library, Sachen games and variants, and so much more!
This book was also designed with complete-in-box collectors in mind and at 5" x 7" it will fit in nicely with your boxed NES game collection.
How To Use the Guide Book
As seen in the above image, at a glance it is easy to tell whether a game is common, rare, or anywhere in between. We've made it simple to find a game by including the games title, box art, cartridge art, and the following information:
- Checklist (Cartridge, Instructions, Box)
- Price You Paid
- Maximum Retail "Pay" Price - Loose & Complete
- Minimum Retail "Trade-In" Price - Loose & Complete
- General Rarity
- Screw Variants & Relative Rarity
- Unique Variants & Relative Rarity
- Game Publisher
- Game Rating
This book is not intended to be used while shopping online on websites such as eBay. Instead, we designed this book to be taken with you when shopping at your local retro gaming store and cross referencing our prices with your stores prices.
The guide will not only maximize your trade-ins by letting you know what you have, but it will also minimize the amount of money you will spend at a retail store by letting you know the maximum price you should pay for a game to know you're getting a good value.
If you're looking to get prices for games while shopping online, please refer to our friends over at gamevaluenow.com or pricecharting.com.
1. NES Library Section, Subsection, and Alphabetical Area
2. Game Boxart & Cartridge Art
From left to right you have the cartridge, then the manual, and then the games box. Check off each item you have to keep track of your collection.
4. Game Title
5. Price You Paid
6. Loose & Complete Price
On the top (Larger text) is the maximum price you should expect to pay at a retail store before it's worth it to wait for the price to go down, or to just buy it online. On the bottom (smaller text) we show you the minimum you should accept for your trade-ins, anything above those prices are fair value.
7. General Rarity
This is the general rarity of a game at a local retro game store. Our rarity scale is shown below.
8. Screw Variants & Relative Rarity
These sought after variants are typically all within range of each other, but for some games like Mega Man 1, the 5-screw version might be a holy grail level item, while the 3-screw version might be a common item. They are color coded using the same color coding from the rarity scale.
3S is short for 3-Screw
5S is short for a 5-Screw cartridge with a "No Cardboard Hangtab" box, usually denoted on the front by having no "REV-A" symbol (with exceptions)
5S HT is short for a 5-Screw cartridge with a cardboard hangtab box. These are usually the most desired collectibles.
9. Unique / Special Variants & Relative Rarity
Sometimes a publisher changes the artwork of a box (e.g. Gun.Smoke), re-releases a game (e.g. Grey Legend of Zelda cartridge), or screws up (e.g. Black Bass w/ No Top Label on Box) in a way significant enough that it's worth collecting these things as a separate item. We will list each and every one we know of and include the relative rarity using the same color coded rarity scale.
Please take a moment to look at the provided sample below. It demonstrates the first few pages of the book, as well as shows how the book lists the unlicensed game library, by publisher.
10. Game Publisher & Game Rating
Who released the game is an important factor when collecting games. How well they play is also a major component for most collectors. We've analyzed all of the NES library and included an easy to understand 5 star system to help you on your adventure.
Below are some images of what the books contents look like.
We want to include everything we've prepared in this book, but in order to do so we need some massive funds to bring the cost of printing down. Depending on how much interest we get from this project we can include over double the amount of content.
At $4,000 the standard goal will include the following:
- 677 NTSC USA Licensed Games
- 91 USA Unlicensed Games

Our $4,000 goal is only enough to get this book printed, and into a select few peoples hands. It'll also provide us with enough left over copies to sell them ourselves on our website nintendochecklist.com (coming soon)
Right off the bat, Kickstarter will absorb about 10% of the funds.
Printing will cost will take around 65% of the funds, and shipping from China to New Jersey will take another 20%.
The remainder is going to repay costs of production, domains names, and other minor costs.
Power Players doesn't just stop at this guide book. We hope that this Kickstarter meets our true expectations as we intend to create periodic updates to this collectors guide.
We envision printing updates to this book every year, and depending on how successful we might be able to print updated twice yearly, and even quarterly (at a significant price discount)
We also have a second book title in the works for 2 years now titled Power Players Magazine Volume 1: NES and will be featuring it right here on Kickstarter once we wrap up production and distribution of this kickstarter.
We hope you stay updated with us as things develop.

Risks and challenges
Barring any stretch goals, the book is already complete and ready for press. The only delays we can envision are delays at press, the unlocking of any stretch goals that are not fully prepared yet, and time to fulfill the orders.
The "Homebrews" stretch goal is being compiled by a third party and may eventually be cut from the book if the material is not received in a timely manner.
We anticipate a smooth launch but are readily prepared to provide support if you are unhappy with your order.
Power Players if fully independent and is in no way, shape, or form affiliated with the companies listed within the book or promotional material. The book is an unofficial collectors guide and is not affiliated with Nintendo in any way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
