PhORM is a construction kit for your camera. With it you can create and build a rigging solution for any situation. Made from aircraft-grade aluminium, PhORM is strong and, thanks to it's anodised finish, also durable.
We developed PhORM to solve the problem of camera rigging around our workshop and soon realised that it could be more useful and versatile for people in a similar situation.
Like many people just starting out with filming, we didn’t know what rigging equipment we needed until we came to capturing video and then it was too late.
We created PhORM so you can build anything to suit any situation.
PhORM is a combination of "Photography & Form" so a PhORM is a structure created for use with cameras. Whether you are trying to capture video or photos, due to the adaptable nature of the system there will be a PhORM for you! Think of it like building blocks for your camera and get creative like in the examples below. We will be building an online resource to demonstrate all the possibilities with PhORM and what can be built.
PhORM was designed around idea that it had to be easy to put together and with the parts laid out on the table you could almost see the PhORM before you had built it. Our parts are precision machined to fit together and use simple fasteners so you can construct quickly and rebuild just as fast. With the addition of some basic camera accessories you have an extremely versatile system in your hands.
Watch the videos below for just a few of the many possibilities using PhORM
Large Camera Frame
Scorpion Cage - Action cam / Smarphone
Super Simple Tripod
Small Mag Bar
Single Mag Foot
With PhORM you can create structures which are static, like a frame, or dynamic, like a slider, but because of the way our bars are designed you can simply add motion components to a static structure to make it dynamic.
For example, build a compact frame and add wheels and you instantly have a hand held camera frame that doubles as a dolly. Why not use whats around you as a platform to film, a handrail instantly becomes a slider with PhORM.
Our kits are made up for a few key parts - we don't have thousands of different part sizes because, lets face it, when you have loads of different parts there are always some that never get used. We designed PhORM to have the bare minimum of different parts and tried to make each one super useful. All of our threaded holes and fasteners are 1/4-20 UNC which means that they will fit most camera accessories.
Phorm kits comprise of:
- 180mm PhORM bars - featured in all kit sizes
- 300mm PhORM bars - Foundation Plus only
- 90 Degree Bends - featured in all kit sizes
- PhORM Fasteners - featured in all kit sizes
- PhORM Nuts - featured in all kit sizes
- Carbon Handles - Foundation & Foundation Plus
- Mag Feet - (Magnetic feet) - featured in all kits
- 3D Grips - (3D Printed ABS grips) - featured in all kits
- Small wheels - Foundation
- Large wheels - Foundation Plus only
- Storage case - Foundation & Foundation Plus
PhORM bars are manufactured from billet aluminium (6082 grade for those who are interested). Simply put, its strong and lightweight. The bars are finished with a durable anodised coating which will protect them in the long-term.
PhORM bars are anodised to protect the surface from damage and corrosion as well as making them look pretty cool! Most of our prototypes on here are clear anodised, we are hoping to have the final product in a black anodised finish with the possibility of the fasteners in red. Below is an example of what this might look like.
We have 3 sizes of kit which are available through this Kickstarter. Each one has number of PhORMs that can be constructed from them. PhORM is a construction kit so you can be as creative as you like and build your very own PhORM.
PhORM Compact - approx 20 PhORMs
3 x 180mm bars, 3 x 90 degree bends, 10 x PhORM Fasteners, 10 x PhORM Nuts, 2 x 3D Printed Grips, 2 x Magnetic feet

4 x 180mm bars, 6 x 90 degree bends, 20 x PhORM Fasteners, 20 x PhORM Nuts, 2 x 3D Printed Grips, 4 x Magnetic feet, 2 x carbon handles, 4 x 22mm wheels, 1 x Hard case
PhORM Foundation Plus - approx 55 PhORMs
4 x 300mm bars, 4 x 180mm bars, 7 x 90 degree bends, 25 x PhORM Fasteners, 25 x PhORM Nuts, 4 x 3D Printed Grips, 4 x Magnetic feet, 2 x carbon handles, 4 x 40mm wheels, 1 x Hard case
We are proud to be manufacturing PhORM right here in the UK. We use our in-house machining facilities to take the raw materials from stock to the finished part. Anodising is outsourced locally and we have picked the best team of experienced finishers so that PhORM parts look the business too.
We wanted to start to document what we were doing in our workshop and to get closer to our machines with cameras. Unfortunately tripods were not ideal for the setup we had and our machines are enclosed. So after coming up with a basic piece of metal with some magnets and tapped holes which held an action camera and a light PhORM was born, but we did not know it at this point. As we did more to this bar we realised it was actually very useful and after looking at other offerings on the market we found there wasn't really anything quite like PhORM.
We have spent the last 18 months developing PhORM, from laser cut plastic and 3D printed test parts we have finally settled on the design you now see. We have tried all sorts of possible combinations of these parts to make sure they are as versatile as possible.
We have used 3D printing to develop PhORM products, we even use it to produce some of the kit components. Whilst we were talking to people about PhORM we came up with an idea. We would like to try and create an online catalogue of 3D-printable designs where you will be able to download free, useful add-ons to your PhORM kit and print them for yourself. Need some extra mag feet? Just print them! And if you have some ideas of your own then you will be able to upload them and share them with the PhORM Community.
We are excited about the future for PhORM, we are already planning some extensions to the system to expand your kits further, and we have some really interesting possibilities for PhORM going forward. We want to continue to develop this system and provide a platform for creatives to capture more.
We’re a small prototyping company that wants to bring a high quality and affordable product to market. We have created a fully functional prototype and have spent the last several months putting it through its paces.
Now we need to manufacture our parts on a larger scale, this requires us to purchase dedicated tooling for our machines and to manufacture production plates for us to be able to produce more than one part at a time. We believe in PhORM and what it can do and know that once it exists as a product in customers hands, we can gain even more momentum and make it even better.
With your support, we will have the chance to turn our hard work into the tools for others to be able create more.
We will do three things:
- Order tooling specific to PhORM production resulting in faster machining and better part finish.
- Manufacture specific production plates for each of our parts to allow us to be able to machine multiple PhORM components rather than one piece at a time.
- Begin to develop our online 3D print resource for free downloads to expand your system further.
We have been working on PhORM for over a year. Our final prototypes have been in testing for the last few months, and are we confident in our design...YES! We are discussing finishing options with our anodiser as mentioned above but the design will stay the same.
After the Kickstarter is funded we will be straight into manufacturing our production plates and testing them out to ensure we are getting the results we need.
We’ll begin shipping PhORM kits in December 2019. All of our material sourcing has been lined up, but we need to place final orders for everything else. Production of PhORM kits will be completed here in the UK.
Please note that shipping is not included in reward prices. We have tried to keep the shipping costs as low as possible to include packaging so your rewards reach you in perfect condition. Our shipping fees do not include customs duty fees or VAT that may be applied if ordering from outside the UK, if this is the case it would be advisable to check what fees may need to be paid for the goods on entry to your country prior to making a pledge.
We (Francis & Chris) have known each other for nearly 20 years.
Francis has been working in bespoke manufacturing since 2003 when he started a drum manufacturing business, honing his design skills and getting hands on with CNC technology and hand crafting one off products.
Chris has worked in Micro-electronics design and programming for nearly 2 decades and during this time has gain great experience in project management having worked on many high level projects with tight deadlines.
This has resulted in us forming "Van Fett Industries" to help people develop their ideas from the design board to a working prototype. This is not the first project we have run together and have worked on everything from custom motorcycles to wireless sensors for bell ringers!
From our workshop in the Nottinghamshire countryside we are developing PhORM and we hope that you can see the potential this system has and will come along for the ride, Thank you.
Risks and challenges
We have sourced high-quality materials from which to create PhORM, and we are using our in house manufacturing to produce the product, We are outsourcing our anodising with a company in which we have the utmost confidence. Unforeseen challenges can occur, of course, but we have done our best to mitigate the risks. If anything happens that threatens timely delivery of our contributor rewards, we will be sure to keep everyone in the loop – putting honesty above all other considerations.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
