What is Vessels VR?
A virtual reality educational experience. Vessels is designed for elementary school students learning about human organ systems. The experience intends to educate the user about the circulatory system in a fun and engaging way. The experience is being produced as a research project out Ryerson University's RTA School of Media and Transmedia Zone.
Vessels VR will be developed using both models of the Oculus Rift development kit, and will be assembled in Unity 3D a powerful game engine/ development environment.
The Virtual Field Trip
School boards across the country have always considered the “field trip” an important part of the learning experience. A practical method of digesting theoretical content, many studies have shown that people form better memories through real life experiences and interactions, rather than reading about them from a piece of paper. We believe that this is a cue for virtual reality. We want to take you where no school bus can go (except the magic school bus) INSIDE the human Body.
Our mission is to challenge the ways in which we digest educational content. Vessels is a pioneer application in what we believe will eventually become an entire market of educational content for the burgeoning virtual reality industry. Although VR technology gaming community has most fervently embraced this new technology, it doesn’t take much to imagine how it might revolutionize other content-based industries, including the educational industry.

It takes a lot of computing power to render high quality 3D images, and although we have excellent facilities at the University, we need that extra push to build a fully functional Virtual reality lab for development and testing. One of the greatest costs is that of a graphics processing unit. It must be top notch to render out the entire experience.
Testing with Focus Groups
As mentioned in the mission statement, we want to introduce a new way to digest educational content, and we're focusing on children. In order to do this we must finance marketing studies and focus groups that may very well provide a lot of important details about the future of educational VR content.

Risks and challenges
Our main challenge is of course the reason we are on Kickstarter in the first place, funding.
There's currently a very limited market for virtual reality experiences, it is difficult to get the funding we need to complete Vessels. We need to rely on other developers and enthusiasts at this point.
