About

The Story

It is late autumn in the 2040th year of the 6th Era. Centuries ago, the worship of the Seven Divines was restored and peace was established between the tribes. But the peace was not to last.

As winter approaches, the peaceful Alkimites store away their plows for an early and unnatural chill. But away to the south, the Traitor Drystan is leading Lord Derek and the warlike Leonites against the heirs of the Fylscem Empire, which fell at the beginning of the 6th Era. Now united with the Ferites, another tribe of fierce warriors, Derek’s armies have become the Chimaera Regiment. The warlord has already eliminated five of his six rivals for the throne. The Chimaera Regiment is fifty days’ march from the Valley of Kyros, home of the Alkimites.

Threatened with war, the Alkimites must prepare themselves. Alone, the Valley cannot stand against Derek’s forces, so the Guardian Aneirin must lead his surviving brothers north to raise more armies from neighboring tribes. Meanwhile, two Alkimite warriors travel south to infiltrate the Chimaera Regiment and learn all they can of Derek’s plans.

Young Hector of the Alkimites, heir of Fylscea and Derek’s last rival, must travel east. He has been directed by Aneirin and is accompanied by three friends. He seeks an ancient monument, which bears instructions to find the Blessed Blades of the Emperor. Agents of the Chimaera Regiment pursue him and danger stands before him, but he must persevere. Only with the Seven Divines at his back and the power of the Blades at his side can he defeat Derek and stop the encroaching darkness!

Origins

I've always been an avid reader, and I've wanted to write ever since I first picked up a book. I wrote fan stories, then short stories, and then, finally, I began plans for various novels... but only one came to fruition in my younger days. I came up with the initial idea for this novel five and a half years ago, when I was nothing but a lonely freshman in college. I spent about a year and a half writing the first draft.

Then I sorta forgot about it.

I edited little bits of it from time to time, but it was almost always on the backburner throughout college,* as I got married, and as I started my first job. I had high hopes of completing the novel that first year, but as it happened, I was a high school teacher.

If you've ever been a high school teacher, you know why there was no chance at all that I would finish this novel. I was simply too busy. I barely got any sleep. And I've been told that, as first years go, mine was among the worst. I really don't have the qualifications to judge that myself, but at this point, it's moot. Moving on.

* I double-majored in Classical Philology and Religious Studies. You know who else majored in Classics? J. K. Rowling. I can't quite recall, but I think she's published a book. Maybe several. I'm not saying that J. K. Rowling and I are equals. Far from it. For example, my Latin is better. Also, she has written a beloved series of books that I shouldn't malign or someone might hurt me.

Editing

But then I quit being a high school teacher and became a marketing consultant. In my free time (of which there was suddenly much), I wrote and published three prayer books.

But even more importantly, I've completed the first stage of editing my novel. It needed a new title, of course, because Matt Damon made a movie using my old title between the first draft and now. It also needed some hefty rewrites and a little restructuring, which are already well underway.

Stage 2 editing has begun. All remaining rewriting, clarification, restructuring, ordering, and the removal of typographical errors is being finalized and will be complete at approximately the same time as this fundraiser.

The Future of the Project

What comes next? The release. This release is special. It started with an idea my father had for an interactive release. With this system, people could offer comments and questions about the story. If they noticed an inconsistency (or raised a question that I never answered), I could answer it for them, either directly among the comments or through a tweak in the book.

The system, as you may have noticed from the various descriptions of this project, is a weekly audio blog release. I read a chapter, maybe two, depending on the length. I record myself reading. I put it online for people to listen to. Then they have to wait a week - a woeful, daunting week full of suspense - to hear what happens next. Think of it like a radio drama in the modern age.

Also, there aren't any actors. Unless you count me. I had several leading roles when I was younger. And I have an exquisite reading voice. Or so I've been told.

What I Need

Here's why you should back this project: it's awesome! Really, it is. But I need money to increase its awesomeness even further.

Because I need, first of all, voice recording equipment and audio editing software. It's not overly expensive, but it's not exactly cheap, either.

I also need an awesome book cover. I have several options available to me, but they all cost money, because I can't draw. Or paint. Or sculpt. Or take photos. Or arrange photos with expensive image editing software into an awesome book cover. That's why I'm a writer. I write.

Finally... I've grown accustomed to eating and breathing. Don't make me stop. It's not healthsome.

Who's Involved?

First of all, there's me. You've probably heard about me. You've probably watched the fancy video up at the top. There's also the "about me" kind of stuff that's available all over this project.

Second, there's my father, Art Turner. He's a musician. Especially on the piano. The music I'll be using in the audiobook is his (written, performed, etc.). He's good at it. Everyone says.

There's also my wife, other relatives, friends, and colleagues who've assisted in the editing process.

Conclusion

And there you have the project of "The Chimaera Regiment." The conclusion of the fundraising is to give me enough time to release the first episode on Thursday, March 15, 2012. The delivery estimate on the rewards is intended to coincide with the conclusion of the weekly podcast, but I will endeavor to send them out earlier if possible.

Everything is close. But the success of this work hinges upon the support of others. Plus, if you do back this project, you get neat keepsakes with my John Hancock on 'em. Or my digital John Hancock, as the case may be.
