What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Does this look familiar?

Cable tidies exist, yes. But they can take too long to use and be fiddly too, so most people don't bother.

mobu does away with cable tangling with style and speed. Snap together to store, pull apart to use. It's that simple!

Want to feature our story? Click HERE and you'll find everything you need - logos, high resolution images etc. Need anything else? Drop us an email to press@version22.com.

mobu can help you stay organised wherever you are.

Did you know mobu uses mathematical theory to prevent tangling?

When thrown around, strings tend to form coils and the loose ends will weave between the other strands, a lot like braiding or weaving.

When performing experiments in which a string is tumbled inside a box, it's found that complex knots can often form within seconds!

The Geeky Bit...

The relative probability of forming a knot can be determined by minimum crossing number, mathematical measures of knot complexity and möbius energy. (This is where mobu's name comes from!)

One of the ways in which you can drastically reduce the chance of knotting occurring, is by tying the ends of a long piece of string (or cable) together. Though tangling may still occur, pulling the two ends apart will unravel anything that managed to tie together.

Neat, hey?

1. Easily adapts to different cable sizes

mobu's patent pending design allows it to clips to any cable size from super-skinny to really thick (4mm), in a really simple way...

Large: USB cables with thicker insulation (e.g. fast charging USB-C cables), braided USB cables

Medium: Apple Lightning cable & Magsafe, standard micro/mini USB cables, standard USB-C cables

Small: Apple earphones, Beats earphones/headphones, all other non-braided earphones/headphones

2. Store & access your cables quicker

As there is no winding or wrapping required it's much easier to store your cables if you're in a hurry. Just snap them together and bundle them away!

Equally when taking your cables out there's no need for unwinding or unwrapping, just pull the mobu clips apart.

 3. Easily identify cables

Got one black USB-C and one black micro-USB cable in your bag? Connect different coloured mobu clips to each and you'll never mix them up again.

4. Supercharge mobu with mobu connect

mobu connect (an optional add-on for £3) allows you to stay even more organised around the home or office.

With mobu connect you can stop laptop chargers slipping off the edge of the desk when unplugged, and always have a charger cable to hand for your different devices.

The colour of mobu connect is subject to change (it will likely white)
The colour of mobu connect is subject to change (it will likely white)

Each pack comes with 6 mobus! We recommend that you clip on a mobu to every cable end, so that means 3 mobus for earphones or 2 for a phone charger cable.

mobu comes in 3 colours - burnt redblack, and white. You don't have to choose your colour(s) until after the campaign.

Colours may vary slightly from the prototypes shown

No need to choose colours when you pledge

Once we are fully-funded and the campaign comes to a close, we will be sending out backer surveys to collect your colour choices - no need to worry about that now.

Our project timeline began earlier this year, but here's an outline of all the fun stuff coming up.

FYI: This is an expected timeline. If you have any questions about it, please see below in the Risks & Challenges section.

The final design for mobu was perfected after dozens of prototypes of different shapes, gripping methods and materials had been made and tested. A few of our favourites are shown below.

mobu's development journey

We used our handy 3D printer (and lots of trial an error!) to reach a design we think does the job juuuuust right.

Some of the MANY mobu prototypes made along the way

Here's a breakdown of how the £10,000 we're raising will be spent.

We've committed to paying for the first half of the tooling to make sure this project is underway as soon as possible, yet we need a little help with the second half, which is due when the tooling is complete.

After two other success Kickstarter projects, we're expecting shipping to make up around 20% of the total costs.

This is the money that's needed to actually get mobu produced. We need to meet the factory's minimum order quantity to start production.

Kickstarter's Project Fees are made up of 2 types - Kickstarter Fees which are a fixed 5% fee on whatever we earn, as well as card fees which can range from 2-5% of a single transaction.

The remainder of the money will be going on the final development of the project. This includes getting final prototypes produced and tested, any unforeseen fees.

There's a lot of work that goes behind a Kickstarter project, and this one wouldn't be anything without the following people.

Risks and challenges

This isn’t our first Kickstarter rodeo, and even though we’ve outlined some potential problems before in our previous projects, we thought it might be better for you (our Backers) to know a little more detail about the complexity of manufacturing and the associated risks with backing a project on Kickstarter.

We’ve brought products to market before, and each time we followed pretty much the same process. They have all generally included product research, design & development, tooling, prototyping, manufacturing, dispatch and fulfillment. As you can imagine, we at Version 22 can’t complete everything by ourselves! So we have to rely on trusted partners outside of the business, and while everything is under a high level of control, not everything can be estimated or calculated correctly before the project even starts. We can’t 100% predict the future and foresee everything that might occur.

Whilst we do have a lot of experience in this process already, here are some potential causes for delays to this project:

---

1) Tooling

Everything up until this point has already been completed (product research and design & development), so we’re 100% done on that front. Tooling is the next item on the list, which is what is needed to create the moulds for mobu to be manufactured. mobu will be made via injection mould, which means that a sort of case will be created for liquid plastic to be injected into, and once dry, the product(s) will be taken out to be put on the assembly line.

We paid for the tooling to begin and sent all the files necessary for the moulds back in mid-september, and at the time of writing, we’re now expecting the moulds to be constructed and the machines to be setup to properly inject material.

Instead of speaking directly with the manufacturers in China, we’re working with a "middle-man" company to help us coordinate things as effectively as possible and ensure we get high quality products off the production line. It should be noted that we’ve essentially swapped swift communication with quality assurance here, so we may get some unanticipated delays (but the trade-off is worth it).

---

2) Prototyping

Once the moulds in China have been made, we will request prototypes from these moulds to be produced. This is where we personally quality control the product before we go ahead with the final production run. If there’s something not quite right with mobu, we will have to communicate with the manufacturers to make adjustments to the tooling. How close they get the mould the first time will either have us ahead of schedule, or potentially delay the production of mobu.

We already had some prototypes made in the UK (as seen in the campaign video), and although their quality was quite high, their cost was several times higher than getting them made in China. This would mean us increasing the retail cost of the product by quite a large amount.

---

3) Manufacturing

This part comes once we sign off the prototype production at a very high standard. We will let them know how many units we want to order and the manufacturers will work out how long it will take to produce them. We will be put into a production slot that fits their production schedule (manufacturers are busy companies). The manufacturing timeline will depend on how quickly they can begin production, and how many products we order, so if this project becomes super successful, we might see a slight increase to the production time.

---

4) Dispatch

When production has finished, mobu will be packaged up and sorted onto pallets ready to be shipped out. We will be flying mobu from China to the UK, where it will reach our fulfilment facility in Manchester. mobu will be flying from one side of the planet to another, so things like flight delays and weather conditions could be the culprit of things getting delayed here.

Once mobu arrives in the UK, it will have to pass through customs. Now, it usually takes just a few days to have everything checked, but we’ve been stung once in the past by having to wait 3 weeks for this part of the process!

---

5) Fulfilment

This is the final stage (and most exciting stage for everyone). Once mobu has landed in the UK we'll send all order info over to our fulfilment team Collext, so they can pack and dispatch all orders worldwide.

The order of fulfilment will be determined once all information has been passed to Collext. The complexity of your order (number of items and number or different items in one package), the destination, and whether backers provide/confirm their addresses in time will determine when exactly your package will arrive. There have been occasional postal strikes in the UK during the past couple of years, so please be prepared that we may have to face one of these around the holiday period in December/ January.

---

Every business here on Kickstarter will face these challenges in some way or another, and rarely backers will see them before donating. Project delays can happen for a number of reasons. Sometimes project creators hit unexpected roadblocks while they’re working on their project, or underestimate how much time it takes to complete a project and fulfill rewards.

We are expected by Kickstarter to communicate these setbacks and keep you in the loop along the way. So if you have any questions, please be sure to check out the project’s FAQs or the Updates section for more up to date information. If you still can’t find the answer to your question anywhere, shoot us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can - your question might even end up on our FAQ page!

In the interest of transparency, and understanding that you as our backers have the right to know the position of the product you have essentially donated for - we will provide you with as much information as possible to keep you in the loop of our project. If we haven’t posted an update in a while and you have some questions, you can send us a message to check in and see how things are going.
