Here's what they're saying about Lumia:
Yanko Design - From wine to light.
Home Crux - "A classy LED Lamp"
Gear Hungry - "..one of the most unique desk lamps we’ve yet to come across."
Made from retired wine barrels, Lumia is an LED desk lamp that combines LED lighting with a unique fully adjustable dual pivot arm. This lamp is truly functional art that's Made In USA.
Lumia is the term coined by 20th Century Artist Thomas Wilfred to refer to art created from light. He coined the term "lumia" to describe "an eighth art" where light would stand on its own as an expressive art form.
From Wine Barrel to Light
Like you, we love a good story. We look for quality in the things we surround ourselves with. We make things. The thing is - nearly 200,000 wine barrels are retired each year in California. Although some end up as planters or firewood, many are destined for landfills. We decided to do something about that. We rescue wine barrels from wineries that simply don't have the space to keep them any longer. We then give them new life - in this instance the design is not only a beautiful but practical table lamp but also a functional work of art. Each barrel stave holds it's own history and nuances meaning no lamp will be exactly the same keeping the integrity of the wood. It's a wonderful way to display the barrel stave and appreciate it's history.
How Does It Work?
We have a firm design and what you see is a functional prototype ready to launch into full production with your support.
First, the light consists of 24 super bright LEDs that are fixed in a channel centered under the top stave.
The joints and arms are precision sculpted milled aluminum arms. The dual pivot arm allows a large range of movement. The balls used for the joints are solid maple sourced from Maine. The special wire coil between the pivot arms allows the light to move in various angles without strain or stretching. There's an adjustment knob that can be tightened to securely hold the lamp in the position that you adjusted it to.
Sometimes super bright light is not needed so we included a touch off/on dimmer switch. Also included is a 12V Transformer and hidden battery pack. Another unique feature of this light is its portability as a wall outlet isn't needed, Just detach the transformer and place outside or in a place that doesn't have a wall outlet.
Quality Materials: Made in USA
Finished wine barrel staves, sculpted milled aluminum arms, maple wood balls from Maine for the joints and LED on/off LED dimmer touch switch are all incorporated into Lumia. We are committed and proud to handcraft this lamp in California.
Base varies 16"-14" x 5-1/2 - 7" • Lamp 34"-31"x3 • Weight approx 6 lbs. • Sculpted milled aluminum arm • 24 high output LEDs • 8AAA battery pack • 12V wall transformer • Touch on/off dimmer switch • 24 Super Bright LEDs
All pieces are created by hand, so no two items are identical. The base of the light reflects a section of the wine barrel with its tapered staves and side by side contact of the staves and reflects slight variances in colors and stave sizes from what is shown in the made to order photos. That's the beauty of the product!
How the funds will be used:
With your help to complete the project all funds will go directly towards the development and manufacturing of Lumia including:
•Sanding staves by hand is time consuming. We are in the process of designing a machine to speed this process up. Staves are complicated because they have compound curve (curved in both directions).
•Develop a jig for grooving the staves for the LED strips. Again, it is not an easy task because of the compound curve.
•Funds to complete the CNC programming and production of the pivot arms.
•Buying components and materials
All of the design work has been completed by me in California. The manufacturing work will be handled by my experienced team here in Healdsburg, CA, led by me. The target delivery is November 2013. I'll update you on the progress as we hit our milestones.
I'm very excited about producing this lamp in California while having you appreciate its history. Designing products is my passion. Please share our project with your friends. We proud to say MADE IN USA!
Thank you and thank you for sharing our project!
We'll ship in Fall 2103. Here's our schedule for the delivery of Lumia:
- September: Make final refinements,
- October: Order first batch of arm components
- November: Begin assembly of first batch
- November: Ship out first batch
And check it out! A cool chart provided by CanHeKickIt! Everybody loves charts.
Risks and challenges
If there weren't any risks, it wouldn't be novel, original or any fun.
Moving from prototype to production is rarely easy but having the experience of bringing projects to production is not new to me. Doing this for the first time is always filled with unknowns, fortunately this is not my first time. I have built trust over the last 30 years working with reliable partners that deliver. We would rather have the chance to deliver your Lumia earlier rather than later.
I am targeting delivery for November which allows us some time from when the project ends, funds are delivered and components ordered. I'd rather be honest from the start rather than annoying everyone with delays.
If you're in doubt drop me an email, I'll answer your questions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
