We are creating an illustrated book for writers of all ages to encourage the re-imagining of classic fables. Your support will pay the illustrator, copy-editor, designer, and the printing of the books. With your support, copies of the book will also be distributed to students and teachers who want to become better writers.
The book: includes fables, illustrations, writing exercises, and games
Post launch: the book will be available on Amazon after the launch
UPDATE #1: Due to early interest and support, all supporters who contribute at least $10 will have access to a DRM-free copy of the eBook when it is available!
UPDATE #2: Holy Academia Batman! Now, DRM-free electronic lesson plans will be available to every supporter (at every level) after the book release.
UPDATE #3: 100% Campaign Funding! Thank you and congratulations! The book will now have enough funding for the print run!
STRETCH GOALS! These rewards will be unlocked as the campaign reaches higher goals.
UPDATE #4: Play-testing the games! Tweet @ Jim once you back the project and you could play-test one of the games in the back of the book with us.
$2,000 Goal Reward UNLOCKED: Online Writing Workshops Free resources for writers rock. At this level we will host and post two 1-hour recorded workshops on YouTube. These workshops will be open to writers and supporters for filming and free for everyone once they go live. They will include some games from Write with Lions and the author will host!
$3,500 Goal Reward: Spanish language edition of Write with Lions made PoD. Some of the early supporters have mentioned using WwL for their language learning programs. We would love to launch a Spanish edition of the book after the first edition is printed. This support level will allow us to find translators, bi-lingual copy editors, and marketing for the Spanish edition. If we reach this goal, Spanish or Bi-Lingual copies of the book will be available on Amazon!
Kickstarter uses crowd-funding to launch projects: Authors take their ideas to readers (that's you!) and everyone chips in to help fund the venture. Donations are rewarded with unique rewards (usually connected with whatever is being funded).
KICKSTARTER USES AN ALL-OR-NOTHING MODEL: The team behind the book will only receive money if the project reaches (or exceeds) it's goal of $1,500 within 30 days. The site collects donations through Amazon Payments and no one is charged until the 30-day campaign has ended and our goal is met (or exceeded).
How do I pledge a donation?
- Click on "Be a Backer"
- Enter your Pledge (it can be ANY amount)
- Choose a Rewards Tier (if you'd like)
- Continue to the "Next Step" (checkout with Amazon)
- Sign in to Amazon and confirm. (That's it!)
That was fun! Now, what's in it for you?
BOOKS! TONS OF BOOKS! The rewards are listed to the right. Copies of the book can be pre-ordered and most options include postcards and prints from the illustrations in the book.
For the some rewards, we already have friends at an awesome Writing and Tutoring center who are ready to hand out the books to their eager writers. We also have a few classrooms lined up in the Public School system that want to start writing right away!
The prints are all from the illustrations inside the book. Nicole created 35 fantastic pieces, one for each fable. We will be sending out prints randomly. Here are a few to give you an idea of her style:
Building a book takes a team. Besides writing, books need copy-editing, layout, cover design, printing, packaging, distribution, and marketing. The good-news? We've already done most of the work. The book is written. The illustrations are finished. The layout is complete. We have a printing and distribution company picked out (and we love them!).
With a print date set for early July, we expect the books to be in your hands in August - ideally before the school year starts back up!
Why no traditional publisher?
We didn't approach any of the traditional publishing companies with this book. We are not aware of any other efforts in the same space and thought you, our friends and supporters, would like to support the project directly!
Risks and challenges
Printing: We are relying on a Chicago-based start-up for printing. If there are any issues with the service, we are able to print using Amazon's Createspace. In either case, the more copies we print, the better!
Distribution: The students will be easy to find at the writing center, but we will also be approaching teachers and librarians who work with Chicago Public Schools to ensure additional distribution.
Volume: If volume of orders is unexpectedly high, delivery delays might ensue. We're not anticipating any delays here, but it's always good to be up-front with potential risks!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
