About this project
Verdura is hand crafted in Tuscany, Italy, by master shoemaker Andrea Verdura. The use of recycled and natural materials, combined with Andrea’s design, makes this line truly unique. Verdura products leave no discernible footprint on the environment. They are also extremely comfortable.
The Verdura story
Here’s the inspiring story behind Verdura: The European Union banned narrow gauge fishing net because it captured young fish and endangered many species. Andrea spotted pieces of net on the beach near his hometown of Piombino on the Italian coast.
He picked one up, put his foot into it, out of curiosity, to see how strong it was and immediately recognized the shape of a sandal forming around his foot. He felt that he could make a sandal from this net, but realized he should soften it, to make it comfortable.
We cut the net and wash it several times to soften the fabric. We dye it with natural pigments and then combine it with cork, recycled rubber sole and waste leather left over from shoe production.
The insole is anatomic, made of natural cork. The sole itself is available in two different versions, one composed of recycled Vibram rubber and the other of recycled, vegetable-tanned leather. We use these eco-conscious materials to craft stylish, comfortable footwear for women, men and kids.
Our goal is to create revolutionary footwear that contributes to a cleaner environment. We want our seas, oceans and beaches to be free of waste, toxins, broken glass and, of course, disused fishing net.
A love of our planet is at the heart of Verdura.
We are collaborating with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS), an international, non-profit, marine wildlife, conservation organization, which was established in 1977. Their mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans, in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.
Sea Shepherd exposes and confronts illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.
Sea Shepherd will be providing us with quantities of net that we will recycle for use in Verdura footwear. This will tie in with our goal of retrieving more discarded net from the sea and beaches. Together, Verdura and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society can help create a much cleaner environment.

We offer you a wide range of quality footwear that maintains the highest standards of design and comfort. It has taken years of experience, the right materials and innovative design to create Verdura footwear.
We want our customers to feel what it means to walk “soul to sole.“ It has always been our dream to produce high-quality footwear at reasonable prices.
Recycled future project
Team Verdura has decided to continue its commitment to a cleaner environment. If you send your old Verdura footwear back to us, we will give you a $15 credit towards a new pair of Verduras. Then we are going to use the recycled shoes to create a line of skateboards and surfboards.
Yes, that's right, we are going to dissemble the shoes, when we have enough material, and then turn them into new, recycled products. So, please help us keep recycling and contributing to a cleaner ecosystem.
Verdura, a step in a bright direction…towards a 100% recycled future
What you pay for one pair
When you buy direct from us you will pay a figure that is 30% to 40% below standard retail price.
How to maintain your Verdura sandals and boots
Please avoid leaving your shoes or sandals in a damp place. Be sure to air dry them if they do get wet. You can clean the net upper and the cork sole with soap and water, and be sure to air dry them after this also.
