VERDACOMB is an original graphic novel written and illustrated by Dan Berry. Since August 2009, Dan has been deeply invested in the development of characters and story lines set within the Verdacomb System, a futuristic dystopian society enslaved not only by virtual and augmented distractions, but also institutionalized war.
On the surface, the city of Verdacomb appears to be a science-fiction utopia - curved metallic roads magnetically levitate public transports using free energy, towering servers the size of skyscrapers house the data required to run virtual worlds, and augmented designs fill the average OMNI user's eyes with delightful distractions. It seems like the ideal life... until you learn the truth.
Each year the Four Nations gather for the Harvest Game - an electromagnetic death match held in an ancient stone arena - to decide who wins the surplus of their collective harvest. Volunteers, usually farmers or desperate exiles, fight using organic battle mechs called Orb Suits to capture the white, monolithic pillar in their Nation's corner. Instead of protesting the continuous glorification of death, the citizens of Verdacomb attend festivals outside of the game arena - distracted by music and drugs during their annual vacation from the virtual world at home.
During a pay-per-minute live broadcast, Berdini witnesses first hand how the game is rigged and decides that he has seen enough! With the help of his friends Denuva and Napeen, he sets into motion a plan to expose the corruption and wake up their society to the nefarious schemes at play in their world. Yet before Denuva can join the plan to blow the whistle, he must overcome his addiction to technology in order to pursue the truth behind his own mysterious past.
Will they succeed, or will the people of Verdacomb continue to revel in their virtual slumber?
Dan Berry is a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, where he earned a BFA in 2D Animation. During his time in Georgia he designed the Orb Suit, which lead to the creation of VERDACOMB over years of development and concept drawing. Since December 2012, VERDACOMB pages have released weekly on the official website as a webcomic and sold as single issue comics at comic conventions - including Emerald City ComiCon, Alamo City Comic Con, Rose City Comic Con, and Wondercon. Though without the support of his editor and fiancé Melissa Hoffman, the project would not have been possible! Together they started Fun Guy Studios LLC, which is now the official publisher of VERDACOMB and TOFUZILLA!
Our goal is to raise $20,000 to fund a 2000-print run of our 200-page 8.5x11 Hardcover Volume One - it will feature high quality 80lb paper and a 95lb scuff-resistant cover with spot UV gloss, and will be produced in Canada. Each hardcover book will include the Volume One Soundtrack, a five song playlist inspired by the graphic novel and composed by fi-nite!
75% of our budget will be spent on the books and freight. The final 25% is reserved for producing and shipping additional rewards, including the virtual edition USB wafers, art prints, 3D Orb Suit Prints, VERDACOMB city sweatshirts, and Part One of our companion graphic novel, TOFUZILLA.
We anticipate completing production and shipping rewards in time for the 2016 Holiday season - VERDACOMB Volume One would make a great gift for that special comic lover in your life!
Our long term goal is to create four VERDACOMB books, each consisting of a maximum of 16 chapters. The graphic above illustrates how far along we are in the process of completing the series. This is only the beginning! When each Volume is released, the chapters contained within will no longer be printed as single issues, making them collector's items along the way.
Take a look at the rewards below to see what you can receive by supporting our project!
The Volume One Virtual Edition is a USB Wafer, which contains full PDFs of Chapters 1-4 and the entire Volume One Soundtrack composed by fi-nite!
If you're interested in skipping the shipping fees and the wait, then the Virtual Edition Download is for you!
For the first time you can own TOFUZILLA Part One, in single issue format, as a reward in our campaign. The idea for TOFUZILLA came to be a few months before I designed the first Orb Suit, acting as a companion, time-travel story! Below is a sample of Part One:
"With VERDACOMB, Dan Berry has created a visually playful, cleverly written comic. While it would be easy to simply praise the linework and vibrant color, a closer reading reveals a new, interesting world chock full of surprises. These first few chapters drop you right into it, revealing more of the story in carefully doled out increments. I'm totally hooked."
- Josh Shalek, Falling Rock National Park
"VERDACOMB feels like Disctrict 9 meets Star Wars IV: A New Hope. You get immersed into the world immediately. It's a quick paced adventure that you don't want to miss out on!"
- Edwin Huang, UDON Entertainment
Risks and challenges
We have been successfully self-publishing VERDACOMB for the past three years and so we are no strangers to the world of original content. Chapters 1-4 are fully created and our vendors are lined up - we are only waiting on funding to move forward.
Of course, any project could face the potential of unexpected obstacles, but we are confident in our relationships with all of our vendors and also our timeline. If anything comes up, we will communicate fully with our supporters and will absolutely keep you updated as we move through the process of printing and shipping our rewards.
