The first page of PAPA (scroll down for your regular Kickstarter report).
Hi, guys, I’m Vera Greentea and I’d like to present my newest project to you– a Father’s Day comic book collection of dark fantasy stories. Each of the three hypnotic tales focus on a decision made by a father – regarding, or sometimes ignoring his child – and the consequences on that child, and also the rest of the world… the rest of us.
The stories will be illustrated by three insanely gifted artists that I discovered in some prodigy-ridden pocket universe. They are Ben Jelter (Sidius Nova, The Tumor); Lizzy John (Fraggle Rock) and Joseph Lacroix (Diablo).
What I hope to achieve with this Kickstarter
I hope to debut this collection on (American) Father’s Day, June 16th, 2013. I’d like to raise some funds to offset costs on the full-color, roughly 50-page volume. Personally, I’d like it to be a really pretty thing; perfect bound, standard comic-size, with a color silk-screened cover and extra goodies. The kind of object you can actually give to your own daddy figures (depending on how you feel about them, of course). But mainly, I’d like to pay the artists as well as I can – because they're really putting it all into these gorgeous pages.
So, if you’d like to give this to your dad (or anyone really) on Father’s Day, check out the gift and pre-order incentives on the right to see all the gift options! And if you want to keep the book for yourself… there is stuff there for you too!
PLEDGE REWARD HIGHLIGHTS
For FREE, you get a pretty cool downloadable poster, created by one of the brilliant artists for this book. If you're terribly good, there might be another FREE poster midway through the project. Just come and check out the non-backer related posts!
For $30, you get 2 PDFs, 2 hardcopy books, and a Kickstarter-only special Father's Day card with art from the book and a note by me.
For $50, a hammersmith will create a Kickstarter-only antiqued guitar pick stamped with the word PAPA.
For $90, you get absolutely everything (except the Retailer Pledge) and an incredible collector's print by one of the artists in the book!
Stretch Goal: $16,000
If we can make it to $16,000, I want to do something incredibly special with the cover: I would love to make it silk-screen and turn all the books into a collector's edition for everyone. I also want to make it longer and fill it with more process pages and sketches done for the book by the artists, and as many other pretty things we can afford.
We all worked really hard on these haunting tales, and hope that you make space for them in your hearts. Thanks so much for checking out this project, and hope you enjoy the video!
P.S. If you know me from my family-friendly books Recipes for the Dead or Nenetl of the Forgotten Spirits, please be aware that these new stories are not for children. Although I keep graphic violence and sex to a minimum, this particular content is for more mature minds, so parental guidance is appreciated. Thank you!
P.P.S. The music in this video is by the creative cellist Zoe Keating (FMA).
Risks and challenges
After successfully creating four single issue comics, I am ready to delve into a world of (slightly) bigger books with more complicated stories and formats. I've never created a book quite like this before, but I hope that almost 2 years of experience of self-publishing beautiful books, the challenges will not pose too much of a threat. I've already taken steps to make sure I have a brilliant production team of artists and a printing company that understands quality - and like always, I will take challenges as they come while continuously vocalizing to my backers so they know exactly what's going on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
