STRETCH GOAL: £15,000 ($19,000)
Quite incredibly, we’ve surpassed our goal! Thank you so much to each and every one of you who pledged any amount, we couldn’t have come this far without you!
Our target is the minimum amount needed to bring this film to life, but an increased budget can go far, especially for a film with a futuristic setting! Every penny raised will go into making the production the best it can possibly be, and even with our already ambitious vision, we want Venus to compete with the best the UK & Hollywood have to offer.
Our Stretch Goal will go towards making our visual effects look even more impressive on screen, including an amazing cyberpunk cityscape, and the menacing flying drones which hunt Iris. It would also grant us an extra day of filming, which is extremely valuable during a film shoot!
We’ve also added a new reward: a beautiful hardback art and production book, featuring concept artwork, production/location stills, and some written insights into the entire development.
We're thrilled to have come this far and so excited to start shooting. Thank you for joining us, we can't wait to share this special film with you!
A grieving mother uploads the consciousness of her dead daughter, Iris, into a stolen synthetic body. Torn out of her idyllic digital world and left on the run in an oppressive city, Iris must confront her body's objectification and its violent capabilities, as well as the dark truth of her mother's actions.
Venus is a short live-action science-fiction film inspired by cyberpunk classics like Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell, and more broadly, films such as Ex Machina, Under the Skin, and Cam.
'Cyberpunk' typically blends lowlife and high tech, depicting futuristic urban dystopias in which advancements in technology can raise questions about cybernetically enhanced bodies, the implications of digital worlds, and what it means to be human, all against a backdrop of social upheaval and extreme inequality. You know, pretty small concepts!
With these ideas in mind, it seems like an obvious genre through which to also explore crucial modern-day issues of sexism, sexuality, and objectification. Yet it's rare to see these worlds from the perspective of a female protagonist while also engaging with these issues.
Venus intends to do just that, as well as embracing the action, excitement and compelling visuals of the genre. The story is about the relationship between Iris and her insurgent mother, who goes to desperate lengths to bring her dead daughter back to life; as a result, Iris is thrown into a hostile world in an unfamiliar body designed for sex and violence.
The film is a progressive representation of gender and identity in the most progressive of genres. The intention is to create a thrilling and thought-provoking short film with a real-world importance.
MEET THE TEAM
The team is dedicated to Venus and are able to work on a very tight and fast timeline. With the script finalised, our next steps include beginning the casting process and we have some really exciting ideas in mind.
We’ll be ready to start principal photography in October 2019 and have a total of five days planned for filming, followed by sufficient time for VFX and post-production. We've already secured an amazing alley location for one of the key scenes, which you can see featured in our poster further down the page. Our intention is to premiere Venus at film festivals in early 2020.
Why a 10K target?
Science-fiction isn't the cheapest of genres to bring to life - in fact, cyberpunk is probably the most expensive style to pull off on screen. We really want to do this story and its futuristic settings justice - we plan to blow you away with an authentically futuristic world through which to tell an intimate story.
The creative team has absorbed most of the costs of development, writing, and testing. So what we're looking to secure from our target are the actual hard costs to start and finish filming and complete post production; any funding beyond this goal will allow us to invest in greater production value and an overall more polish in post.
THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN
With your help, we can cover many of the production costs; from set design, makeup, wardrobe, location fees, to feeding the cast and crew, as well as specific post-production services to finish the film. Can we exceed the goal? Totally! 10K is our minimum Kickstarter goal to help create the world of Venus. The film has complex sets as well as practical and visual effects, so the more we can raise, the more spectacular it will be! And remember, Kickstarter is all or nothing; your pledges will only become donations and rewards can only be distributed when and if we reach our target.
Whether you're a science-fiction fan who's keen to see more original sci-fi in cinemas, a supporter of emerging independent filmmakers and our values, or someone who simply wants to help us achieve our dream project - please consider backing Venus and spreading the word.
Our rewards range from a copy of the film and a digital bundle, to printed posters and concept art, all the way to a personally composed EP album and producer credits. Getting involved gives you access to our great rewards which you won’t find anywhere else!
Please note that the each estimated delivery date is for all rewards other than a digital download of the film and the production book, which will be available once it's completed in early 2020. Also please be aware that we cannot cover travel costs for rewards involving being on set! We'll take good care of you though and provide plenty of food.
Venus means so much to us and we can't wait to get started!
Risks and challenges
Every film has its own set of unique challenges. One of our biggest challenges is to raise the finance required to effectively translate the script into a believable world, creating an enriching backdrop in which to immerse the audience. Science-fiction can offer much beyond pure escapism: it can present a glimmer of hope for the future of humanity, and hold up a mirror to our rapidly evolving society.
There’s a built-in visual appeal to most science-fiction worlds, highlighting the importance of world-building. It needs to be fully developed and believable, which often has a direct relation to the budget. Most imaginary renderings of what the future holds are inherently captivating, but also incredibly expensive to produce. Visualising this future inevitably requires custom-built sets, props and complex computer-generated effects. This is why we need to raise the minimum target of 10K to create an engaging and convincing world that will transport the audience. We have highly experienced crew members who have successfully completed similarly ambitious projects, and we are confident we can tackle this thrilling endeavour.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
